“Relax, Miss Cosgrove. You’re here because you earned the opportunity. Have a seat.” She gestured to the open chair on the guest side of the desk. She sat down in her own chair. “So I’ve got the written version of your history here. What do you think this doesn’t tell me that makes you qualified for the job?”

The coffee carved a warm path down her throat and for a moment it allowed her to take a breath and relax. “Well, I have a pretty good grasp of the administrative world, through experiences being around my father and sister. But I could do administrative work anywhere and I don’t want to. Oed is the place I keep coming to, for different reasons. I understand this world, it’s creativeness, it’s sometimes brutal reality. Hell, I was mugged the first day I ever set foot on this planet and woke up int the hospital.” She shrugged. “Things happen here that might not elsewhere, but it forces you to be resilient and persistent. I respect this colony, but it doesn’t scare me. When I first arrived I was a sheltered and privileged kid. Oed, and my sister’s work here, taught me to stand on my own two feet and put the best of me forward. I want to return the favour.”

She hadn’t rehearsed her answers, and she really meant it. She’d grown up and Kristina liked the person she was far better than that whiny kid who really knew litle about the galaxy around her.

Ana nodded slowly. “The Governor would like you.” Though Hyrushi rarely expressed any emotion, Ana was fairly certain he’d approve of a citizen so passionate. “Your fire when you talk about the colony and the effect it’s had on you, it’s an asset. What’s your understanding of the position you’re in consideration for?”

“Well, I’d be lying if I said I knew the whole of it, but I do know that public affairs is really about the managing of many moving parts. Here in the Tower, there are the internal workings of government and then there is the public perception of them. Decisions made about how and when things are disclosed. The work the Executive and cabinet do, including yourself are all about those high level decisions and legislation. Things that affect the public, whether they are aware of it or not. Now, my role as an intern, I would imagine, is to help with the fine details, the little stuff that still needs to get done. And yes, I expect some of it might be mundane, but those things necessary too. Not everything is high profile and high risk. Sometimes it’s just making sure meeting minutes are disseminated in time.” Kristina shrugged. “Am I even close?” she said, breaking into a small grin.

Ana appraised Kristina, looking her up and down. “In most places you would be correct. OED is not most places and the Hyrushi government is not most governments. In this case, you’ll be directly assisting me and the Communications Director. You’ll be responsible for helping craft the colony’s image to its own citizens and the Federation at large. This is a training position. If you manage it, you may make it fully onto the staff. You will be responsible for many of the things you said, beyond which you’ll be expected to have ideas. And good ones.”
