Kristina was still shocked that she was even considered for such a high profile internship. She sort of thought her association with her half-sister’s planet, even briefly might have made her less of a candidate, but apparently she was still in the mix. She had a 10:00 appointment and arrived at the Tower twenty minutes early, knowing the security checkpoints could be busy a lot of the time. She checked in with Reception and was given a temporary visitor’s pass with clearance to Level 47: the Chief of Staff’s level. She gave the woman a smile and moved through security, clearing quicker than she expected. Ten minutes to spare.Stepping out of the lift, Cosgrove hoped she was dressed professionally enough with her wide legged tan trousers and a loose raspberry blouse with long sleeves and a fitted tank underneath. She wore modest heels in a dark red, and her brown hair hung in soft waves past her shoulders. She looked around and spotted the reception desk that was the gateway to all the other offices for the Communications department. And with any luck, maybe even a space for her too.
Shifting a sleek black bag on her shoulder she approached the desk and waited till the person was obviously available and she had their attention. “Hello, I’m Kristina Cosgrove. I have an appointment with Ms. Caputo.”

Ana’s assistant Arin checked the day’s schedule. “Ah. Here you are.” He reached for an intercom button. =Ma’am, your next appointment is here. A Kristina Cosgrove.= There was a long pause. =Send her back.=
She would find the door to Ana’s office already open, though Ana herself was buried in work. Without looking up, she said “Come in, Miss Cosgrove. Would you like some tea or coffee?”
-Chief of Staff
“Uh, coffee would be great actually, thank you,” she said as she approached the desk. Kristina figured if there was an offer of a hot drink, that there would be time to drink at least some of it, so she might as well make herself at ease here.
Ana went to the replicator and got two cups of coffee. She returned to her desk and set both cups down, sliding one across to Cosgrove.
Cosgrove took a measured breath and forced herself to relax. Was she nervous? A little, yes. But that was okay. That told her that she really wanted this and it meant something to her. “Before we get started I just wanted to thank you for meeting with me. I’m honoured to be even considered for the position.” Yes it was an internship, but a higher profile one, and one a lot of people probably wanted.

“Relax, Miss Cosgrove. You’re here because you earned the opportunity. Have a seat.” She gestured to the open chair on the guest side of the desk. She sat down in her own chair. “So I’ve got the written version of your history here. What do you think this doesn’t tell me that makes you qualified for the job?”
-Chief of Staff
The coffee carved a warm path down her throat and for a moment it allowed her to take a breath and relax. “Well, I have a pretty good grasp of the administrative world, through experiences being around my father and sister. But I could do administrative work anywhere and I don’t want to. Oed is the place I keep coming to, for different reasons. I understand this world, it’s creativeness, it’s sometimes brutal reality. Hell, I was mugged the first day I ever set foot on this planet and woke up int the hospital.” She shrugged. “Things happen here that might not elsewhere, but it forces you to be resilient and persistent. I respect this colony, but it doesn’t scare me. When I first arrived I was a sheltered and privileged kid. Oed, and my sister’s work here, taught me to stand on my own two feet and put the best of me forward. I want to return the favour.”
She hadn’t rehearsed her answers, and she really meant it. She’d grown up and Kristina liked the person she was far better than that whiny kid who really knew litle about the galaxy around her.

Ana nodded slowly. “The Governor would like you.” Though Hyrushi rarely expressed any emotion, Ana was fairly certain he’d approve of a citizen so passionate. “Your fire when you talk about the colony and the effect it’s had on you, it’s an asset. What’s your understanding of the position you’re in consideration for?”
