Tiberius was finishing up his shift and needed some downtime. He was somewhat hungry and wanted to have something to drink. Because it was the ship, there is only one place to go and that was the officer’s mess hall. He walked from his station to make his way there. After a few moments, he arrived at the mess hall and when he entered, he looked around. He did notice that Hannah was sitting alone. He smiled when he saw her but had to hide it. He was going to see about sitting with her to eat but it might not go perfectly but it does not happen, it does not happen. He walked over to the replicated and requested a ribeye, the way he liked it, with loaded baked potato and a glass of water with ice. After a second, his food appeared. He was excited. He walked over to where Hannah was sitting and said, “Hi Lt Asimina, can I sit with you and chat?” He waited to see what her response was. He made sure and smile at her to make her feel comfortable. He did not want to come across as a creep but wanted to show interest. In the past, he might have been nervous but with his experience with security, there was 0 reason to be nervous. He had been through way worse then getting turned down by a woman during his career.

Hannah was sitting at the table with a plate of sushi and a cup of tea that smelled.very strongly of ginger. She was writing on a PaDD. She looked up as he approached. “Cmdr Cattaneo. Oh yes of course,” she said in her strangely accented voice. She waved to the empty seats. “Just give me a moment please.” She returned to the PaDD and quickly finished the letter she was writing and sent it off. She looked back at him with a friendly smile. “What can I do for you?”

Tiberius went ahead and sat down after Hannah indicated he could. He did not want to intrude but he wanted to chat with her. He was hoping nothing on his face, like blushing or anything, gave anything away on why he was really here. Tiberius then responded, “No need for commander in a informal setting. Call me Tiberius as long as we are off duty. I just wanted to chat about our little mission on the Centurion. I noticed you had good ideas and I would love to hear more about your experiences. Also, I noticed you have an unusual accent and I’m curious where you might be from. ” He waited for Hannah to respond. He wanted to ask some open ended questions to allow her to talk about herself. He knew women liked to talk about themselves so he was hoping it would open up the conversation to make her feel relaxed. He waited for her response.

She picked up her tea and sipped slowly at it, letting the ginger work its magic. She nodded to his introduction. “Hannah,” she clarified as she set her cup down. “My first duty assignment was on the USS Fearless. We mostly helped set up colonies’ infrastructure or repair it after disasters. I spent more time in rescue operations and triage medicine than I did in sickbay. I have my level 3 search and rescue corridnator certifications. Where I grew up, we had to be our own rescue teams, so I learned early.” She picked up the small dish of Wasabi and sniffed it and curled her nose setting it to the side. “I grew up on a remote research colony, Catawba, on the edge of the Federation near Breen space.” She picked up chopsticks and used them to pick up some of the sushi and ate it. “My ‘accent’ isn’t from the colony. I’m deaf. I didn’t get my implants until I was 8 and didn’t start speaking until I was 10.”

Tiberius had accomplished what he wanted. He wanted her to talk about herself. It was a good way to get to know her. He then responded with, “It seems like you have a little bit of a dare devil in you with the search and rescue coordinator stuff. I was not expecting to hear you grew up in such a distant location, based on where the colony is. Did you have large amount of interaction with the Breen being that close to their space while you were growing up?” He was hoping this would give her more ways to talk about herself. He was hoping he did not offend Hannah by asking about her accent. Tiberius still though Hannah was extremely good looking and so far, she was easy to talk to so that helped too. She did not seem too full of herself. He also liked the fact she enjoyed sushi. Tiberius took a few bites of his dinner while listening to Hannah talk and after asking her the follow up questions. The food was decent, but fresh was always better. He needed to make some minor changes to the streak through the programming of the replicator to help with the seasoning.

Hannah shook her head quietly as she ate. “No. We didn’t cross the boarder and they didn’t cross ours unless there was a reason, and they always informed us if they were coming close. Or more like a warning to not interfere, but it wasn’t like we could. They had no interest in our world or the work being done.” Hannah was used to explaining to people about her accent and what others perceived as her over exuberance to ‘talk with her hands’. What she was actually doing was signing. Her first language and most comfortable with. People didn’t know sign though, and the UT didn’t work with sign. “My father always said I was a dare devil. What about you? Do you have much experience with search and rescue operations?”

Tiberius knew he needed to answer the question about search and rescue but he did not want to sound annoying since he was in security and search and rescue was part of his normal duties. “As a security officer, search and rescue operations is normal training required, especially for department heads. I have been through a number of search and rescue missions. I do enjoy doing that. I also love jumping out of aircraft using a parachute. I also enjoy hanging out at the beach and off-roading. Being at the gym is also good, both for my health and help with my position in Starfleet. I would have to say I am a dare devil. I also combat train in the holodeck against Klingon warriors as they seem to be best at hand to hand having had dealt with. I see you are eating sushi. I do enjoy sushi myself. What other food at you enjoy?” He was hoping with the additional data provided, he would be able to learn more about Hannah. He did eat a few more bites of his dinner while waiting on Hannah to respond. He was still stunned by her beauty and was impressed with her being a dare devil.

Hannah was aware that he would have had the teaining, but that doesn’t mean he had practical experience. She was glad to hear that he did. “Have you ever worked a medical emergency S&R? I know sometimes the priorities between the two can cause friction. So I will say up front, that I do not take more time than necessary to triage the patient. Just as you have to get us in and out safely, I have to make sure we can do that with the injured as well. Just know if I say I need two minutes, I need it. I’m not being argumentative.”

She glanced at the sushi and grinned. Almost as if she would laugh, but she didn’t. “It is a new dish for me. I was just introduced to it. It’s very good and doesn’t upset my stomach, so I call that a win.”

Tiberius thought for a second and replied, “I have never been through a medical emergency S&R. There is always a balance between security and everything else during any sort of S&R so I would have assumed that with a medical emergency one, having the person’s life was always the most important since part of security is humans. The biggest problem is humans are generally the biggest problem.” He said with a smile. He was trying not to giggle at himself but he always thought it was funny. He was always odd with what he laughed at but he thought he was amusing himself. He then said, “Do you have a hard time finding food that does not upset your stomach? If so, it has to be difficult to try new things. I have a stomach of steel and not much seems to upset it. There are just certain things I do no care for due to a texture issue. But I’m just a little strange like that.” He waited for Hannah to respond.

Hannah nodded as she took another bite. After she washed it down she spoke. “People are always the problem and the solution.” She took a sip of her tea. “No, not usually. I love trying new things. It is one of my favorite things about being in Star Fleet and meeting new people. Getting to try their food. However, the baby isn’t quite as adventurous as I am. Textures can be funny. The flavor can be great, bit if it feels unpleasant it can ruin the whole meal.”
