Eela wanted to laugh, as it was amusing to consider, but she couldn’t manage it. “Agent V’ter, we really should stop hanging out like this,” she quipped before she took the crate in her arms.

“I’ll wait for you to finish the sweep. I need some air,” she said, before promptly moving out of the office and through her kitchen to the back hall that ran along the windows and over looked the patio. She stepped out onto the patio from the dining room doors and inhaled to fill her lungs before she blew it out.

Everything out here was becoming lush, with flowers blooming and vegetables growing. Even the flowing vine over the new pergola was in full bloom, letting out a warm and sweet scent. The space was truly coming into its own since Kenzo had first had dinner here. She sat on one of the lounge chair and began to pull out small bags of what seemed to be herbs.

A few long moments later, a hand gently set on the small of her back was the first indication Kenzo was there. “They are gone. No other issues. Are you alright?” he asked softly.

Kenzo

She drew in a s slightly shaky breath as he touched her before Eela blew it forcibly out. “Oh yeah, sure. Some unknown person is trying to sneak into our business and, sure, it makes sense to try me. Fine, whatever,” she said dismissively as she pulled out another bag that held round dark red leaves each about the size of her thumbnail. She opened it and inhaled slightly and nodded. She couldn’t shake the sense of unease though and she wasn’t sure which specific thing had triggered it.

Kenzo stood next to her, not intruding on her… but close enough she could feel his support. “You are still the unknown factor, Eela. It makes sense, from an espionage perspective, to try it against you. And… that does give us an idea of the kind of mind at work. They obviously want something from us or you. More than likely information. So they are familiar with Oed, and have an interest in it. That narrows down the pool of potential perpetrators considerably.”

Kenzo

She plucked another bag out of the crate and studied it. It was mixed with a dark brown powder and this one she did not open. “I know,” Eela said simply with a sigh. “I’m not ups-” She sighed. “Okay, yes, I’m upset they intruded upon me but that’s not what has shaken me just now.” She looked up at him and gestured to the other lunger next to her.

“I’m not looking to ease the feeling, but in actual fact I’m sitting with it- even though it is uncomfortable- because if I don’t I will always be running form it all.” Eela turned her gaze on her dear friend. “It’s not Hasid specifically, but security rushing into my place. It just… put me back in that moment long enough that I froze. I could feel all those feelings in my body.” Her expression because less neutral, softening into something amounting to a smile. “Sometimes having a Masters degree in pysc at least gives me the knowledge about what’s going on. Even if it doesn’t make me feel better.”

~Eela

Kenzo nodded in understanding. “You are still within the conflict that was here so recently. And the responsiveness of the security team is a reminder of that day.” He looked at the furniture and indicated she should sit, and he sat next to her. “Do not concern yourself with freezing. Concern yourself with addressing the reason you froze. But I can assure you, Eela… no harm will come to you while I am with you. Although I am fairly certain that your skills at hand-to-hand combat are most likely superior.”

Kenzo

She gave him a rueful grin. “You know, if Cory hadn’t removed his hand, I can assure you it would not have gone well for him. But therein would have been the problem. It was still him forcing my reaction, forcing my hand to do something he knew I abhorred. Haliians- philosophically, spiritually- can’t abide violence, though we understand that sometimes it is necessary.”

Eela gazed down at the small little bags that were, in there their way, treasures of great import. When she gazed up at him, she inhaled deeply. “That moment isn’t exactly about feeling unsafe, Kenzo. It was this weird mirroring of the night I left Cory.” She hadn’t told anyone so far about it besides Roger. “It was the same sort of argument where he was making demands, and I was no longer willing to cave to keep the peace. That night he said cruel things he knew would cut deeply and I left before he could stop me. Last week he decided he was not going to let me walk away unless he was okay with it and thus things escalated. When I froze in my office just now, I just couldn’t breathe. That’s why I came out here. I needed a change in scenery.” She gestured to the abundant life growing around them. “This is a safe place. So too is the space inside, but it’s going to take time before there isn’t a small bit of conflicting feelings.”

~Eela

“Do you want to leave? Go somewhere else for a while?” Kenzo asked. “Or perhaps we should ficus on something else. I was planning on going to tour the museum unannounced. See how the preparations are and if the space is ready. You could join me.”

Kenzo

The stubborn part of her wanted to say no and stay here in spite of everything, and probably because she resented being driven out of her home for any reason. But the rest of her knew that this was a choice she could make to help herself, and thus Eela nodded. Blowing out a breath, she gave him a small smile. “I can show you what we’ve come up with for a holding room. A place where we can gather off to the side before the Vren arrive on site and also if any of us needs to step out to have a private word or anything. It’ll be secure and limited in access.”

Eela carefully placed the bags of herbs and powders back into the box and she locked the lid and tapped the top with her hands. “Besides. Now that this has arrived, I have a request. Or rather, an acceptance of an offer? But we can discuss it while we’re out.”
