Karilan began to climb back up, talking as he did so. “I was on a far outer colonial world. Little place, nothing much there. Called Vedert II. There was a old Terran monetary there. Had an immense library. I was there to collect some tomes and such.” He started stripping paint, but then continued. “Anyway, apparently the monks there had provided safe haven to a few Maquis during and after the war. This-” and he banged the stripper on the ship, “- was just outside their grounds. The crew had managed to get there just before they ran out of fuel, and did a controlled reentry and psuedo-crashed right there. You almost couldn’t see it, it was so overgrown.” Karialn laughed and said “I bought it and had it brought to Oed. It sat on the orbital platform for a long time before I could get it here. Pretty sure if Star Fleet hadn’t been kicked out of customs enforcement it would still be there. The CCDA didn’t have the same ‘historical’ issues that Star Fleet did.”

Karilan

“Yeah, that make sense,” Raf said. “It was a long time ago though. But I guess I should know well enough that some things stick with ya.”

He continued to work on the side of the hull, and more than just paying close attention to his work, Torres seemed to enjoy the delicate if repetitive work. “But why buy it? Just to have a project?” It seemed a lot of work for something that was entirely random.

Karilan leaned over the side and looked down at Torres. “Because it deserved better than to sit there and rot away. This is history. And though some people may not like the reminder… history needs to be remembered.” and then they grinned. “And besides… do you know how fast these things can go?!” and they laughed and disappeared from sight.

Karilan

“I don’t, actually. But I’m looking forward to finding out,” Torres said before continuing to remove the paint. Focused on his task, he didn’t notice time passing, and he certainly didn’t allow himself to think on anything else just now. There would be time for that later.

After awhile longer, he found he was getting a cramp in his shoulder and wrist and turned off the sonic stripper. Using the technique that Karilan had shown him, he was proud of the clean work he was doing and once again ran his hand over.

Karilan appeared from behind the aft section of the derelict craft and said “I don’t know about you, but I’m starving.” and they looked at the section of hull Torres had worked on. “Not bad… not bad at all. A few minutes blemishes, but we can hit those next time.” Heooked at Torres and said “How about you let me buy you dinner? Consider it a ‘thank you’ for the help today.”

Karilan

Raf was momentarily taken aback, though he tried to hide his uncertainty. Karilan had done more than he even expected and it was a strange feeling as it was. But more than that? Not only was he not expecting it, he didn’t understand it. Then again, nothing about today entirely made sense. If there was anything he had learned, it was that somedays you just had to go with whatever was happening and see where you landed. “Okay. Dinner would be good,” he said.

“Great! I’ll drop you off at your place, you get cleaned up, and I’ll come back and pick you up. What kind of food do you like?” Karilan said as he put tolls away, cleaned up, and organized the work space for their next session.

Raf stepped out of his coveralls and set the aside to be cleaned before he put away his stripped as well. “Umm, I don’t know. I’m game for anything, really.” And that was the truth, even if it was more complicated than that. Food was food, except… it wasn’t. He eyed Karilan. “I do prefer simpler stuff though. You know, the home cooked kind of thing. Even if it’s not the stuff I grew up with, there’s a bit of nostalgia with it.”
