Hannah didn’t like it, not one little bit. She was used to being the one left behind, she did not like being the one leaving. She spent every third week on the Centurion and she knew and had told Jason they were going out for a small shake down sometime soon. It was her job. She didn’t like it.

The first couple of days of her week on the Centurion were busy and work as usual. She sent Jason a brief message, but didn’t have time for more. By the end of her shifts she went straight to bed. It wasn’t until after her shift on the third day, Hannah realized how much she missed Jason. That scared her how quickly her feelings at grown. Then she reminded herself it really wasn’t all that quickly, it was just surprising to find him again so suddenly. Hannah told herself this was good, to have this little break. Everything had happened so quickly and so intensly, a chance to breathe was good. She sent him a message every day. Once simply to complain that replicated sushi did not help her nausea.

Then her week was up and she went back to the penthouse. Middle of the night, the comms went off and she had to report back. The Centurion was going out for 3 days. Hannah had to leave to make sure the Fleet infirmary was in order and then go back to the ship. Hannah hated it.

But while they waited to disembark, Hannah had something she would like to go ahead and get done. So after getting settled she went to see Dr. Fayth

Sharah had known this cruise was coming and when the comm came through she wasn’t surprised. She had a bag already packed. Poor Yavia was nervous. Sharah had asked her to take care of Hope for her. It wasn’t much, just 3 days, but Sharah was extremely attached to the bonsai tree and Yavia did not have a green thumb. Sharah wasn’t worried. It was very strange though not to have Hope with her. Sharah knew with serving on the colony that the circumstances would not always allow her to stop and grab the plant. But it still felt very strange to know the tiny tree wasn’t there. While they were in orbit though Yavia and Charles presence still felt very close. Though it was different feeling Charles closer in the orbital platform and Yavia further still on the planet.

Sharah had just finished checking the supplies and crew when Hannah appeared at her office door. “Hannah, how are you? I know you just returned to the surface. How is your stomach?”

Fayth, CMO

Hannah grimaced. “Queasy. I admit I didn’t eat much last night. I know the g-force is the same amount, but it’s just different going from real to artificial. I’m trying to keep up my water intake, but all the fluid on my stomach isn’t helpful.”

Sharah nodded, “Do you need something stronger for the nausea? We can do that. Or an electrolyte infusion. Just something to help you get past the initial discomfort so you can eat and drink?” Sharah saw no reason to deny Hannah the opportunity to be there, but if she was sick all the time, she would spend the whole time in her quarters. Hannah felt apprehensive and nervous to Sharah. She waited to see if she would say anything else.

“Actually, I was wondering if you had time to do something for me? Since we have a couple hours before we leave.”

Asimina, AMO

“Of course, what do you need?” Sharah’s answer was immediate and warm. “The whole crew isn’t even aboard yet, so we have some time.”

Fayth, CMO

“I wanted to have a genetic study done for the baby. I have a friend, she’s the top geneticist in Star Fleet, Alexis Kane, she offered to do it. She said if I could get someone to draw the sample and then send her the profile she would do the analysis.” Hannah was nervous about what Alexis might find, but it was better to go ahead and have it done. Like Jason said, there could be things that they should be aware of incase others got curious.

Sharah felt the trepidation and caught the unease in Hannah’s thoughts about the baby…it’s father and Hannah’s need to keep things private…more than private. Another secret Sharah would keep. “Alexis Kane? I’ve never heard of her. I’ve heard of an Alexis Bonner.” Sharah felt Hannah’s recognition at the name and her humor over Sharah’s confusion. They were the same person. Sharah didn’t comment on it though. “I’ve studied her work on and off for a few years. It doesn’t take long to take a sample. If you want to go change, I can set a biobed up. We can go ahead and take care of that. You’ll have to stay laying down for a little, but you should be fine to get up before we disembark.” Sharah stood from her desk and moved into the main bay and toward the cabinet to get the equipment she would need.

Fayth, CMO

Hannah smiled, “Oh, same person. Alexis recently got married. I’m surprised she actually took his name though. I wasn’t sure she would even think about it.” If the comment seemed cryptic or odd, Hannah didn’t bother to explain. She moved out of the office and found a patient gown. She met Sharah at the central bio bed and hopped up. She laid back as Sharah slid the surgical frame over her. “I don’t do well on my back for long periods.” Hannah breathed slowly, she wished Jason was there. Medical procedures were mostly benign now, but there was always risk when performing procedures on unborn fetuses. He had a right to be there, and she felt a little guilty about not waiting for him. But there was time right now, and the sooner she had it done, the sooner Alexis could finish her analysis.

Sharah picked up a hypo from beside the biobed, “I’ve got something right here for your stomach.” She pressed the hypo to Hannah’s neck and there was a soft pop-hiss of the medicine being injected. “I added electrolytes to it as well. By the time you can get up, you should feel much better.” Sharah could tell Hannah was nervous and by the way her mind shied away from the topic, she didn’t want to think too much about the baby. Sharah took a slow breath and let out a gentle hint of peace. Then she attempted distraction. “So what do you think, Hannah? Of Oed and Sacred Heart, and the medical facility so far?”

Hannah took a deep breath as Fayth administered the medications. “It’s amazing. I did a year at Star Fleet Medical right out of the Academy. It was amazing and I learned a lot. I always missed the versatility of such a large complex. They just aren’t viable on a ship though. I got tastes of it as we went around to the different colonies and such. But I’ve never seen anything like Sacred Heart. Everything I read said Sacred Heart was struggling and was short on everything from supplies to skills to equipment and people. It’s true but also very misleading.” Hannah continued to talk while Fayth worked.

While Hannah talked, Sharah began to work. This particular procedure didn’t need the surgical frame, but Sharah preferred to use it because it was a delicate procedure and the imaging on the frame was much better than just a tricorder and the naked eye. Sharah pinpointed the location of the sample she wanted and then used the small medical nanites to extract the sample. Sharah collected the sample and secured the nanites in their special container. She monitored the baby for half an hour to make sure there was no ill effect.

“Well that’s all done. I’ve sent the sample to the lab on board so you should have your profile in a couple of hours. Do you want to send it to your friend, or would you prefer for me to send it more officially?” Sharah inclined the head of the bed slightly and handed Hannah a glass of juice. “The baby doesn’t even seem to have noticed, but we’ll keep an eye out for another hour just to make sure. How do you feel?”

Fayth, CMO

Hannah wouldn’t mind so much, but was it safe to send it so openly? Jason had fixed everything hadn’t he, so it would be fine. “That would be wonderful if you could send it. It has to be sent to my file at Sacred Heart anyway. And then if Alexis has questions about the sample she’ll be able to contact you?” Hannah closed her eyes and yawned. “I feel fine, no pain or uncomfortableness, no cramps or anything. Just really tired.” Apparently that was okay. Sharah left her to sleep for a bit until it was time for the department meeting.
