“Good morning Eela. I am usually here most weeks. Unless I am working. I was supposed to meet Jal’na, but she has been delayed.” Sharah glanced around, “The market gives a sense of identity and mutual purpose for the people. It’s very beautiful.” Sharah turned so she was moving in the direction Eela had been going. “I am excited for the Gala. I think it will go very well. It is hard to forget, forgive, and ket go of the past and our assumptions. But we are not in the past and these are not the same individuals. We cannot judge all similar people by the actions of those that are similar to them. At least, I cannot make them pay for others’ sins.” Oh how well Sharah understood that position.

Sharah

“Indeed,” she said softly. “And I’ve had the good fortune to talk to their Ambassador. I have to admit he makes me smile. Such enthusiasm! I look forward to meeting him in person.” Eela paused at a stall looking over some of the produce. The eggplant looked particularly nice and would make a lovely stew. “Are you looking for anything in particular today?”

Sharah smiled slightly, “You’re impression of him is amusing. I am excited to meet them. Finally a benefit to being a department head.” Sharah looked around, “No not really. I just enjoy seeing what is on offer. Yavia and Charles do the grocery shopping. I don’t cook, but they both really enjoy it. What about you?”

Sharah

“I’m always looking out for interesting things to try out. I don’t get to cook much myself but I’m keeping up my usual once a week dinner, even if it just ends up being for myself. I don’t mind having leftovers.”

“Sometimes I look for teas and herbs. The live plants are usually where I patronize most. I read that there is a new group of colonists arriving. They are planning to open a meadery. I am hoping that perhaps, with that and the terraforming, we might get some fresh honey to be available.” The introduction of just not microorganisms but insects would make a huge difference. Sharah had done some of that on the Ark Angel. Introducing insects into the arboretum had improved the plant life and in the end the air supply. And local to Oed honey would help as people started to develop environmental allergies.

For a moment Eela studied her friend. Their conversation was simple, surface and there was nothing wrong with that. But there was a part of her that needed to know more clearly where they stood. She paid for a couple eggplants and moved forward a little. “How are you?”

Sharah sighed, and sipped at the cup of hot chocolate she had been carrying. That wasn’t what Eela wanted to ask, but was trying to find a way to work up to it. “We stand just fine Eela. Nothing has changed as far as that goes.” Then Sharah shrugged, “I am as I always have been. The only difference is that you have gotten a glimpse of what that means.”

Sharah

Even though no one was in danger of overhearing them, it felt suddenly too public a spot for this conversation. “Can we sit for a moment and chat?” she asked, gesturing to one of many benches that were all over the square.

~Eela

“If you wish,” Sharah moved toward a bench a bit further from the crowd than the others. Even from there she would still feel Jal’na’s presence when she arrived. Sharah took a seat, half turned to face her. “What else is on your mind Eela?”

Sharah

Sitting so she too was half turned, Eela drew in a deep breath. What else, as if the few words spoken had covered it. “You say we’re okay, but it doesn’t feel okay. Not yet, anyway. And maybe for you it’s all over and done with, but if I’ve learned anything since everything went down last weekend, it’s that I need to consciously verify what is true and what is not, or else I’ll just torture myself with uncertainty.” She paused for a moment before she continued. “I guess I need to know from your perspective how you see what happened between us. Not just Tuesday morning, but the whole forty-eight hours I was there. Because I might have been mired in chaos, and probably even selfishly so, but I wasn’t clueless.”
