Cort nodded. “I work late hours, but I find mornings pretty reliable. I’ll see what the next week looks like”-he gave a small snort knowing it was likely to be ridiculous-“and see where I can sneak an hour.”
He gestured to the water. “Talk to you in a few? I don’t want to keep you from your own exercise and I should suck it up and do another 8 laps,” Cort said with a light laugh.

“I can meet early in the morning no problem.” She was usually up anyway, even if she didn’t feel like getting out of bed. That was better these days though. Some days it helped to go ahead and get up and be active, other days taking it slow was better. It would all work out. Hannah nodded and pushed off the wall and began making her way back towards the other end of the pool.

With a smile, Cort let her carry on and pushed himself to his feet. He rolled his shoulders and swung his arms a few times and then took a starting position. His eyes flicked to the wall clock and he waited till it hit a new minute and dove in. He wasn’t as fatigued as he thought he’d be during the first two turns and it allowed him to find his stride. But in the fifth length, the fatigue started to hit and he could feel it in his shoulders. His body felt heavier and harder to move, so he slowed his pace ever so slightly to hopefully at least finish all eight lengths.
As Cort made his last turn into the final length had pushed hard and sprinted the last fifty meters, hitting the deck with his hand and immediately turning to check the time. 6:40. Okay, could have been worse. He had lost time due to the fatigue but made it up at the end.

Hannah’s pace was much lazier, but then she wasn’t timing it. Somewhere along her current lap the back and forth motion of the water got to her, or maybe it was just the exertion and she suddenly felt sick and her stomach cramped. She rolled herself onto her back and just floated for a moment. Then slowly kicked her feet, propelling herself toward the ledge.
She bumped the deck gently and turned letting her hand grab the ledge. She started to lift herself out and decided that was a bad idea. She lowered herself back to the water, ducked under the lane robe and made her way to the ladder. She climbed out and made her way to the bench where she sat still for a minute, taking deep breaths. She glanced at the clock and sighed. Yep, that was the problem. She reached into her bag and grabbed a hypospray and pressed it to her neck. Then she dried her face and around her ears. She reached into her bag again and fiddled with her hair and around her ears.
Spotting Cort she waved. “How’d you do?”
