Hinky stared the woman down with his widened birds’ eyes, made to look as flat as two Bolian nickels. He didn’t want to play all his cards at once.
He shuffled closer to the woman, using his prehensile feet to grab across the plank of the bench.
“Pretty bird,” he croaked–like a cartoon parrot would croak. “Hungry bird,” he whimpered.
Then he fluffed his wings and scooted a little further away–the ol’ flirt and rebuff.
-Hinky, teasingly
Eela grinned. “Yes, you are a pretty bird, but sadly I don’t have anything for you you’re going to want to eat.” Being an empath meant being aware of the life force of living creatures and she could definitely detect the bird’s. But there was something curiously more there that she couldn’t quite explain. She sipped on her coffee, watching to see if the bird would stay or go.

This is going nowhere Hinky thought.
He scratched himself and thought of how else he might be able to get this woman’s attention without showing her everything yet.
He hopped off the bench and landed with a soft thump in front of her feet.
“Hungry bird,” he crooned pitifully. “Want to eat,” he said in Eela’s voice.
-Hinky, playfully
She arched her brows and gazed at the bird. Mimicry was a known thing amongst many bird species but matching a voice? That was just odd. It was even more odd that her mind immediately leapt into one of concern. Good thing her security systems were not voice activated! But it spoke to a strange paranoia that had now become the norm for her.
Eela leaned foward she shooed the bird away with her hand. “I have nothing for you. Go on now,” she said sternly.

This was decidedly not the response that Hinky was going for. Normally when met with a talking bird, especially one that could mimic their voice, most of the bipedal beings reacted with delight and Hinky loved playing dumb as they tried to wheedle him into repeating certain things. Ideally with fruit.
But not this woman.
He fluttered up to one of the tree limbs above the bench and peered down below to where she sat and her security guards stood just a little ways away. He hopped to a limb above the security detail and cleared his throat.
“Go on now,” Hinky said in Eela’s voice. “Go!”
Then fluttered back into the tree.
-Hinky, spitefully
There were times she actually did wish someone on her detail was telepathic so she could communicate more in depth, but they did have their signs and signals. In this case, Eela’s paranoid brain was wondering if someone was behind the bird and using it to get something from her. Crazy, right? Discomfited, she turned to Chuck Mangioni and arched a brow, as if to say, ‘That was odd, right?’. So much for a quiet respite, Sipping her coffee, she rose to her feet and gazed up into the tree for a moment before heading off.
