“Even in the short time I’ve known you I can see you growing, Sharah. This place presents challenges that are definitely unique and sometimes it can be hard to see in the moment just how much they benefit us, but I like to think whatever adversity we’re experiencing is exactly what we needed at this time in our lives, so”-she lifted her glass-“to rising to the challenges that Oed hands us.”

Sharah raised her glass, “To challenges.” Sharah enjoyed being challenged, but not frustrated with them. That’s where she felt right now with the biggest challenge in her life. She was just going to have to deal with that though. She wasn’t sure she had grown a whole lot, but she would admit that she was learning a lot about leadership and people and how to coordinate services. On a personal level…maybe she had, it was hard to examine it. Wouldn’t Korczak love that? It made her grin a little as she sipped at her drink.

Taking a sip, she let the strange combination of flavours of her drink mingle in her mouth before swallowing. “So you said you had something to talk to me about?”

“So…apparently Sacred Heart runs a charity event every year. This year they are trying to raise funds, equipment, services to help with all the refugees arriving to the colony. Well…as the acting Chief of Staff, I’m expected to participate. I didn’t really have a problem with that…until the head nurse, one Ms Alice Shrine, came to ensure my participation and informed me it’s a…” Sharah shook her head. How did she get into these situations. “It’s a bachelorette auction. And as a member of the Sacred Heart staff, despite being very awkward, I don’t mind participating, but as the SFCMO....and I just couldn’t bring myself to ask McBride about this.”

Eela stared at Sharah for a moment and then burst out in her lilting laugh. “An auction? Oh wow!” She forced herself to don a serious expression. “But all for a good cause, of course.”

“Though seriously, you don’t need McBride’s permission. It’s a charity event. What sort of problem do you foresee by participating?” Dasca asked, digging into her lunch.

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Sharah smiled, but didn’t quite feel it. “None I hope. There is a lot of chance at factor here on who wins what bid, but I would hope those participating, on both sides, are doing it to help, and not nefarious purposes.” Sharah paused to take a bite of the sandwich…what was her concern…other than personal reasons of course. “I know I don’t need McBride’s permission, this would all be off duty, but…I guess I don’t want to be accused of conduct unbecoming for auctioning myself and dinner to the highest bidder.”

Fayth, SFCMO

Eela smiled warmly. “Sharah, you are the last person I’d worry about being charged with that. Trust me, I’m currently looking at some that are, so know I’ve got your back. Besides, this is all in good fun, right? And the hospital needs Starfleet’s support too. I don’t think you have anything to worry about,” she said, lifting her glass to her lips.

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Sharah harrumphed, looking disappointed. A part of her really wanted an out for this. “I was afraid you were going to say that. But yes the hospital does need the support.” Sharah shook her head with a grin. “Oh it will be tons of fun, I’m sure. You met several of the medical staff the other night. They are all participating. It will be....outrageous to say the least. Yavia and Jal’na have a bet going on who will get the highest bidder.”

Fayth, SFCMO

Eela grinned. “Oh that I have no doubt. But look at this way. Something like this doesn’t have to have a romantic connotation. It can simply be a friendly lunch and if you don’t get along, oh well, right?” It had been awhile since she had dated at all but that had been self imposed after her accident. It had been too much to figure out the relationships she already had, let alone try to bring anyone into the aftermath of her injuries and retirement. She had thought at the time that it was a kindness to both her and Cory, but it felt like yet one more thing she had compromised even if it had been fulfilling their agreement made years ago. It had been the longest time they had lived together in years and by then she had felt like she was suffocating. Hence why she had spent more and more time away with the Diplomatic Corps. Maybe she had run away after all.

Sharah laughed slightly, “Oh I’m not worried about any romantic connotations. That is not my goal at all.” Though maybe she was worried about how others might approach the auction. She was about to make some flippant remark about people getting their money back if it didn’t work out when she was hit with a tidal wave of emotion from the woman across from her.

The sudden realization sparked a flood of emotion and Eela sat back alarmed. “I’m sorry,” she said holding up a hand, as if she could protective the sensitive telepath form the onslaught. She steadied her breath, letting everything tamp back down to be dealt with later now that she knew it was there.

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Sharah let it wash over her, some of it more clear than other parts, some snippets of thought coming with it, but those were like flotsam in the wave. Some of it tugged and connected to her own emotions from recent struggles, but it wasn’t hers and she allowed it to slip past her. She reached out and took Eela’s hand, lowering it flat to the table and placed her own hand over Eela’s. “Don’t apologize for how you feel.” Sharah breathed in and as she exhaled calm and acceptance flowed out of her. Oh she was quite aware of the irony of telling Eela to not apologize and her own tendency to do so. Sometimes it was easier to be kind to others than it was to yourself.

When Eela seemed to have steadied herself her hand slipped back. She shared a look with her that clearly conveyed the offer to stay or leave as she might feel she needed.
