“Of course.” She nodded, not sure why Lai felt the need to point out how confusing it was for her and her friend. Of course it had to be confusing, she thought. Switching universes was akin to being sent to the delta quadrant. This was a foreign place where their positions were uncertain, and their futures placed in the hands of strangers they could not possibly trust.

Kristina smiled softly. “We’ll try not to forget,” she said before looking at Rousseau. “I’ll walk you out,” she said to the Justice.

Again Astrid nodded. With a soft and hopefully reassuring smile to the couple, she departed respectfully to leave them in peace.

It wasn’t that Astrid needed her to go along, but Kristina wanted a word in private. Quietly in the corridor, she spoke softly. “Assuming we can grant them some sort of protected status, what would that mean? They have nothing here? And she can’t stay in the hospital forever.”

Astrid understood Kristina wished to speak with her privately and was open to the idea. Once they left the room and had a moment of privacy in the corridor, she turned to listen. Kristina brought up a whole other dilemma that had Astrid’s mind working. “Well, depending on the status, they might receive some kind of stipend to help them get settled. Obviously, their needs are urgent. It seems that Lai is probably only going to be here for another day or two. Do we have any idea that they might have been followed by others from their Universe?”

Kristina shook her head. “No, none so far. Captain Conrad said they showed up on a way station and there was no indication of anyone else after them. Whatever brought them here seems to have been a singular event, likely accidental.”

She sighed. “I wish we could be more certain, for their sakes, but the best we can do is be alert, yes?”

Akem had refrained from interjecting, allowing Lai some ‘room to breathe’ as it were. When Kristina and Judge Rousseau left the room, Akem turned to face her. “You know, the quicker you heal, the quicker you…and I…can get out of this place. It seems we have some promise here?” he said, the corner of his mouth playing at a slight grin. She would sense his caution, but a part of him somehow felt a bit more relaxed for the moment.

Turning her head to gaze at the man she had apparently crossed universes with, Lai smiled, tiredness etched into her features, and yet there was a tiny spark in her eyes. “If we can let ourselves feel even a bit safe here, then I think everything is possible.” She reached a hand out to him. “Either way, I’m glad we’re still in this together.”
