“Easy now,” she said, resting a hand on Akem’s shoulder to keep him from getting up. “It seems your memory is intact, which is good, and while we’re not detecting any injuries, being in cryo can leave you dizzy for a little bit, so we need you to rest.”

Though she was on a different floor, Akem would be able to tell that Lai was still alive, even if their connection felt rather tenuous at the moment.

Akem sighed as he stayed put for the moment. He reached out for Lai as he sensed her still alive. They had a unique connection and he had hoped that if he could just reach out to her mentally, maybe it could help stabilize her.

The beautiful connection was still there and through it he would know Lai was holding on. That energy intensified, at least at first, but then it faded. She was still alive but unreachable now. Beyond his touch.

She was there, holding on. That was all he needed.

“Do you have any pain or symptoms we should know about?” Dr. Rakis asked.

“I have no idea,” he muttered, his thoughts still on Lai. After a couple seconds he re-answered the question. “Um, no. No pain really. Just some stiffness.” He then looked to the nurse. “I was brought in with a woman. How is she?” he inquired.

“Halai’s been taken to surgery to deal with her injuries. I can get an update for you shortly. But they were able to get the blood proteins she needed. Can I get your name?”
