Oddvar raised his brows an amused smirk on his face, “Aye, we know it, and that’s why we have our maidens to curb our impulses, or encourage them when need be.” He flattened her fingers and palm against his chest, placing one hand over hers and laughed deeply at her colorful description of Argyle. And then he leaned down, his face beside hers, the deep bass of his voice rumbling out quietly. “Aye I got it, Tara McKenzie. I’ll protect our family and our clan, and any other charge you might give me. And I’ll even be sure to check with you before wracking up any debt you might have to help me pay.”He glanced up hearing the distant sound of foot steps, a hard readiness to him, but seeing his brother and sister-in-law returning he relaxed and dropped his hand and stepped away. “Now either help with straw or take the food inside, woman. We haven’t got all day.” And he winked at her.
Oddvar
Tara’s jaw set and she said simply. “Oh. I’ll be happy to take the food… man.” and she lifted the tray so he could grab a bale of straw. She moved to the side and waited for him to bend over to grab the bale…
And planted the sole of her foot squarely in his back side and shoved, sending him face-first into straw and folded quilts. “Call me woman like that again, Oddvar Cuyler, and it’ll be more than a bruised backside you’ll be nursing. Got it?” and she turned with the tray and looked at the other Edmans as they arrived and grinned. Giving a mock curtsy, she said “Lord and Lady Edman.” and then turned and went into the house with the tray.
Tara
Oddvar fell spectacularly face first into the hay and came up coughing and spiting all for Tara’s benefit, but behind the antics his eyes were twinkling with laughter. He rolled onto his back and sat up meeting her gaze. “Oh I got it, Tara McKenzie, and I’ll hold you to it.” Pushing himself off the hay he picked up two of the bales and began hauling them back around the small lean-to behind the house, a huge grin on his face. “Cuyler, Helka” he said on the breath of a chuckle as he passed them.
Cuyler looked from the disappearing Tara to his brother and back to his wife. “I’m too old for this!” Helka laughed and patted his arm, “No you aren’t, but you have me so you don’t have to do all this.” Cuyler rolled his eyes. “I swear Runa better not come home with a man in her life. I can only keep up with so many love stories at once,” Cuyler laughed, wrapped his arms around Helka lifting her up so he could kiss her. “But ours is my favorite, wife.” Helka sighed, she loved that man. “Go help Oddvar, before you get ideas. Devlin will be here soon.”
Cuyler grabbed to bales and carried them around the back of the house where he found his brother laughing quietly, but so hard his eyes were watering. “Oddvar what are you up to?” Oddvar calmed down after a minute. “Got that lady so twisted around she called me Oddvar Cuyler!! I am sure that’s the first time in years that Tara has made a mistake like that, and I’m taking the credit.” Cuyler looked at him, “Tara?” Oddvar chuckled, “Yep told me to call her Tara.” And Oddvar walked away to go get more bales, whistling the whole way.
Helka took the canister of icy cold water inside, she poured it over a compress and handed it to Seamus to put on Ragna’s ankle and then she walked back outside to give them privacy. She found two chairs and set them side by side and collapsed into one.
The EdmansThere was a low whine and the wind whipped up. Helka looked up from she was sitting, not another storm, gods give her daughter a break, but as soon as she looked up she knew her mistake. It was the shuttle. Cuyler and Oddvar appeared from around the house and Cuyler picking up the large double headed axe waved it, catching the light and then jogging back towards the coast, where Devlin would have plenty of room to land and it would stir up the garden or bother the sheep. The shuttle landed smoothly, ruffling the heather, but kicking up the breeze. Devlin was an accomplished pilot and landed the small four person shuttle into a small dip between the hills where it wouldn’t be so noticeable. The shuttle powered down about the time Cuyler and Oddvar reached it and the rear hatch. Devlin was not as tall as the others but he was fit and still carried himself like a Star Fleet officer. His wife Kirsten and her sister Ada was with him. They all carried a pack and Devlin handed another to Oddvar and they turned and made their way back towards the house. “Helka! They’re here. Do you want to go with me to call Revna?” Helka nodded, got up and walked over to Cuyler and they made their way back to the shuttle, leaving Oddvar to make the introductions.
Clan EdmanAt the sound of the shuttle, Seamus looked at the door and the to Tara. “Watch her!” he said and strode to the door. Yes, it was probably the Edmans… but it could also not be them. With practiced ease his arm reached up and took down the claymore from above the door and out the door he went without so much as a pause in his step.
Ragna had been asleep, until Seamus practically shouted at Tara. Her eyes opened just in time to watch Seamus grab his claymore and walk out the door. She tried, she really tried to get up, but she was only going to do more damage and she was of no use to him in her present state anyway. But at the same time, if there was someone who wasn’t supposed to be here…she slumped back onto the bed, “Glem det, Seamus vil slå rumpa. (Forget it, Seamus will beat their arses.)” She looked over seeing Tara, “What’s going on, seanmhair?”
As the hatch opened and the group made their hellos, Seamus stood, sword-point down and his hands resting on the pommel as he watched the group from the path in front of the house, looking every bit of the Clan Marshall.
Seamus McKenzie
Devlin stopped a respectable distance away, seeing the man standing guard like something out of the Eddas. Kirsten and Ada, packs, shields, and sheathed blades in tow moved past Devlin and approached Helka and walked back down the path a ways with her. Oddvar moved past Devlin and walked right up to Seamus. “Seamus this lad here is Devlin Mattsen. He was there the day you came for Ragna. The two women with him are his wife Kirsten and his sister-in-law Ada. They are are friends of Ragna’s. They are the first of the clan to arrive at Lady Tara’s request.” Devlin set his things down carefully, walked over and offered Seamus his hand. “Marshall McKenzie.”
Seamus took the man’s hand in a firm but not challenging grip and said “Mr. Mattsen. A pleasure. Welcome. Please, get your things and come up to the house. I’ll introduce you to the Chief.” The sword, moved by one hand as if it were a dagger, lifted up and then settled flat on Seamus’s shoulder. “Follow me.” and he led Devlin and Oddvar back towards the house.
Devlin picked up his things and waited for Kirsten and Ada to join him and then followed Seamus and Oddvar back toward the house. The two women were whispering quietly to each other and Devlin shook his head glancing at Oddvar. “I don’t like the sound of that whispering.” Oddvar chuckled, “You know the rule, Devlin, stay out of their business. It’s safer for all involved.” Ada grinned, “At least one of you has some sense.” Ada was one of Ragna’s closest friends, and she was not intimidated by Seamus. Okay maybe a little, but if Ragna chose him then she wasn’t worried, impressed, but not worried. She stepped forward next to Seamus. “I’m Ada Moen. Congratulations Marshall, didn’t have time to tell you or Ragna before you left,” she’s grinning, it had been spectacular. “How is she?”
Helka spoke briefly to Kirsten and Ada and then moved back down the path with Cuyler to the shuttle where they put in the call to Revna.

In the shuttle Cuyler keyed up the com unit making the connection to the Manhattan and Revna. Revna appeared on the screen after a few moments, took in the look on her Da’s face and the tears on her mother’s face. “What’s happened?” And the story was told quickly with as much detail as they could give. “Seamus said to tell Mike ‘t’s time we did what we swore to do that summer.’ And I have a letter for you from Tara McKenzie.” Cuyler scanned it with the computer and then the file was transferred to Revna. She opened the file and read it.
