Office to the Head of Judicial System - (Where No Man...)

You will forgive that I am not all that prepared. Please follow me.” Astrid took one final worried look at her staff and then sauntered back into her office. Like the woman, it was organized and formal. Her dark teal skirted suit was impeccable and her shoes looked high but she seemed as at ease as she would be barefoot. : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : It was a lovely office with custom simulated wood furniture in a very french style. The florals on the fabric were far more modern, but still gave the impression of french style. Astrid looked comfortable in her surroundings, like she fit there. One entire wall was floor to ceiling windows. In front of it was her desk and chair facing the door they just entered. There were two chairs in front of the desk and a sitting area past that complete with heavy looking bookshelves on one wall and a buffet along the other. And in one corner hung her judge’s robes, a far more modern affair than the giant mumu’s that used to be used. Still it was black and would give the impression of imposing impartiality and the weight of authority. : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : “So, tell me a little about yourself in regards to your work experience?” : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Rousseau, HotJ : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Solo took careful note to soak in their surroundings. This was, after all, the one who would soon handle what was to come of people on Oed. Sure there was trouble now. Trouble always came around, no matter the place. But soon…he knew…she would find herself unable to handle the trouble in store. : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Nevertheless, he had a role to play. He sat down in a chair and held his demeanor, despite his thoughts. “I’ve done a lot of traveling throughout my life. And even growing up I knew I would be traveling. I have a lot of work experience in administration. Primarily I’ve done work with judges, lawyers, even some police work…but it all had to do with administration.” He gave the basic answer, suspecting she would have her own questions to ask. : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : -John Solo (Leamas) : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : She sat down at her desk and began rummaging to find his file. “Well, we aren’t Star Fleet, but this is a Federation outpost. Our filing systems and work load systems are all from the United Federation of Planets. We can handle cases for all Federation allied species. Non Federation species receive slightly differing treatment and are then extradited to that territory’s law department if possible. If not, they are subject to Federation laws but it requires a great deal more red tape. Are you familiar with these processes?” : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : Rousseau, HotJ : : : : : : : : : : : : : : John nodded with an ere of confidence. “Yes, I am.” And if he wasn’t, it wouldn’t take much for him to catch someone who did and get what information he needed from them anyway on the processes. However, he was prepared for her to ask about what he knew, so he kept his mind trained on Astrid, attempting to glean whatever thoughts he could of what she would ask, no matter what it was. : : : : : : : : : : : : : : -John Solo (Leamas) : : : : : : : : : : : : She merely nodded as she finally got his file. “How many years experience do you have in Paralegal and Law Assist work? And please expand on any Federation law specific experience.” Her first question had been quite leading but now she wanted him to expand on his own knowledge to her while she looked over his file. One of the things she was good at, as a Judge was hearing conversation while reading. Strange, as it was quite rare for someone to be able to do both, but Judges tended to learn how to do it out of necessity. Shuffling through all the red tape that was the Judicial process, it was vital to an efficient court room. : : : : : : : : : : : : Rousseau, HotJ : : : : : : : : : : To be fair, Leamas never inquired how much time this former man had in experience with his line of work. But he was confident the dossier she was currently reading over would have the appropriate amount. However, he did know that this particular individual was typically involved in one set of judiciary oversights in the Federation, varying here and there, but usually remaining the same. : : : : : : : : : : “I’ve typically been involved in cases of dispute involving civilian rights being violated by either starfleet or another member world for the past decade,” he replied. He paused, allowing her to inquire further. So far she had been the only absolutely thorough one of the heads. If he couldn’t get this position, he would likely need to convince her of his power through other, more public means. : : : : : : : : : : -John Solo (Leamas) : : : : : : : : She did look at his record and know how long he had been doing this line of work, but she did find it strange that he did not answer her question. Used to her questions being answered to the letter, she looked up and watched him for a moment. It was possible he passed over the first part in order to answer the second but then again he had not been very specific. Was he trying to get this job or was he “phoning it in” as they say. “Are you looking to do much the same here?” : : : : : : : : “Why OED V?” : : : : : : : : Rousseau, HotJ : : : : : : : Solo was on point with the next question. “Most certainly! Not that I wish it to happen. Oed is on the outskirts of federation space. And, if we’re going to be honest, I think it highly likely for Starfleet to take some small liberties with their roles here on Oed. My hope is to be here for the people. To help them out in the face of potential opposition to their goals here.” He shrugged his shoulders. “At least that’s my take anyway. I’m sure others will talk about cooperating with Starfleet and how they help us out. In the end, people are people, and we need to make sure that people are abiding by the laws here.” : : : : Truth be told, Leamas was speaking out some of his honest thoughts. He knew Starfleet and the civilian people were at times, at odds with each other. And, ultimately, he was there to inspire the people. Starfleet wasn’t a need. They were just a staple that could be removed. : : : : -John Solo (Leamas) : : “Well, as much as I would like to hope that such a situation isn’t needed, it can be from time to time. I don’t think I have anyone on staff yet with those particular experiences. Can you start tomorrow on a temporary basis until a background check and paperwork can be submitted? Is the posted salary a good range for you? If not, you will have to take that up with Resources.” : : Rousseau, HotJ : Bump for when Tony gets back

OOC: Thanks for the bump :)

IC: Solo nodded. “Absolutely to both questions. You’ll have no issues with me there. Are there any current cases you wish me to start on, or would you rather I just get acclimated to the place first?”

Truth be told, Leamas was happy to just in the department. Access to the information was essential for his operation.

-John Solo (Leamas)

“I think I would rather you spend the week getting to know how the place is run. Sofi will pick a Judge’s assistant for you to shadow for two days and a paralegal to shadow for two days. Then you will shadow a judge for a day. After that, you can begin working on legal briefings for a judge. We will go from there.” She was glad there was no need for her to fight about money. He seemed easy going and was eager to please. By the time he started shadowing his judge, his credentials would be in.

“Well then, if you will take the rest of the day off, we shall see you tomorrow morning bright and early. I don’t think anyone is emotionally capable of helping you today and most people will be leaving the office early here due to the tragic demise of one of our own.”
