Lieutenant JG John Reeves stepped out of the turbolift and into the bustling corridor of Deck 5. The familiar hum of the USS Merrimack’s systems resonated through the deck plating beneath his boots as he adjusted the collar of his duty uniform. His meeting with the Chief of Security had concluded, and now Starfleet regulations required the next item on his schedule: a routine physical examination in Sickbay.
Reeves carried himself with the disciplined bearing expected of a security officer. His eyes automatically scanned the corridor ahead, noting crew members moving between duty stations, a pair of engineers discussing diagnostics near a junction panel, and a medical orderly crossing toward the turbolift.
New ship. New crew. New assignment.
The thought lingered in his mind as he continued down the corridor.
The USS Merrimack would be his home for the foreseeable future. Every transfer came with adjustments—learning procedures, earning trust, and finding his place within the chain of command. Fortunately, security work remained the same regardless of the posting.
Protect the ship.
Protect the crew.
Complete the mission.
The illuminated medical insignia mounted beside a set of sliding doors came into view at the end of the corridor.
Reeves slowed his pace as he approached Sickbay, straightening his uniform one final time. Starfleet physicians had a habit of asking questions that seemed unrelated to physical fitness, but regulations were regulations.
He stepped up to the entrance.
The doors parted with a soft hiss.
Reeves crossed the threshold into Sickbay and came to a stop just inside.
“Lieutenant Junior Grade John Reeves, reporting for my scheduled physical examination.”
Lieutenant Junior Grade John Reeves
Security USS Merrimack NCC-2346A young ensign slightly shorter than Reeves smiled, “Welcome aboard sir,” She was wearing the medical blue dress, had brown doe-like eyes and black hair, her skin was one of the palest shades of white that Reeves would have ever seen and her dark hair only made it stand out more. It looked almost unnatural just how bleached out it looked. “I’m Nurse Emily, Doctor Graham is just on his way back apparently there was a chemical accident in the science department. He said if you were to show up, I was to begin and he’d take over when he got back.”
“If you just want to sit over there,” she pointed at one of the beds. “Did you have a good trip getting to the Merrimack?”
Lt. Grahams, CMO
Lieutenant Reeves offered the young nurse a polite nod before moving toward the indicated biobed.
“Thank you, Ensign.”
He took a seat on the edge of the biobed, his posture remaining straight despite being off duty for the moment. Years of security training and Starfleet discipline made it difficult for him to truly relax in a professional setting.
“The trip was uneventful, which is usually the best kind of trip in Starfleet.”
A faint smile crossed his face.
“I transferred in from my previous assignment a few days ago. No delays, no plasma conduit ruptures, no hostile encounters, and nobody tried to hijack the shuttle.”
He folded his hands in his lap.
“So by Starfleet standards, I’d call it a remarkably successful journey.”
Reeves glanced around Sickbay briefly before returning his attention to Nurse Emily.
“The ship seems impressive from what I’ve seen so far. Still getting familiar with the layout and the crew.”
His expression remained friendly and professional.
“How long have you been assigned to the Merrimack, Ensign?”

Security USS Merrimack NCC-2346Nurse Emily almost looked disappointed that there were no heroic stories for Lieutenant Reeves to tell, but she kept her friendly smile on for the Security officer.
“Seven months,” she replied, “At first I was nervous to be on such an impressive ship but the crew here are all really nice,”
The door to Sickbay swished open, and she quickly looked over, but seeing it was just another nurse arriving back from her break, she turned back to Reeves again.
“What made you decide to be a Security Officer?”
Lt. Grahams, CMO
Lieutenant J.G. John Reeves smiled faintly at the question.
“I suppose it’s because I’ve always believed someone has to stand between danger and everyone else,” he answered. “Not because I was looking for excitement, but because I wanted to protect people.”
He rested his hands comfortably in his lap as he spoke.
“My father served in Starfleet, and I grew up around people who took that responsibility seriously. Watching them taught me that security isn’t about phasers or arrests—it’s about keeping the ship safe so everyone else can do their jobs.”
Reeves chuckled softly.
“Most days that means patrols, inspections, paperwork, and helping crewmembers find the right deck when they’re lost. It’s not exactly the holonovels.”
He glanced around Sickbay before returning his attention to Nurse Emily.
“But every once in a while something does happen, and when it does, I want the crew to know they can count on Security to be ready.”
He offered an easy smile.
“So far, the Merrimack has been a good posting. I’d rather have quiet days than exciting ones. Quiet usually means everyone gets to go home at the end of their shift.”
