M’Mera was excited to be back at the Starbase. She was going to go aboard and do some shopping and get some real raw meat instead of the replicated kind. Maybe she could get a case and get it sent to the Mess Hall so she could some weekly aboard ship at least.

Loping down the hall she stopped at Elyss’ door. The other woman had indicated the wish to check out the station and it would be nice to have a friend along. She was dressed in casual Caitian dress which consisted of a wrap around robe in a soft beige color and a bracelet on her ankle. She wore no shoes as they did not fit Caitian feet and she hated shoes. As soon as she extended her claws they made holes in them. Her mane was braided in dreadlocks and beaded throughout.
She hoped Elyss was ready she thought as she walked up.

Elyss was actually waiting outside her quarters for M’Mera. She wore a flowy, printed, blue skirt and a one shouldered, close fitting top in a lighter shade. She’d tucked her credits card in one pocket and a lip gloss in the other, ready for whatever the day would bring. When she spotted the Caitian woman heading her way, Elyss started bouncing a little with excitement. “Hey! How are you? I’m so looking forward to a real ‘girls day’. Shopping, food and fun—what more could one ask for?”

“‘A girrl’ss day? Thiss iss a human cusstom?” M’Mera asked curiously, her head tilted to one side in curiosity. “I wassn’t awarre therre wass a name forr femaless visiting a sspace sstation.”M’Mera asked as she began to lead the way down the corridor toward the lift.

Stepping past an Ensign, who held the doors open, Elyss smiled in silent ‘thanks’ and answered M’Mera. “Yes it is. A human way to describe a certain kind of day spent with other females. It can involve shopping, eating, drinking, dancing, a spa day or many other things.” Sighing with a rush of anticipation, she bounced a little in her sandals. “It’s been a long time since I had a day like this, and I’m really looking forward to it. Did you bring your credits card? I plan on spending a chunk of change.”

“Ahh, yess. We had dayss like thiss on Cait when we would go to the mud bathss or on a hunt. Yess, I have my crreditss. I plan to buy a lot of frressh meat and have it ssent to the sship’ss galley forr me.”

Elyss and M’Mera finally made their way down the ramp and into the SB. All the lights and stores gave Zavey a tingling feeling. It had been quite a while since she’d had a shopping trip like the one she hoped to have there. Nothing was off the menu of things to look at or spa treatments to have done. All she could do was hope her feline friend was of the same mind. “Okay, we’re finally here. What should we do first?”

“I am going to follow my nosse!” M’Mera said as her cat eyes squinted and her nose twitched as she followed it to a meat stall. Ordering several cuts of beef and chicken she paid for them and had a crate of them sent back up to the ship with orders for the galley to keep them set aside for her. Now that was taken care of they could enjoy their day. “Yourr turrn now to choosse what we do,” she said to Elyss. “I have no idea what you do forr a ‘girrlss day.”

Looking forward, something sparkling caught the Lt’s attention. “Ooooo, look, jewelry. I love jewelry! Care to take a closer look?” She asked the Caitian, hoping to get a positive answer.

“Oh, yesss! I could usse a new ankle brracelet.” M’Mera said as she followed Elyss into the shop.

As they entered, Elyss let out a little squeal of delight at the assortment of jewels in settings befitting anyone, from queen to lowly commoner. At first, she didn’t know where to look because it was all so beautiful. But then, her eyes landed on a display of earring/necklace/bracelet sets in the particular shade of blue she’d been looking for–one that matched her eyes. Mirrors dotted around the shop so one could see how the trinkets looked on a body and she was quick to find one. Holding one of the earrings up to a lobe, she smiled. “Oh yes, this is exactly what I want.” She spun in search of M’Mera to show her the find and walked over to her while perusing wristlets and jeweled belts. “Look!” Elyss held out the pieces to the Caitian for her opinion.

“Ohhh, verry prretty! Let me sssee them next to yourr skin!”
M’Mera studied them and nodded, “Yess! They ssuit you! Arre you buying them?”

“I found thiss nice ankle brracelet.” M’Mera showed Elyss the brracelet she’d purrchassed. It had sparkly zirconiums set on a soft velvet anklet. She didn’t like anything that rubbed too much or would rub off her fur. A chain would just get lost in her fur.

Lt. M’Mera COS

“It’s beautiful and will stand out against your coloring. Is jewelry a regular part of your culture?” She honestly didn’t know if some Caitians liked to run around with only their fur, unadorned and unclothed. On the starships she’d served on, the odd feline crew member would always be in a uniform tunic.

M’Mera grinned mischievously. “On Cait we Caitianss arren’t much into clothes other than short tunics. We put ourr arrtistrry into jewelry. Mosstly ankle orr wrrisst brraceletss. Though earrringss too. Not necklacess as they would hang down too much and get caught up in busshess and ssuch when we arre hunting orr climbing.”

Lt. M’Mera COS

Taking a moment to envision what M’Mera said, Elyss nodded. “Yes, I can understand that. I love jewelry—and fancy dress occasions. When one wears a uniform eveery day, it tends to get boring. Let’s pay for these and see if we can find a shop that sells easy clothing. I like to be comfortable when I sleep and when I paint.”

“I find the uniforrmss verry consstrricting, that isss why you will ssee me in tunic and pantss on my downtime. Sso finding a new sset will be welcome.”M’Mera said as she went to the counter and handed her credit chip to the teller.

As the two females walked around the station looking for just the right kind of shop to sell them lounge wear, Elyss felt a twinge behind her eyes. She was having such a good time with M’Mera that she didn’t pay much attention to it. “What kind of mission would you like for the Memorial this next time?” She wanted a first contact because those were always interesting. They weren’t always gentle, sometimes they would erupt with violence, but she still thought they were fascinating.

Once the question had been asked, Elyss spotted a promising shop off to their right. Listening for M’Mera’s answer, Zavey just pointed in the direction they needed to go.

M’Mera followed Elyss’ lead into the shop as she answered, “Ahh, well perssonally I prrefer a nice sscientific misssion or diplomatic. Firrsst contactss give me indigesstion, all the concerrn of whetherr the new sspeciess is going to be aggresssive. So much morre worrk forr me planning contingency planss.”

Lt. M’Mera COS

As the two of them began looking around at the clothing offered and the other customers, Elyss took a sudden side step that put her behind a large mirror. Her eyes grew large and her breathing sped up. It looked like she was frightened or anxious about something. No matter where M’Mera moved or how far away she got, Elyss stayed where she was, refusing to move.

M’Mera paused and back peddled toward the mirror looking at Elyss curiously. She even sniffed the air as if she had caught the scent of something coming off of Elyss. She looked around confused, it was if Elyss was reacting to something. “Elyss? Arre you alrright? What’ss wrrong?”
She herself could see nothing off, just other members of Starfleet and some of the Starbase civilians shopping.

Lt. M’Mera COS

Her mouth had gone dry and all she wanted was to get out of that store and away from the danger she thought lurked there. “See that man over by the hats? Three years ago, he—or someone who looked just like him, accosted me on the streets of Cairo. I was alone and out of uniform. He followed me into one of the allys where I went to take a shortcut to save some time in getting back to the ship. He caught up with me and started yelling but I didn’t understand the language he spoke. After waiving his arms around and backing me up against a wall, he struck me twice.”

M’Mera’s eyes slotted at this recitation. What a horrible thing to have happened to her friend. Moving forward she moved her own body between Elyss and the man she had pointed out.

“Come on,” She said as she gently took Elyss’ arm and lead toward the back of the shop where they would both be out of sight of anyone else in the shop or walking by.

Lt. M’Mera COS

Elyss allowed herself to be led further back into the shop. “I’m sorry, M’Mera. I know it’s been three years, but it was a terrible incident. When I got back to the ship I went straight to medical. That’s when I found out my left eye socket was fractured.” She tried not to peek around the garments to check and see if the man was still there. “I didn’t know who he was and didn’t understand anything he said, so I never brought charges against him.”

Lieutenant Junior Grade Elyss Zavey

M’Mera’s protective instincts were ignited and she snarled, her eyes slotted in anger. “And you didn’t have the man charrged??” She managed to get out, her anger making her chew her words. “He desserved to be charrged!” With a quick look turn and crane of her neck she looked back out into the shop to see if the accused man was still there. If he ever knew what was good for him she hoped he was gone. Her tail lashed in her agitation and she opened and closed her fists, the claws moving in and out.

Lt. M’Mera COS

Elyss could feel the mood of the Caitian as she went from easy going to ready for action. “M’Mera, its alright. Please calm yourself—I’m not even sure its the same man. They look alike, but it was three years ago…” She manuevered her position so she could see around the mirror. “Look, he’s leaving, so everything’s alright.” The suspected assaulter was just picking up his package from the cashier and crossing the threshold of the store back into the hubub of others milling about.

Another pin prick of pain lanced acoss her vision in the left eye. Knowing what it usually meant, Elyss realized she would need to cut their shopping trip short in order to get to her quarters and lay down. There was no way to know what the severity of the migraine would be, once it hit. However, she thought there was time to choose a few things from the store they were in before making their way back to the Merrimack. “Why don’t we see what we can find, shall we? Let’s not think about that unpleasantness again.” And to encourage M’Mera’s thougts back to shopping, Zavey headed off to a rack displaying a long white dress with bare shoulders. “Ooooo look at this…”

Lieutenant Junior Grade Elyss Zavey
Junior Science Officer USS Merrimack

M’Mera huffed and began to breathe slowly in and out to calm herself before turning and following Elyss around the mirror. “You sshould have charrged him,” she muttered under her breath. She gazed at the dress and then looked at Elyss. “I think that would definitely look good on you.” She said as she spotted a tunic and pant set in a nice earthen brown that looked like it was her size.

Lt. M’Mera COS

Still working to sidetrack M’Mera away from the assault in her past, Elyss decided to take the garment. Carrying it around with her, she followed the security officer over to the clothing she was looking over. “You know, you have a beautiful coat. I’m not sure it’s alright to say that. But do you ever enhance it with jewels or a jeweled jacket?” The prodromal (aura) in her left eye began pulsing and growing larger. M’Mera wouldn’t be aware of it because it was a visual symptom of the oncoming migraine. Elyss knew they really needed to get back to the ship before she became incapacitated with pain.

“You can compliment my furr anytime you like.” M’Mera said with a wide toothy grin. She wasn’t afraid to be herself around Elyss, the other woman seemed to accept her as she was. “On Cait, forr fesstivalss we do drrape ourrsselvess in jewelss. I jusst haven’t found an opporrtunity to do that herre.” She picked up the tunic set and led Elyss over to the till, she could tell by the stiffness of the other woman and her smell of something like pain that there was something that was very wrong. She had no idea if it had been seeing that man or if it was something else but she wanted to get Elyss back to the ship.

As she paid for both selections out of her credit account she said to Elyss, “Let me, I know you arre not feeling well though I am not sure if it hass ssomething to do with that Chrr’tah! Come on, let’ss get you back to the ship.” Taking their packages, M’Mera linked her arm with Elyss’ and began to lead her out of the shop.
