Working away on deck 10 with several others, Elyss became aware of a voice she hadn’t heard before. This one had a British accent which peaked her curiosity. Turning to NEnsign Smith at the station across from hers, she motioned off in the direction where it was coming from. “Who is that talking with the accent?”He looked up and smiled. “Oh, that’s Lt Malone, our department chief. Haven’t you met him yet?”
She turned to observe whether he was within her line of vision. “No, he wasn’t available when I got here so I reported to the CO and XO. NELt Perch told me that once Malone knew my area of specialty was genetics, that he would steer me to those kinds of assignments. Is that true?”
Smith nodded while checking for growth in a petri dish. “He sure will, provided we have something in that area currently in the labs.” He also let his gaze follow the same path with Elyss. “He’s kind of dreamy with that accent.” Here, he wiggled his eyebrows up and down suggestively.
“Oh really?” Zavey laughed softly, sensing Smith might be a little starry eyed when it came to the DH.
While he nodded back wishfully, she got off of her stool and headed in the Englishman’s direction. One of the other scientist was just walking off from the tall man when she arrived. “Lt Malone, I’m Elyss Zavey. I arrived while you were occupied, but I wanted to introduce myself.” The first thing she noticed about him was how thin he was.
Lieutenant Junior Grade Elyss Zavey
Junior Science Officer USS MerrimackIt felt good to be in the labs again, between away missions, some planet side research and the unfortunate incident Lance hadn’t actually spent much time in the labs lately. Not that things had gone to rats, most things could be handled remotely and the Yeomen knew what they were doing.
Whilst he’d been indisposed he’d gotten a few notifications one being a new officer coming aboard. Which was great news a new face around the department and someone to share the load of away missions with.
“Welcome aboard Lt Zavey, sorry I wasn’t available when you came on board, lets just say not all rocks on away missions should be licked.” he said extending a hand in his own quirky British way. “I looke dat your file, it says genetics are your specialty? A good specialty to have. Where was your last posting?” he asked, his space time was stil lower than most having been a planet based officer for most of his career.
- Lt.Malone CSO
’..not all rocks on away missions should be licked?’ What did that mean? Shaking herself free from the odd quote, Elyss shook his hand. “After graduation, I spent three years as a teaching assistant at the academy and then four years on the USS Brigadoon. She is a science vessel. Then I came here.”

Junior Science Officer USS MerrimackLance indicated a seat to Elyss as he sat down in his own chair, “That’s a good start to an early career, what was the USS Brigadoon studying if you don’t mind me asking.” he said.
“We had several missions, from investigating plant species on Goran IV to mapping the genetics of a new species that made contact with our ship.” Of course, there had been others, but she gave him a snapshot of her experience.
“We run a fairly relaxed lab here, I’m not big into airs and graces, the enlisted science crew do a dam good job and are cracking assistants, trust me anything you leave in their hands will be safe. And in return we ignore the PO’s snail racing side hussle, it’s good for morale on the most part.” Lance said mentioning one of the strangest parts of the lab culture.
“Have you had much Away team and Bridge experience LT?” he asked, the thought of not having to do all the away missions was nice, it left more time for his research.
-Lt (jg) Malone CSO
She crossed her legs in the chair. “I’ve had more away team experience than bridge duty, but I’m always up for a new challenge. By the way, my field of expertise is genetics. I just wanted to add that in there in case you were making assignments soon.”
Lieutenant Junior Grade Elyss Zavey
Junior Science Officer USS MerrimackLance listened to the experience that the other officer had it was defintily good experience especially for away missions, more than he had when he first came aboard.
He nodded “Yes I heard your field was genetics, do you have any future projects in mind?” he asked, “I’m a believer in continuous study, if you can find something you wish to add to your studies I’m more than willing to support it. Merrimack is an exploration vessel, but scientific study is also exploration.” Lance had his own projects around xenostudies.
“Although I would recomend spending sometime looking into astronomical anomalies, geological anomalies and the like, the Captain is decent, but if you’re on the bridge he’ll expect answers and solutions quickly. Caught me off guard my first bridge duty.” He suggested rememebring how he had to wing it and still did most of the time.
-Lt(jg) Malone CSO
Her smile was genuine. “I’ll try not to let that happen then.” She’d done bridge duty before but would rather spend her time in the labs than just sitting and monitoring a station. “As far as other studies not in the genetic field, I had just begun learning about spacial rifts and cosmic strings before this assignment came through. I’d like to continue those studies if that’s alright?”
