With a beep the comm call came through and on the tiny desktop for the Captain’s work was done the Commodore came up on the screen. Stones looked confused a moment given the angle, =/\= Uh good morning Captain Glen. Please correct me if I’m wrong but there seems to be a and unexpected angle and room sizing issue on my end. The room appears far smaller then what I recall the Mariner classes briefing room has, and you all look quite uncomfortable. Should I send an emergency engineering team over to fix your communication displays? =/\= He asked.

Cross quickly scribbled something on her Padd and passed it on to Glen ’ Just tell him there is nothing to worry about and get on with whatever he has to say before we go crazy ‘.

“No, that won’t be necessary, Commodore, but if you could make the briefing short,” Glen said. “It’s getting kind of crowded in here and I’m not sure we have room for a long briefing!”

“With that in mind I’d like to get quickly started,” Glen told the Commodore, “While we’ve been waiting, we’ve had a long discussion here already, and the main thing I wanted to ask was what would be considered a successful mission outcome here? Is this a rescue mission? Is it covert reconnaissance? Is it to promote the Federation values and technology? We are uncomfortable with the latter as these people have already made their views known with great clarity and certainty. Trying to buy them with beads and trinkets isn’t going to work. What happens if we find obnoxious or abhorrent practices? We aren’t the Galactic Police Force! The presence of a Federation starship is likely to inflame tensions rather than calm them. And if we find a natural disaster has occurred, or they have been kidnapped or attacked by some undiscovered alien power, we are only a single ship, and a long way from home. A disaster response would be better served by one of the many hospital ships. I have an excellent medical team here, but we have neither the beds, the supplies and equipment, nor the personnel in sufficient quantities to deal with that kind of event. And if we were to get into some kind of military stand-off, it is better to begin that right away with a show of force to intimidate an opponent; showcasing our weapons capabilities, rather than to limp away and tell them we’ll be back. The latter could actually lead to a worse situation if they decided we were easy prey. The only mission which makes any sense here is one of covert reconnaissance, and once again, an intelligence starship would be better equipped for that kind of long-range surveillance work.”

After the brief cut out the Commodore came back on, =/\= Ah sorry Captain seems the base’s comm system had a restart. To answer your questions, I simply do not have the answers exactly. Obviously if you go there and they are fine but doing illegal things by Federation law, we can not impose the Federation’s law on them. The Prime Directive would apply there. As for issues with unknown threats then either try to establish First contact, or failing that what information you can gather then retreat. Or if too dangerous to do simply retreat. As for them being fine, but inflamed by you showing up and checking in, then leave what we provided on a nearby asteroid in system and depart peacefully. If say you get there and its a matter of a broken long range communication buoy they couldn’t fix, offer to help, if refused, then depart, or if accepted help where possible. You will be the lead point of decision out there, your call goes, and Starfleet will support you given they are not Federation members. We simply are providing a check in at the request of concerned Federation members. The fact we dont know what is going on is why we’re sending you, a S&R response ship would not have the defenses for a true threat, nor a probe the scanners to fully analyze the situation and provide timely response. If upon arrival and fully evaluating the situation you feel threatened or not able to handle any emergencies leave, or call in the calvary for support. A response say in a disaster would be about 2 days once you arrive.=/\= he explained.

She then turned to those present ‘’Any feelings of doubt or apprehension about the outcome or consequences you may be worried about and want to clarify with the Commodore ?’’ the CMO asked.

Joe raised an eyebrow, looked at Cross and asked. Is it just me that finds it odd that they feel they need someone with adequate firepower to do nothing more than show up and say hello? I mean I’m sorry to sound repetitive, but something smells. And it doesn’t smell of roses. ”

‘’Like wise’’ Cross replied whether the Commodore heard her or not she didn’t give a darn ‘’ It seem we are the police,the search and rescue ship ..so much for to find new life and new civilization!’‘.

Max looked over at the Chief Medical Officer and said, “I do not have any additional questions at this time. I believe we have what we need and should be good to go, at least from an engineering stand point.” Max then waited to see what else went on. He was ready to get going on the next mission and knew it would not be as smooth as it might be.

The CMO nodded to Max ,she too was ready to get out of that room but waited, perhaps the COS and CSO had questions of their own.Knowing the Captain was not going to be on the bridge Cross did not relish the fact that there was no one else to replace her .

Since the Captain was unavailable Cross was next with regards to the most senior staff =/\= Roger that on my way =/\= she replied and left the briefing room in a hurry, so she could return back without much delay.

Lance had been listening and doodling Venus fly traps on his note pad. He had a lot of respect for those who left their comfortable worlds in order to follow a dream or a calling and say up fledgling colonies.

=/\=Commodore, what do we know of the flora and fawner of this planet, their sudden radio silence could be down to some zoonotic bacteria or parasite which may have wiped the colony out. It isn’t an unknown thing, there have been plenty of examples of microorganisms mutating into something capable of decimating entire populations. =/\=

=/\= Given the origins from the original colonists much of the local fauna currently are crossbred Earth based plant life with the local types. Given the colony has been there without issues for so long we don’t think any sudden mutations occurred. But equally given the lack of formal contact and information we do get is second or third hand we can’t rule it out either. The simple fact is that’s why we’re sending you out to check in, it could just be they have an equipment malfunction, or maybe the current colony leaders choose to fully cut off any and all contact, or some other natural or threat occurred. Investigation upon arrival to the system will tell you much on then how to proceed. Respect the Prime Directive obviously and your own safety but reach out to the colony if you can, then report back. McDuff didn’t bother to speculate. He didn’t see the point. He would wait and see what the situation was when they arrived and base he reactions on the findings.

On hearing Cameron Cross took a couple of steps backwards ‘’Lt , guess I don’t really have to tell you but security might play a big part once we get down since we don’t know what the team will find’’ the CMO was quite aware that they may face hostility ‘’ I have a gut feeling we won’t be welcomed with open arms ‘’.

Max was excited about the next mission but it would likely not include engineering. This will give Max time to better to know his crew and they can run drills and tests on things on the ship. There were a number of items he wanted to improve but had just not had the time yet. He waited for the dismissal request before getting up and heading out.
