Tom tapped the chime and waited for an acknowledgment. Riley wouldn’t remember any personal interactions with him, only what was in notes and recordings taken during past meetings, and he was ready for the awkwardness of Riley’s psionic abilities telling Riley that there was nothing there contrary to the evidence of his own eyes and ears.

Riley startled at the sound of the chime. It wasn’t a reaction to which he was accustomed. Even when he wasn’t attuned to the people at his door, his mind picked up a faint whisper of consciousness, much like a person could recognize the sound of footsteps before explicitly registering them in his mind.

“Come,” his voice carried across the room and through the door, and he fixed his dark eyes curiously on the entrance to his office.
