After visiting with the CSO and looking at the work the Science teams were doing Magnus realised that there was someone he had neglected to visit, the Intelligence Officer. Somewhere in the back of his mind he could hear his cousin Peter berate him for it, the two had a freindly rivalry ever since Peter became an intelligence officer. He shook his head and ordered the lift to change heading. Moments later he’d arrived at his destination, made his way to the office and pressed the Chime.

XO

Reia had basically settled into her new office although she couldn’t get the smell of rabbits out of one corner. Most people might not notice it but she had grown up with several.

“Open.” she said lighting a scented candle.

  • Reia, CIO

Magnus entered the room, surprised by several new smells he half coughed “Ensign, what an interesting aroma” He said returning to his smile “Are you settling in alright?” He asked.

XO

Instinctively, Reia rose to her feet to greet the new XO. Her Orion grace was bred into her movements and not something she could consciously curtail without a lot of thought.

“Yes. I think I’m settling in quite nicely. My apologies about the… Um…” she shrugged and pointed to the corner where the rabbit cage had been, “I should probably have another look at those environmental controls. What can I do for you Commander?”

  • Reia, CIO

Magnus placed his hands behind his back as he examined the room with care “Oh probably plenty of things, I’ll settle with a little walkthrough of your operation here, I’m doing a little surprise inspection of the Senior staff, getting my lay of the land so to speak.”

XO

Reia sat back down and glanced around the room herself.

“Well, my personal operation is called the great unpacking. I’m about as new here as you are and I’ve been very busy with the boarding routine and a certain party.” she explained with a bright smile.

“My professional operation is to gather as much information on anything we may come across, or in contact with, for Star Fleet. Also, I prefer to be as much help to anybody on board as I can be. I like to put puzzles together even if they frustrate me.”

  • Reia, CIO

Magnus nodded, crossing his arms he continued his scanning of the unprepared room “Good, I’ve had little time to look through your file” He lied “Would you mind giving me a little recap, a little highlight show if you will” He smiled at the Half Orion the sort of charming smile that managed to stay professional.

XO

Reia didn’t know Magnus well enough to judge whether he had actually read her file or not. Neither one would surprise her.

“Well I grew up in Australia.raised by my grandparents. I had a few troubles in school around the age of twelve, but those were personal things, not academic. I joined Star Fleet and seriously considered becoming a Doctor but was guided towards Intelligence and, in the end, I think it was the right fit.”

  • Reia, CIO

Magnus nodded before I begin I imagine you might have some questions for me?” He said questioningly. He didn’t seem overly conerned by the prospect.

XO

A sly smile crossed Reia’s face.

“What makes you certain I haven’t read your file too? I am curious, why this posting?” she asked.

  • Reia, CIO

Magnus chuckled at her response “My dear Miss Shandy, if you haven’t read my file yet I’ll be deeply disappointed and insulted” He took a seat, crossing his legs as he did “Honestly, it was the first opportunity I got. A few years ago I did something that tickled the upper brass the wrong way. We made some people look bad and others look redundant, this resulted in several demotions, mine included and a rather harsh sentence of 4 years Academic teaching duties. After two years Captain Julian King decided to step down and the Fleet wanted an experienced first officer on the Genesis, I was offered the job and I took it” He explained as if it were the most common thing in the world.

XO

Reia knew there was more to the story. There just always was. She would have to do another deep dive through his file.

“Redundant? oh dear. Perhaps I should be careful of my career.” she said jokingly, “I understand this ship has been through a lot of changes lately. I’m hoping that everybody new on board, myself included, will end up being seen as a good thing. So, you came to me. What else would you like to know?”

  • Reia, Intel

“Mostly what you do, how you do it and something like that. I’ve had a few Intelligence officers on ships I’ve served with, most have developed their own styles of doing things so I’m interested in how you approach the very monotomous job that is Intelligence Chief”

XO

As Reia thought about his question, she glanced down at a box beside her, picked a smaller box out of it, and placed it on the corner of the desk, the slight smell of chocolate wafting through the air before she had a chance to fully open it.

“I don’t think you choose Intelligence, I think it chooses you. I was curious about doing something in the medical field but, maybe my bedside manner just wasn’t what Star Fleet was looking for. I like solving problems, but Science wasn’t for me. The study of people is very interesting so I had two choices. Counseling or Intelligence. When you observe someone, or a group of people, you can learn quite a bit. If you’re very good you can make reasonable assumptions as to a next move. I guess it’s a bit like chess. As for the monotony? My theories on how to deal with that change depending on my mood.”

  • Reia, CIO

Magnus leaned back in his seat a little bit and smiled “Well that sounds fun, tell me” He leaned forward, interlocking his fingers and putting his elbows on his knees “What reasonable assumptions have you made regarding me during our limited interactions.” He asked

XO

Reia looked at Magnus for several long seconds and finally decided to say what was on her mind even though it was probably inappropriate.

“You’re almost as handsome as you think you are sometimes.”

  • Reia, CIO

There was a slight widening of his smile and his eyes narrowed. Magnus leaned back, raising both eyebrows “Only almost, you wound me” theatrically placing his hand over his heart “That’s a lot of work wasted on almost, guess I’ll have to work harder to fit your standards” He never stopped smiling “So you’ve noted my vanity, interesting.”

XO

Reia returned his smile and nodded.

“And I predicted your theatrics as well. Either that or you were going to be very upset with me which, I concede, I might have deserved. I’m certain there’s a lot more to you but I’m not a counselor so, I’ll just have to observe from an Intel point of view.” she explained.

  • Reia, CIO

Magnus chuckled for a moment “A risky move Ensign, had I been any other officer that gambit would not have paid of and probably gotten you on their blacklist” His head cocked slightly to the left “You don’t strike me as a risk-taker, at least not one for unnecessary risks.” He paused for a moment “Intelligence wise you should read their file on me, which I’m told is quite entertaining, from that point on you can continue observing from a quiet corner which you are quite adept at already” His smile never faded “Besides that, I’m an open book, you can ask me whatever” He paused a moment “Tell me, from your Intel point of view what do you make of our crew?”

XO

Magnus was right. His file was rather entertaining but he was wrong in saying that Reia wasn’t a risk taker. Lately she had been taking more personal risks than usual but she wouldn’t be discussing that with the XO.

“Well a lot of this crew has been together for years so they’re like a family. Just because you and I wear the same uniforms doesn’t mean you’ll get an automatic invite to Thanksgiving. Although everybody that I’ve met has been kind and welcoming. I’m sure there are a lot of quirks I’ve yet to discover but I look forward to it.”

  • Reia, CIO

Magnus agreed with a nod “Well then it’s good I don’t celebrate thanksgiving. I recall going to one during my first year at the Academy, not my cup of tea. Yule on the other hand, now that’s a tradition worth upholding. Celebrating high winter with good food and the gifting of presents, now that’s a holiday” Magnus smiled as he reminisced “How about the Captain, I haven’t had much time to get a good read on him but I’d like your opinion, the other crew knew him as a first officer so they have different views.”

XO

Reia paused for a few seconds.

“He is someone that requires further observation. I understand this ship has quite a reputation so if he wasn’t up to the task, Captain King would not have put his name forward for it. As far as Captain Marius the man? Like I said, further observation. And I’m not really one for holidays either. I can’t keep them all straight.” she said with a laugh.

  • Reia, CIO

Bump

Magnus chuckled “What you need is a proper Icelandic Holiday calendar: Yule, easter, Þorri, the summer solstice. Spending all your time in a timeless capsule floating through space wreaks havoc on your sense of time and self” He said shortly “Well I do look forward to getting to know everyone better” A slight smile crept across his face “So did your discussions with our Chief Engineer entertain?” He asked.

XO

Reia met the XO’s eyes and allowed a slight smile. The memory of her time with Dagen caused her pheromones to flare, something she was barely aware of.

“Yes, I would like that calendar very much. And to your second question, you don’t truly expect an answer do you?”

  • Reia, CIO

Magnus shook his head playfully “No answer is an answer in and of itself, remember that” He smiled, there was little to get to know about a department as small as hers but getting to know the person running it was perhaps more so. He’d gotten at least somewhat of an idea regarding her now “Well I don’t want to disturb you any further Ensign, unless you have any burning questions for me I’ll leave you in peace” He didn’t stand up yet

XO

Reia had answered his question that way on purpose. They were both adults but she had never been the type to really discuss her personal life.

“My only question is, what do you need from me as a CIO?”

  • Reia, CIO

There was a moments pause as Magnus considered his answer “Build an internal intelligence network. With my status and relative new status, it will be harder for me to hear the latest gossip, nobody wants to make a bad impression on the new XO. But the head of the ships smallest department, well I don’t think they’ll hesitate then. But rumours don’t make for official reports but I want to have the crews spirit at mind when making decisions.”

XO

Reia observed the Commander for a few seconds before getting up and walking to the replicator.

“Yes, I think I understand you.” she said walking back with her cup of black coffee. Reaching into the box on the corner of her desk she scooped out a hand full of small chocolates and indicated that the Commander could help himself.

There was a slight reaction most people would have missed but one that wouldn’t go past the Intelligence Chief. A slight involuntary raising of his right hand as the offer came. He stopped the movement, smiled politely yet slightly robotically and declined the offer.

“Something to ponder Commander, as your CIO, I am a trained interrogator. I know how to ask questions and I know how to answer them. So don’t you think I answered your question regarding the CE in exactly the manner I meant to?” she asked in a teasing fashion.

  • Reia, CIO

Magnus chuckled “Don’t forget that I too am a trained interrogator who knows how to ask questions and answer them. Furthermore, I’ve been on both ends of such interrogations” His smile turned wry “There’s more than words to an answer. When you’ve done something for long enough you gain a gut instinct, probably no more than your mind understanding body language and reading facial microexpressions but still. A blush is a blush no matter how insignificant.”
