Dagen’s brow furrowed. “Only one has life signs,” he commented and used a virtual ‘highlighter’ to circle the ship that had the life signs on it. “Checking the other ship with no life signs for damage or any kind of internal … accident.” He scanned that ship. So many things could go wrong in early warp vessels. Even later ones. ‘Remember Christopher Pike’ was an engineering proverb that still resonated. When things went wrong on a ship they often could go very wrong. A radiation spill. Loss of life support. Even a momentary fail of the SIF would really mess with one’s day.Dagen, CE
Sensors showed there was nuclear radiation at part of the ship. Until they were nearer, the details were not clear.
-GM
Marishka adjusted her hail to make certain it was only going to the ship with life signs. Now it was up to Commander Marius to be friendly as he put it.
Marishka, CIO
David had walked back to his own station, pulling up the sensor data.
“It appears there’s nuclear radiation coming from within the ship but we will need to move closer to determine it’s nature.” He reported.-David Michaels, CSO
“Sir, I would advise against that.” Ben said sharply. “We do not know how it would affect the ship or the crew.”
Park, BO Tactical/Security
OOC: In this future the effect is known and it’s not a thread anymore, there is a simple vaccine against radiation poinsoning according to Starfleet Canon ;-) - J.“I’m not to concerned by radiation when we are light years away… but do keep an eye on it.”
Aevin’s hand had been hovering, just about to move them closer and then instead he sat back for the oncoming debate. He knew he would end up going closer. In the Genesis or a small craft. It didn’t matter. Someone would say ‘Aevin, take us closer.’ or ‘Aevin, with me.’ And he’d fly in to check out the radiation.
-Ensign Aevin, Helm
Dagen shook his head as he looked at the data. “Our shielding would protect us from that amount of radiation,” he replied. “We can beam in from a distance that that ship exploding wouldn’t touch us. We can keep our distance and be safe and still know what’s up.”
- Dagen, CEThe computer analysed the data received and posted a probability of 78% that the warp engine was powered by nuclear material. There was a 82.5% probability that the engine was damaged and there was a nuclear leak.
GM
“Oh boy,” Dagen muttered as he read the report from the computer. “Not good.” He scratched his forehead as he tapped out the radiation intensity probability. It was never a good thing to have anything nuclear go bad. “I sure hope they built an ejection sequence into this,” he muttered low.
Swiveling on his chair, he reported, “Sirs, there is a very good chance that they have engine damage and radiation leak. Data suggests, but isn’t conclusive, that their drive was nuclear powered. If something went wrong with that they would have significant issues with radiation and possible nuclear material.”
- Dagen, CE“Then we might need to get there faster than possible.”
OOC: Just to remind the bridge … hailing frequencies are open and we are still moving …-GM
Marius cleared his throat. Usually Julien did all the talking he did the fighting. =^=Unidentified Vessels at grid two four point eight eight. This is the USS Genesis, we don’t find many ships out in this area. Nor have we seen many of your type. We would welcome communication… please respond.=^=There was a signal that was very sketchy and full of static. The universal translator was able to give a reasonably good translation: =/\=Who is this? Are you from outside the Pallas system? We have an emergency situation here. If you do not have radiation protection, please refrain from getting too near us. We expect a nuclear explosion at our location in 2 hours. Repeat, please do not approach if you do not have radiation protection.=/\=
He nodded to Operations, “go to warp nine. Check with engineering see if we can get 9.4 for eight hours.”
Marius XO
“Yes sir. Warp nine.” Aevin set the Genesis hurtling through space at a speed he could remember thinking impossible. He sent a text message to engineering. Currently traveling warp 9. Any possibility of 9.4 for 8 hours?
-Ensign Aevin, Helm
OOC: Sorry. Forgot to add that it would be possible and the engineering staff on shift will have to be at full alert during the time.
-GMOOC: Could I get a time curve based on different possible warp factors over 9… the math gets hard and often SIM/GM based.
OOC: Okay … here goes …
Distance 1.5 light years
Warp 9.0 - 8 hrs 40 mins – This is the maximum sustainable velocity for Manhattan class
Warp 9.1 - 8 hrs 20 mins
Warp 9.2 - 8 hrs 01 mins – This is the maximum velocity for Manhattan class : 12 hours
Warp 9.3 - 7 hrs 40 mins
Warp 9.4 - 7 hrs 19 mins
Warp 9.5 - 6 hrs 56 mins – This is the maximum possible velocity for Manhattan class : Emergency at 1 hour
Warp 9.6 - 6 hrs 31 mins
Warp 9.7 - 6 hrs 02 mins
Warp 9.8 - 5 hrs 22 mins
Warp 9.9 - 4 hrs 20 minsIC: =^=We are ready and willing to attempt rescue operations when we are in range, but we are unlikely to arrive in under two hours… Please identify yourself and your crew complement.=^=
=/\= I am Rear Admiral Clogtho of the Global Pallas Space Corps. I am commander of the ship Merry. We are evacuating the damaged ship Magni. Together we are 120 strong. I believe there is a misunderstanding here. We do not need rescuing. My ship is rescuing the crew of the Magni. We will be at a safe distance in 20 minutes and will begin de-radiation procedures after the explosion.=/\=
Just because a ship was having an overload it didn’t always mean the couldn’t go to warp. =^=Can you engage your warp drive?=^=
=/\= I believe that is how we are going to get to a safe distance in 20 minutes.=/\= replied Clogtho.
=^=My Apologies Admiral. We detected a vessel in distress and thought you required assistance. After you resolve your situation… we would welcome further communication and establishment of relations. Our ETA is under 12 hours. My Captain will address you when we get closer.=^=
XO
Marishka worked to clean up the comm signals. She had learned a few interesting tricks and could, hopefully, get it done.
Marishka, CIO
The Intel officer was able to clean up the static due to the nuclear radiation emanating from the damaged ship.
-GM
‘Global Pallas Space Corps’ David mused to himself. It sounded vaguely familiar. He pulled up anything in the main database that matched either the Space Corps or either of the ships in question.
-David Michaels, CSO
The database did not come up with anything regarding the ships but the technology was rather dated. The term “Space Corps” used in 14 colonies’ local law enforcement agencies, despite Starfleet being available to help them.
“I confirm warp 9.4,” Dagen called out. This would be a good test to ‘clean out the pipes’ so to speak, like hitting the highway on an old ground based vehicle. “Sirs, we do have metaphasic shielding that would protect us from instances here like this. We can get in a lot closer than they could if need be.” Still it did seem their arrival would be late. In the meantime they could learn a lot about these Pallas people.
“Warp 9 should be sufficient. I doubt they need us, but just in case we shouldn’t dawdle.”
If they didn’t need help, or should he say, want help, then they were essentially observing an emergency evacuation prior to a first contact. It would be interesting to know ‘how’ they were evacuating. Did they have transporters? Were they limited to shuttle style transportation? Would ‘their’ shields prevent the aliens’ style of technology from beaming through it? “Setting sensors to actively take in what information we can on them,” he announced. Yes that could be countermanded to err on the side of nicety.
- Dagen, EngFrom the sensor information, it would seem that the aliens did not have transporter technology.
- GM
Marishka began scanning other channels for anything else of interest.
Marishka, CIO
“Do we have anything on this space force and the race attached to it.” Marius turned to face Michaels. “We’ll need a report for the captain, when he call us as I’m sure he can feel us going to warp 9” Marius smirked to himself. He wondered if it would take 2 or 3 seconds for the call to arrive.
Marius
OOC: Reminder: We are in uncharted space.
OOC: Uncharted for the current timeline, but possibly not for David who is from the future. Anything he might know from his time with DTI?
-GM
They were still quite a while out. 7 hours at this speed. They could have their detonation 5 hours before they might arrive. They could do their evacuation, retreat and have tea before they got close enough to be of any help. Dagen relaxed and brought up the display for the engine output and strain. Next to that he displayed the baseline output/strain figures to compare it to as they traveled.
Beside that window he kept the two ships on screen and logged any data that the sensors might come up with. It didn’t look as though they had transporters. But his interest was more in the line of the radiation output of the ships’ engines - both the damaged one and the intact vessel. If anything went wrong they may yet be needed and more data was better data. He was sure that in other parts of the ship the sensors were taking in the area of space and other bits. That was their wheelhouse. This was his.
- Dagen, CE
David let out a sigh. Just like Marius to want him to pull something out of thin air.
“Nothing directly matching the ships specifically, other than their dated technology and no transporters. There are several references in the database of a space corps, but so far nothing to directly to these ships or any race or people.”
-David Michaels, CSO
