The men traveled down a long turbo going what could be assumed hundreds of feet below the surface. The doors opened into a room that resembled a command center except instead of metal walls, the space was drilled out of rock that resembled granite. Chairs and consoles dotted three of the four walls in the space. Along one wall however, was a large viewscreen. It ran from the floor to the ceiling in a huge pane of glass. Looking out the window one could see a vast cavern made of the same granite-like substance. While it was easy to look out the viewscreen, the view was slightly hazy from the shielding covering the space. In the cavern, one could see slight distortions if they knew what to look for. The distortions were not noticeable to any probably without a security or military background. They would most closely resemble camo netting over weapons placements, foxholes, vehicles, and supplies.
GM Kate
Magnus half jogged after the General to keep up “Huh” He said as he looked through the cavern, it was a sight he hadn’t seen in over twenty years. “Auxiliary command outpost” He mused “I’m assuming that from here there are multiple avenues of escape,” He said looking at the vehicles. It was clever to have a second command station under and away from the main installation, made strategic sense.
XO
Thomas tried not to shudder. Call him a pessimist, but he didn’t like being underground facing a ravenous hoard that lived underground. Seemed like playing on the home field of the enemy, which was almost as bad an idea as going up against a Sicilian when death is on the line.
“I think it’s more likely the upstairs was the auxiliary, and this is the main staging area for a strike on the subterranean lair of the Volians,” Thomas said.
COS
Magnus considered “I agree with this being the main staging area but don’t you think it makes more sense to have the command post above ground?” He asked conversationally, he was genuinely asking for the man’s opinion.
XO
“You are correct about it being a staging area. You are wrong about the command post top side. How are we to fight an underground enemy when we can’t see what they do below our feet?” Lago had no reason to hold back any truth or information. “We have fought the Volian’s for as long as we could remember. We are not taking the fight to them. This whole area is protected by our shielding. The Volian’s come here from time to time but their underground network is vast. The scientists were playing with the shield weapons we were developing. It awoke the Volian’s before their cycle but that does not mean we can not use a mistake to our advantage. Since we can not attack, we will try a rescue mission. Not all those that come into contact with the Volian’s die immediately. We will try to save them tonight. Do you want to come or stay here behind the safety of the shielding?”
Lago
Bump
GM KateThomas was of two minds. “STAY SAFE” was what almost every fiber of his being was screaming at him, except for the small part that had volunteered for Advanced Tactical Training as a senior at the Academy, and insisted he remained proficient despite going into Investigations, and then Security.
He decided to leave the decision to the XO. “Sir?” he asked, turning to Magnus.
COS
Magnus took a moment to consider, If he had anyone else with him the answer might have been an easy stay safe choice but with him and the security chief here that was over half of the most experienced officers they had dirtside and they had no practical knowledge or information on how to deal with this situation. He took a moment to look at Thomas and gauge his reaction and read nothing from his expression and that nothing told him everything he needed to know Magnus smiled widely “Well I’ve never been hung up on safety, we’ll come with”
XO
Thomas nodded, though inwardly he was grimacing. ‘I knew he was going to say that, damn it.’
Shoving that unhelpful thought aside, Thomas cast a critical eye over the Beltrans’ setup in the subterranean lair, looking for the equipment they would use for their incursion into the Volians’… hives? dens?
COS
Magnus nodded and turned to the General and waited for directions on where to go.
XO
The General handed out several Beltran weapons and shielding devices to his people and the Starfleet officers. It was the first practical application they could see with the shielding. When the Beltran soldiers slipped on the shielding they blended almost seamlessly with the background. Movements gave away the position if you were looking for it but if they stood still, it was hard to see them even if you knew where to look.
Thomas copied their movements and noticed himself disappear. Less a personal cloak than a personal chameleon circuit, he reckoned, then wondered just how bad the Volian senses of hearing and smell were, to not be able to hunt Beltrans they couldn’t see, but should still be able to hear and smell.
Magnus did some tests on the movements including adjusting his aim on the rifle, he hoped he’d get a chance to try out this new rifle before heading out, he didn’t want to be surprised by any oddities, he once fired an alien energy weapon that had significant recoil which ended up breaking his nose, he truly disliked having his nose broken.
Moving to a small elevator in the wall, the men were transported down to the floor of the large cavern. The General looked at the Federation officers. “We had a report that one of our shuttles went down. It was carrying some of your people. I do not know who and we can not contract anyone however, I am willing to travel to that destination after we secure the science station. I am not a monster. We are not deplorable people. Our system worked for centuries but many of us want change. Will you help us?”
General Lago
GM KateWell, now it was a rescue mission. That was certainly something he could get on board with.
A coup was something of a different story.
COS
Magnus nodded to the General “That would be most appreciated General” His first instinct was to head out directly to rescue his people but he had no practical experience with the horde, no communications with the Genesis and no logistical support without the army. He did a quick assessment of the numbers and ran a few simulations in his mind on overtaking one of their shuttles through force and he didn’t like his odds, with the Captain and a dozen of McGregor’s best and their own weapons maybe but using unfamiliar gear in their home turf was to their disadvantage, he’d reconsider once they were topside. He didn’t directly answer the general’s request for help since he wasn’t entirely sure what to make of the man.
XO
The teams split into several groups so that each group could ride in one of the four jeep like military vehicles. The tunnels they were traveling down were wide enough for a two by two formation. After about a ten minute ride, the Federation officers, if they had tricorders on them, would start to get long range readings of energy signatures that were Federation. They all seemed to be grouped together but it was unclear if they were moving or held together in a cluster.
GM Kate
“If this is that Security Liaison that met us at the landing platform, I might let the Volians have him,” Thomas said to Magnus.
COS
Magnus gave the security chief a grim smile “Now, now, Commander. We save them first then decide if they annoy us enough to toss them overboard” He still used naval terms despite them being in a ground vehicle.
