That piqued Riley’s curiosity. He knew Dagen Thor as a competent colleague and as a man who’d suffered significant loss. The fact that he shared the latter with Valleea could draw them close. Whether it would be to their mutual benefit or detriment he wasn’t sure. Dagen Thor’s own loss had nearly cost him his career, and yet it hadn’t. Perhaps he could show Valleea a way forward.
.
.”I’m happy to hear it. Have you two set a time to reconnect?”Dekker, CNS
She shook her head. “No, not yet. I thought I’d wait until I had at least an initial report back from my contact, but then there was the promotions party and I thought maybe I’d at least told him I had hired Orr. But the party was… too much. Either it was overwhelming or everyone else I knew was too busy.” Her whole body was tense with the memory of it and she had to force herself to breath. “I couldn’t… stay. I think if I had I probably would have just sat in a corner and consumed bottles of liquor pretending to have a good time, but I still would have felt like I was having an out of body experience and I don’t think it would have ended well.” The whole thing made her feel sad and pathetic and leaving had been probably the smartest self-defence mechanism she had used in awhile.

Riley took a sip of his iced tea. A part of him wished she’d felt comfortable coming up to him at the party, joining the small group he’d spent the evening with, but he didn’t say this. It wasn’t that a patient couldn’t be his friend, but that they couldn’t confuse the two roles.
“What did you do after you left the party?”
Dekker, CNS
Valleea all but avoided the dark eyes of his gaze. “I went to bed,” she said quietly. “I had to work the next morning anyway, so I got some sleep. I woke up early, so I went in early and got a jump on some supply work that needed doing.”
Ensign Valleea, Doctor
It made sense. Valleea used work as an escape. In the extreme that could be harmful, but what she described here wasn’t extreme.
“The party was large. All the people talking over each other, social groups changing fluidly, it’s not surprising it was overwhelming. Are there others aboard besides Thor with whom you’ve connected socially?”
Dekker, CNS
Valleea fidgeted with her fingers slightly before reaching for another bite of her food. The act of eating at least allowed her to conceal the slight flush on her cheeks. It was a weird reaction and she didn’t fully understand why it was happening, especially since nothing between her and Niniane had been anything but simply friendly.
Swallowing, she shrugged. “I’ve made friends with one of the scientists. Ninane Fahr? She’s been around since the whole drama of the previous Genesis and she’s been very kind to me. But I think she’s being transferred or something, so.... yeah.”
Ensign Valleea, Doctor
It happened. Starship crews were constantly changing, especially among the lower ranks of officers who often found routes to promotion through transfers.
“I’m sorry to hear that. I do know her and she will be missed. A good friend of mine is leaving the Genesis as well. We can’t replace them, and things will seem emptier, but we have to move forward. Tell me, how did you and Ens. Fahr meet?”
