Kylie nodded. “I can understand that. Im use to feeding a crew of 15 then 10 or so more kids… you see… I kind of had little choice myself. I grew up on an Antares Class Freighter. Well shes old, but still flies like a champ so some of her subsystems don’t exactly function the best. The replicators were the worst. The protien resequencing was just aweful… inorganic materials? No problems whatsoever. But Biological matter?” Kylie paused to gives a small chuckle and flick her head to the side with a small amount of rushed air pushed against her teeth to make a tch sound. “Well… it wasnt that bad. The biological matter could be resequenced normally when it was made raw… but asking for anything cooked, either you’d get it raw anyway or you’d get charcoal. So we adapted and made a makeshift kitchen on the ship. Just to satisfy our needs.”

“For fun, I tend to hang out in the lounge.”

“I see, fancy a stiff drink?” She asks raising an eyebrow.

“Is there any other kind,” she let out a chuckle. “So what scares you about this posting?”

“There is actually so long as you’re not drinking to forget something.” Kylie said giving a chuckle, then she sighed. “I think the thing that I may be most afraid of ahead of like perhaps mortality… is that I’m afraid of failure… of disappointing captain and crew… The thing is. I understand that failure is how we grow, failure is how we more often than not innovate. I get it… but it doesn’t make it any less scary to me. I want to do good, and do well for everyone.” She explained a little rushed, it seems she wasn’t that use to being open with anyone.

“Don’t think of it as a failure. Think of it as learning to do it bigger and badder the next time,” Vanessa stated. “Also no one is perfect. So why do you find it scary? Worried about the old man dressing you down?”

Kylie did a motion with her head, kind of like a figure eight motion. “Yes and no. I enjoy what I do, and I have really enjoyed my time in starfleet. I would hate to be 86ed so quickly… it would ruin my carreer… not that I plan on doing this forever… I just…” She sighed heavily. “I just want to be good at what I do.”
Ensign Kylie Brecker, Engineer

“Why would anyone 86 you? You know the Captain’s name is Calvin and not Barabaossa,” she let out a small laugh. “Marius is tough as nails, often laconic, will kick your ass from here to the end of the galaxy if you fork up but is also the most dedicated, loyal, and supportive commander I have ever served under. He pushes you because he can see strengths in you that you don’t even know you have. He is the one person you want on your side and is always behind you picking you up, dusting you off, and helping you get back on your feet when you flounder.”

Taking a sip of her coffee, Vanessa decided to probe a bit deeper. “Tell me why he would 86 your?” She paused and waited for Kylie’s response.

Kylie chewed on her cheek for a moment before she answered. “I have heard rumor that he is tough and rough… maybe it’s others trying to haze the newbie… or maybe there is some truth to it… people talk whether it’s true or not.” She paused a moment and let out a breath. “Have you ever tried to do something to help, tried your hardest to assist in solving something only for the help that you tried to put out not only backfire, but to backfire in such a spectacularly bad way that it leaves you wondering why you tried at all? Well that has happened to me.. more than once… experience taught me lessons that I would be afraid to repeat.”

“Like what,” Vanessa asked settling back in her seat. Ninety percent of being a counselor was listening and not talking. Kylie had a story she wanted to share. Vanessa wanted to hear it and understand the woman better so that the precious ten percent of advice she would give would actually mean something to the young Ensign.

Kylie shook her head. “I really would rather not talk about it councilor.” She said her voice going soft very quickly.

Leaning forward in her chair, Vanessa wrapped her hands around her coffee cup and looked Kylie in the eyes. “That is entirely up to you and your choice. You have not been ordered into my office and even if you were, you are not a puppet. I can’t make you talk. If and when you want to talk about anything I am here but I am not going to force you or ask pointed questions. You said the topic is off the table so it’s off.” Grabbing a PaDD on the edge of her desk, Vanessa opened up Kylie’s file. Signing her name to Kylie’s transfer papers, Vanessa then slid it across the desk to Kylie so she could see and have no doubts as to what Vanessa just did. The orders had Vanessa’s stamp of approval and completed the intake form with Ensign Brecker passing.

“So we have about ten minutes left before my next client. Wanna pick a new topic or sneak out ten minutes early?” Vanessa’s therapy style was different than most. A lot of therapists wanted to push or pry to get to the heart of whatever matter needed to be discussed. Vanessa took more of a laid-back approach. If and when Kylie wanted to talk, her door would always be open.
