A lot was suddenly shifting and she had promised to keep Ryley in the loop. She had meant to tell him at the party, but there were too many people and her anxiety had gotten the best of her. As soon as she had been able to extricate herself from the conversations, she had slipped out of the lounge and into the quiet relief of the corridors.

But days later, she knew that she needed to work through all the things that were changing. So with some determination she sent a message.

To: Dr. Dekker, Ryley
From: Dr. Valleea

Greetings counsellor,

Being mindful of our agreement to keep you in the loop with how I was doing, I wanted to set up an appointment for us to talk. Some things have definitely happened and it’a all a bit overwhelming when I start to think about it. I have a busy and rotating schedule the next ten days but the next three are actually not too bad and I can make some time if you are free. Just let me know.

~Valleea

She eyed the message and then sent it without trying to read and read it for perfection. After all, it was just an appointment message.

Ensign Vallea, Doctor

It was early the next morning when a reply found it’s way to Valleea. It simply said, “Come to my office at lunch.”

Dekker, CNS

Today was a split shift and she had been on duty since 0600 hours, so his suggestion for a lunchtime meeting suited her just fine. In uniform, minus her lab coat which she had left at her computer terminal in Sickbay, Valleea strolled through the corridors, arriving at the counsellor’s office shortly after 1200 hours. She pressed the chime and steadied her nerves. Nothing bad had happened but when she stepped back and looked at it all, she could feel the anxiety start to build.

Ensign Vallea, Doctor

Riley had always found sharing meals to be a bonding experience, and hoped the relaxed setting would lessen the anxiety that came as a matter of course with Valleea’s condition. He’d laid out a small spread on the coffee table that stood between his couch and two wing-backed chairs. A medium-sized bowl contained a spinach salad tossed with cucumbers, tomatoes and red onion. Two smaller bowls sat to the side. One had crumbled bacon, the other hard-boiled eggs. He couldn’t recall if Valleea was a vegetarian and thought it best to keep the animal product to the side. A small pitcher of creamy dill dressing and glasses of iced tea completed the fair.

At the sound of the chime Riley went to the door and pressed the latch release.

“Hello, Valleea,” he greeted her, pivoting his body so as it was perpendicular to the door frame. “Please come in. How have you been?”

Dekker, CNS
