She had of course, noticed the hesitation, but it didn’t keep Ashlyn off the turbolift so it wasn’t an issue… for now at least. Sienna watched the young person as they explained their question. So they knew it was an inappropriate thing to ask and yet asked anyway. It was concerning that Ashlyn only thought about how bad it was in the context of the after… when they had realized they would not know what to do about it if Sienna had answered. They did not consider the fact that it was inappropriate to have asked it in the first place. This showed a lack of self awareness, a lack of understanding of the structure of the world around them and probably a need for it to be corrected. How much of a lack was there? Sienna did not know.

“I will be honest with you Ensign. I do not know what concerns me more… the fact that you were comfortable saying something knowingly inappropriate upon first meeting someone, or that you were comfortable saying something knowingly inappropriate to a person who is of higher rank and is meant to evaluate your capability of serving. I wonder if it really was to throw me off kilter, or if you are throwing out flirtation with everyone in order to see what sticks?”

The door opened and she walked the few steps to the holodeck door. It opened automatically and she stepped inside. “Please key up whichever program you feel most comfortable in.”

Now Ashlyn was really hesitant to say anything out of fear of saying something else she would regret today. She was more than ready to distract herself with some Parkour, but would the Counselor also find this to be inappropriate? No, this was just exercise and sure it was exciting for Ashlyn but it was different, she just had to show the counselor that. Stepping over to the console, the young ensign pulled a necklace out from under her uniform that contained a single isolinear chip that housed the first generation of the parkour program Ashlyn enjoyed. “Computer, load Trenton Park Alpha Test.” The computer beeps its acknowledgment before running the program.

Avoidance. Hmmm. Sienna watched as Ashlyn avoided her question, focusing instead on the Trenton Park load. She had to wonder at the reasoning for the lack of answer. Was it because they were embarrased? Perhaps they did not know the answer themselves? Or maybe they did not really want to answer for fear the answer was worse than the impression given by the original remark. Sienna would be interested to see how Ashlyn fared in their other evaluations and interactions.

First, the room goes completely dark, then a burst of neon light as bright blue traces out a circle that follows down a long obsidian road. At the end of this road that seems to expand into forever, a massive city lights up to provide ambient light to the area. There is a minimalist cyberpunk design to the whole look as more areas off to the side of the road light up to reveal ‘play’ areas at different skill levels. “The program is simple, I can lead in instruction or the computer can for the first five levels. After that, it’s expected that you know what you are doing enough to handle the higher levels. Anything beyond level eight includes adversarial computer opponents in an elaborate game of tag. In the last three settings, those adversaries have ranged weapons so you have to plan and time your movements better. I’ve not reached those last levels yet, still working on moving objects as valid platforms to jump onto or off of.”

A section of floor lifts to reveal changing rooms and a selection of ‘runner’ outfits that matched the theme of the program. Dark colors with neon light patterns to decorate the surface. “I enjoy the theme, so I usually wear this stuff because it breathes well and allows full range of motion. True it won’t protect me from a fire or chemical spill like the uniform can, but the uniform can’t move as these can.” The Ensign moves to get changed into the outfit that was provided by the program. “I hope you don’t mind, but I’m not going to be holding still much here. This place encourages motion.”

Was the flirtation a coping mechanism for general nervousness, a reaction to attraction, a desire to test the relational waters, to achieve the stated goal of unbalancing her, achieve another hidden goal, or simply to toy with the Counselor? Did she do this with everyone or just people of higher rank, or was it situational? Sienna contemplated this as she listened to Ashyln explain their program and as she changed in the changing room. IT was a very interesting program and though she wasn’t here to get hot and sweaty, she needed to keep up with Ashlyn as the evaluation continued in an unorthodox place. Her goal was to keep Ashlyn comfortable enough to be honest and maybe let her mouth run easily.

Siennadye was never one to be uncomfortable in her own skin, so the outfit was nothing to her. She stepped out, the neon purple light patterns fun and interesting. “Well, I hope you do not expect me to be great at this. I am more of an academic than I am athletic. Don’t get me wrong, I can do just fine and then some on my Star Fleet health and athletic tests, just I don’t do much more than that.” It was obvious by now that Sienna wasn’t going to make Ashlyn answer her question and was moving past it.

Nox, CNS

Ashlyn had a plan of some kind, she needed a distraction as much as she needed to move and burn off the unnecessary energy she had. The program she called up in the playfield wasn’t one of the usual training ones like she normally pulls for Sharah, this one was a tower of bars and rods in various directions and heights topped with a single six-foot by six-foot platform at the top. The bars themselves were two inches in diameter connected by large T or cross-sections that could provide footholds while climbing. As Ashlyn approaches, the bars lit up in a variety of neon colors representing difficulty. Green was more common while red was the least common and would require some creative jumping to be able to reach the top. Ashlyn apparently planned to take it easy for the Counsellor as she grabbed the green bar, the other lights went out for a moment before the entire structure lit up with green neon light. “Easiest setting, won’t require much more effort than a usual ladder climb. You’ll forgive me if I put a bit more effort into it though.”

Ashlyn steps onto the structure and starts a slow climb first up the side for about ten feet, then into the structure where there are fewer bars to climb up. Here she balances on her hands to wait for the Counsellor to catch up, folding her legs to look like she’s sitting in a lotus position while remaining inverted on her hands. This wasn’t satisfying enough, but she wasn’t here to cut loose, she was here to have a psychological evaluation. Sure it wasn’t going in a direction she liked, but that was no reason to not do it, in fact, it was the correct reason to. The best way to help her work out her flaws was to first acknowledge they were there. So why does she flirt to unbalance others? Sure it is a defense mechanism, but one that is clearly going to be too much trouble to continue. Does this mean she should stop? No, if she stops then she wouldn’t find a relationship at all. While it may not be the main focus, it certainly was something she wanted and you can’t find others without trying. Maybe instead she should just flirt with those that she is interested in? That might hurt the dynamic of the relationship with Sharah though as a portion of it is based on the joking flirts they toss at each other. It does bother Rainns when she does it though, but then again, that’s the primary reason she keeps doing it because it bothers Rainns and it’s all in good fun. Maybe it’s just the leadership structure that doesn’t appreciate jokes like that, it would make sense. So she should just watch it with the flirting with anyone that outran- Ashlyn’s thoughts are interrupted by stiffness in her arms, they were getting tired and she needed to shift positions, where was the counselor?

The counselor was watching. She had started a climb and then noticed Trenton’s deep thought. Instead of interrupting them, Sienna stayed where she was, allowing their thoughts to progress until they were at a stopping point. Obviously, now they were. “So, where did you go just now? Would you like to talk about it?”

Ashlyn carefully lowered herself to the bar so she could sit on it, still a bit elevated from the counselor which made her feel safer. “I’m in session with the Conference, trying to piece together exact reasons why I flirt. Sadly we can’t come to a consensus on a single reason, but a collection of them. We agree that I flirt for fun, attention, self-preservation, seeking out partners, and social interaction. We decided that flirting is in fact harmless as long as we tailor it appropriately for a given situation. For example, the teasing between myself and my best friend is alright because she is accepting of it and we both know and acknowledge that nothing will ever come of it. Flirting with random passers-by is okay to seek out courtship because honestly how else would I find someone? The main thing to be aware of is when someone says no or asks me to stop flirting with them. For example, Lieutenant Mika, she let me know that my flirting made her uncomfortable and so I stopped. I don’t flirt with her anymore because she doesn’t like it. Same story with you, not going to flirt with you anymore because you clearly don’t like it. I also have to be mindful that it doesn’t interrupt my ability to perform my duties which to date it has not. I know better than to flirt while on duty.”

Ashlyn wraps her legs around a few bars and lays back so she can hang upside down to be face to face with the counselor. “I think there is only two people that I flirt around to be malicious. One is Lieutenant Rainns, don’t get me wrong, he’s a good officer, but when he found me flirting with his girlfriend it didn’t matter how well I performed in my duties I was always in the wrong. Now he begrudgingly asks me to look out for his girlfriend because he knows I care about her. The other one is Ensign Voskt, she was a study partner in the academy who agreed to date me so she could keep me away from her friends. When I found out I arranged a meet with her friends where I was flirting with everyone. Turned out to be a lot of fun but Voskt thought it was disgusting. After graduation, we don’t talk unless we have to for our duties. Thankfully she isn’t here, I think she’s on the Chimera. A simple rule I’ve set for myself once I found out I could feel this way for people was that I wouldn’t let others dictate how I feel it. If I’m going to feel deeply devoted love for twenty people, then I’m going to feel deeply devoted love for twenty people, not one of them is going to convince me to only love one.”

Ashlyn watched for the counselor’s expressions then let out a sigh, “This is all stuff I should talk to my best friend about, it’s not appropriate to talk to you about it since your focus is on my fitness to perform my duties.” Ashlyn released her legs from the bars to drop down to being an equal level with the counselor. With a deep controlled breath, she puts on a very practiced mask of neutrality. “I can assure you that my personal attributes have little to no impact on my ability to perform my duties. My greatest failing is a lack of raw physical strength, my greatest asset is my ability to analyze and deduce. Frequently I will prioritize the well being of the ship and her crew over my own as long as I know I can help others by pushing through. My skills with a phaser are moderate but I support them with critical thinking and being fast on my feet. The Conference is what I call my mind space where the majority of my critical thinking takes place and I use it to the best of my current knowledge, If you know other more practiced super creatives I would also like a chance to work with them. I’m sure my mental capabilities would vastly improve with proper guidance.”
