Sharah held back a grin, “Two actually.” She’d had Joseph in mind when she designed them. She missed him and had thought he would enjoy the idea of being in plane sight and no one noticing. She typed into her own PaDD and they showed up on Marsh’s. “They are not as sneaky as I would like. It’s possible someone might stumble on them, but they would have to be Very lucky.” This design had really pushed Sharah’s skills for design and botany. She was very proud of it and if Marsh approved she was going to show Oliver her work.En. Fayth, Doctor
“MMmmmHmmm,” Marsh pursed his lips. “Keeping secret for yourself and your buddies?” He then looked down… “Oh, the keys to the castle, little old me gets the secret make out points.”
“Well Ensign you can’t make magic happen in a rectangle. You can only do so much so I wouldn’t be so hard on yourself.” He looked down again examining things closely. “Isn’t the risk of stumbling upon half the fun. Why would you take your partner to a public site to perform romantic acts if the thought of being caught wasn’t somewhere in your mind.”
“Its good Ensign, I’ll run it by the Captain but I can approve it on my own authority.”
Marsh
Sharah would never be caught in one of those nooks, unless she was tending the plants. She smiled slightly. She was eager to get started, but if she had to wait for the Captain’s okay she would. This was a side project she was really eager to see finished. “I’ve given the new design a month, to get ready, if I have to work alone. And we have all the materials and plants already on hand. I can start whenever you’d like, Sir.”
En. Fayth, Doctor“I’m sure there will be plenty of people who would volunteer to help you.” He shrugged. “If not, it is an operating system of the ship. I can assign a team. Science, primarily botany, is responsible for the area. Ensign Mayweather and specialist Carson have degrees in that field so…” He left the rest unsaid.
Marsh
Fayth nodded, on a good ship lots of people helped in the arboretum. “I can certainly post a schedule or list of ‘to dos’ for those that want to volunteer to help. I am more than happy to have Mayweather and Carson’s help. It would cut the time back at least 2 weeks.”
En Fayth, Doctor“Hmm,” he thought about it. “I’d like to keep the plant placement and design things under your direct supervision. If you are going to do the ‘to do’ list it should just be the grunt work. I wouldn’t want someone messing up the design with a misunderstanding or some over ambitious ideas.”
Sharah nodded, that’s what she was hoping for, do be able to over see the project, but she also knew she was young and had never undertaken a project like this on her own. She had saved Challenger’s arboretum, but there wasn’t anyone in charge down there and no one had cared what happened to it. But the design on Challenger was nothing like this would be. “The tasks on the to-do list would be very specific and not actually involving the placement of the design.”
“What are going to do with the greenery that you are removing and replacing?”
Marsh
“Some of it, very little, is not salvageable, so it will be put to enrich the soil. The others will be potted and can be taken by the crew for their personal quarters or placed in recreational areas of the ship if anyone is interested. Some of the plants maybe too old and can be saved for their seeds. There is actually very little that has to be removed. It maybe moved to a new location, but will just be replanted.”
En. Fayth, DoctorMarsh made a face… to be reduced to fertilizer after a long career… as a plant.. but a long duty nonetheless has some impact on him existentially. “I guess one day we will all be reduced to our elements to enrich the next generation… Its better than going into the replicators and being broken down to our component elements.”
“You ever think about when you are closer to the end of your career than the beginning doctor?”
Marsh
Sharah stopped herself from asking if he’d recently spoken to a Lt. Rainns. Their future, had been the topic of many discussions the weeks leading up to her reassignment on Europa. “Quite a bit actually. Maybe more than I should. Why do you ask, Sir?” What had she told Joseph? It’s okay to make plans for the future as long as you aren’t trying to live it before it happens.
En. Fayth, Doctor
Marsh shrugged, “It just was a thought when I thought about the remodeling and dissembling of something that gave so many people pleasure without too much of a thought about the past. Each of us will have the moment where we have to measure our lives against the impact we will have on the universe.” He stopped the looked at her.
“What will you leave behind doctor?”
Marsh
“If I’m lucky, a way to help save lives. I’ve been working on a way to help away teams identify chemical compounds that can be used in basic medications for when they are separated from medical assistance. Not just basic injury first aid, but infection, shock, and pain management. Hopefully it will increase chances of survival.” And if Sharah was very lucky, one day she might find a solution for herself and those like her that were oversensitive, but that research had hit a dead end at the moment.
“And you Lt.?”
En Fayth, Doctor
“Even if your research doesn’t work out you will still be a doctor in star-fleet.”
Marsh mussed, “That must be nice,” he started. “You almost define you legacy by each and every life you save. Which may be a lot since your job is a Federation doctor.” He looked about.
“Might not be quite so easy for the rest of us. Scientists don’t get that opportunity that often and officers often measure themselves by the crew members they don’t bring home.”
CSO
Sharah nodded, “That’s very true. The last 20-30 years has been hard on the Federation. I have a friend whose a botanist serving on the Atlantis. Was a star wing pilot. He made an impact. He prefers his plants to anything else he’s ever done.” He certainly made an impact on my life, she thought to herself. “You never know when a small thing can make a huge impact later on. It may not seem like it, but it does in the end.” Sharah stopped talking. She wasn’t sure if the CSO really wanted to know what she thought about the topic.
En. Fayth, DoctorOOC: Funny you picked the ship I GM for. Accident?
OOC: Oliver and Sharah have a LONG history (I’m Revna btw)
“The Atlantis,” He paused. “Are you okay. Last report the Atlantis was missing in action.” Losing a star-ship was both common and surprising at the same time. The upside was that star-ship returned from lost far more often than what would be expected, conversely even that still meant they were lost, permanently, more than half the time.
Marsh
Sharah’s face turned dead white. It could be weeks, months between when she would have the chance to talk to Oliver. She hadn’t heard Atlantis was missing. “I didn’t know.” That explained why he hadn’t messaged her about graduation. She swallowed hard and took a deep breath. “He told me great things about her and her crew the last time I heard from him. I’m sure they will find their way to being not lost.”
En. Fayth, Doctor“You don’t get on the Atlantis by being average.” Marsh made a face, some paid more attention to the Star-Fleet profile list than others or perhaps this was information that wasn’t disseminated below commander rank. In either case it was not the way someone should have been notified. “I’m sorry Ensign. But take heart, being out of contact isn’t a death sentence… Star-ships are notorious for being missing for weeks and popping back up.”
Marsh
Sharah stood up a little straighter and put it out of her mind. Nothing she could do about it now. “Of course, Lt. Space is too vast to make assumptions. Thank you for informing though.” She would have found out eventually, she supposed. She’d only been on board a few days and hadn’t seen the need to check the reports. Something she would make sure to do more often from now on. Not being good with social conventions of conversation due to the noise in her head, Sharah returned to her work, “Can I answer any other questions for you, Lt.?”
En Fayth, Doctor“Good enough, Carry on Ensign.” Marsh gave her a slight nod which was as close as Star-Fleet came to salutes… that and standing at attention. They loved doing that.
Marsh
Sharah nodded, “Thank you Lt.” Sharah stepped out of Marsh’s office and headed for the arboretum. She knew who she was going to send a message to first thing, but she was going to go get started now. Working in the flower beds would help, and calm her mind, and she loved it.
