It had been a crazy day. Sharah got back to their quarters just before Ashlyn did. A mysterious pod, security risks, contamination risks. And they would be back at it tomorrow. Something that kept popping into Ashlyn’s thoughts was a peanut butter sandwich. Sharah knew Ashlyn preferred ration bars, but if that girl didn’t stop thinking about peanut butter sandwiches, Sharah was going to start craving them. She hit the shower and was done by the time Ashlyn arrived back. Sharah was dressed in fuzzy pajama pants and a t-shirt covered in cartoon cupcakes on it. “Hey after your shower, I’ve got food.” She went over to the replicator and got the sandwich for Ashlyn and grilled cheese for herself. Sharah sat down and smiled seeing she had a message from Joseph waiting for her. It had been almost a week since she had heard from him. She’d started to worry, but now here was his message, so everything was fine.
Ashlyn took a moment to collect herself when she walked in, then made a catcall at her Betazoid friend. “Fuzzy pants and cupcakes, could I ask for anything more?” The conference all groan in unison at her terrible flirtation, her own snorting laugh revealing it to be a job. “I’ll be in and out in a moment. I’d suggest Parkour first, but engineering is still making upgrades to the holodeck so we can run Trenton Park. I didn’t realize the program had gotten so big!” She wanders into the sonic shower with a playful wave.
Sharah laughed. She’d gotten used to Ashlyn’s flirtatious behavior. She shook her head at her friend. It was nice that they got to be roommates. They both were accepting of each others differences and difficulties and at least here, on down time, didn’t have to hide who and what they were. “We’ll get to Parkour soon.”
It was several days late before Joseph responded to the last message. His face was solemn when he did. “My days were going well, until two days ago, an Ensign was found murdered in the First officer’s hot tub, so I’ve been conducting an investigation.” He rubbed his face with his hands. “I thought it would be exciting, instead it’s just been depressing and stressful.” His eyes were slightly red, indicating he had been in an emotional state recently. “I miss you so much right now. It’s so hard to find the bright spots in life right now. There is a killer on my ship and every day I don’t catch him I jeopardize the lives of every member of this crew.” He took a deep breath. “I hope you can find peace in your life right now sweetheart, it ain’t happening on my end right now.” He rubbed his face again, a frown permeating it. “Just please keep waiting for me, I’ll make it back to you one day, I just need to get through this nightmare first.” He exhaled deeply. “You are the only thing keeping me together right now, even though I can’t be with you. I need you right now more than ever, just get back to me as soon as you can. I love you imzadi.”
Sharah stared at the Star Fleet symbol now showing on her screen, processing what Joseph had just said, slowly. What had happened? Who was it? Were they all okay?
Sharah’s reply is almost immediate. Sharah looks concerned. “I just got off duty Jospeh, darling, I want you to be safe. Or as safe as you can be. Then I want you to remember that your instincts are incredibly refined. I want you to listen to them. Most importantly I want you to remember I will always wait for you. No matter what. No matter how long it takes. Remember when I was sick. Everyone thought it was me or some person attacking me, but it was a parasite. Sometimes you have to change what you consider a symptom or a cause. At first, remember you thought my meditation change was the cause but it was a symptom. I love you. I am worried about this situation, but I know you can figure it out. Stay as safe as you can. I am always here. No matter what.
I miss you, Imzadi.
Love,
SharahSharah heard the shower turn off indicating Ashlyn was done. “ASHLYN! Get in here!” When Ashlyn appeared, Sharah was turned in her seat, looking horrified. “There’s been a murder on Challenger.”
Lt. Fayth, DoctorHearing her name called with such urgency, Ashlyn dove into the room with a small phaser in hand. Hitting the ground and rolling behind a tube, she aimed the small phase device scanning for the intruder only to see none. Considering the urgency, there wasn’t a lot of time to make herself decent and clearly didn’t expect there to not be an emergency. “You know…if you really wanted to see me you only had to ask.” When she finished her statement about the murder, Ashlyn gave her a fairly blank expression for a long moment. “Okay, so seeing as how we’re not under attack or being intruded upon, can I have my garments from the bathroom? Then we can talk about this murder.”
Despite the seriousness of the news Sharah would have spit out her drink if she had been drinking anything. “Oh Ashlyn, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.” God Ashlyn had good reflexes. Joseph could probably use her help about now.
Once decent, Ashlyn stretched herself out and sat on top of one of the tubes near Sharah. “So, someone lost their minds and killed someone on the Challenger.” Ashlyn seemed to be expressing this as a matter of fact. “How is Rainns holding up? Have they suspended operations or found a suspect yet?”

Security, USS EuropaSharah passed the food and drinks up to Ashlyn. Then she bounds up a couple of storage boxes to sit on top of a fake jeffries tube. “I don’t know. Joseph only said that some young En was murdered in the XO’s hot tub. I just can’t see Harkness doing that. And I saw he got promoted to CO as we were leaving. So it’s someone new.” Sharah thought about it. “He looked horrible, to be honest. He said it happened 2 days ago. He looks like he hasn’t slept. Two days and no leads yet. And ALL NEW cadets.” Sharah shakes her head. “It must be a nightmare. We have so many friends still back there.” Maybe not friends but people they had worked closely with, and Sharah being Sharah she was worried about all of them.
En Fayth, Doctor
Ashlyn looked at the sandwich curiously for a long moment, plying the bread apart to see the inside and sniffing at it. The conference seemed confused and locked on the single phrase of ‘peanut butter sandwich’, echoing it over and over again. Distracted by her thoughts, Ashlyn closed the sandwich and took a slow bite of it. Her eyes grow wide and she looks overwhelmed with sensation. “This is amazing!” Ashlyn was so lost in the sandwich, she seemed to have lost the conversation that was going on. That is until the one that usually calls for the Peanut Butter sandwich gets the attention of the rest. ‘Oi! Murder! Challenger! Friend!’ Ashlyn stops after eating most of the sandwich and puts it down. “Sorry about that, I know you care deeply for him, but there isn’t anything we can do for him from here. We can offer words of encouragement, advice, and cheer him on, but that’s about it honestly.”

Security, USS EuropaSharah grins at Ashlyn’s response to the sandwich. She was glad that Ashlyn liked it. She started eating her own grilled cheese. It was still hot so the cheese was still melty. She was just about done when Ashlyn started talking again. Sharah tilted her head to the side slightly with an absolutely “DUH” look on her face. “I know that. What if it was Mika? I mean I have no idea. He didn’t say and really he can’t tell us anything. I just hope everyone back on Challenger is safe.” Sharah takes a sip of her drink. “On to other things. Like you say, there is nothing we can do to help Challenger.” Admittedly Sharah was worried about Joseph, but she was sure he would be okay, but how many people could get hurt before everything was taken care of.
Ashlyn placed her hands on Sharah’s shoulders, “Hey hey, none of that. Look, just tell him based on my analysis of everyone I knew on that ship, none of them are capable of murder. They don’t have the instinct for it. So his suspect pool should be limited to anyone new.” Ashlyn may not have the same level of care for Rainns, but the last thing she wanted was for her friend to worry.
“I tell you what, today in auxiliary sickbay was something else. I really like working with Dr. Zarath. He really knows a lot. How are you doing with the CSO? I haven’t met her before today,” Sharah asks.
En Fayth, Doctor
Ashlyn blushes and picks up a pillow to cover her face so she could scream into it. “Good gods and goddesses, a beautiful Valkarie that stood before me and I can’t have her.” Ashlyn dropped the pillow to lift her arms to shake her fists angrily at nothing in particular. “Starfleet Reg-u-lations!” Ashlyn dropped her hands in a mock defeated gesture and deflates a bit. “If only she turned out to also be poly, I’d totally just…” Ashlyn made some grabbing gestures before shaking her head, “Do some really creative things with her. You probably don’t want to hear about it.” This, unfortunately, didn’t stop the conference from describing everything in great detail. Enough to make even the saintliest of chaplains blush in embarrassment. Ashlyn can be really creative when motivated, she looked up and watched Sharah’s expression. “Oh come on, I know it’s not the first time you’ve heard that. I’m sure you’ve even heard it when I thought the same things about you.”
