He took her hand and shook it firmly. “They were exceptionally well motivated,” he observed. “This was originally a search we were not going to be assigned to at all, before the two of them managed to look a little more closely at things.” He himself had called in a favor at Fleet Command to get Europa assigned to this search as well, though actually finding the TAM would probably do a lot to pay that favor off just on its own.
“Everything alright so far with your rescue?” he asked.

“I just followed Cassidy’s… Lieutenant Abrams lead. Even though she’s in security now, she knows more about science than the average bear.”
Norene gave half a nod. “For the most part. The crew is all board the three ships, and we’re lucky as many people survived that did. The most seriously injured were brought here while the rest were split between the Fermi and the Brahe. We split the department heads between the other two ships so that they can look ofter those there, and I’ll keep an eye on the small group here. I’ll need to contact my team in a bit, but right now we’re just waiting for an update on a couple critical cases that have just gone into surgery.” She said it so effortlessly, but then again, Commander Abrams hadn’t made it to the role of XO without being able to set personal things aside.
Captain Dvorak nodded in acknowledgement, admiring the woman’s professionalism. He’d seen a few people crack a bit after something like this, and that was without any personal element involved.
Cassidy, however, wasn’t buying the matter-of-fact demeanour of her mother, and almost looked amused, though sobered up quickly to address Dvorak. “Captain Massey is apparently in a coma with a massive head injury. They’re doing their best,” she said softly. “The other case is my father,” Cass said softly, but a slight resolved lift of her chin. “We’re just killing time at this point. But permission to assign some VIP quarters, Captain,” she said, gesturing with her head to Norene.”

“Of course, Lieutenant.”
Cassidy simply gave a nod of acknowledgement back.
As she was doing that, he returned his attention to Commander Abrams. “So… what actually happened that lead to all of this?”

A weary look appeared on Norene’s face. “Sometimes I’m not even sure,” she said before taking a deep breath.
“We had been doing some scan for Cartography after some upgrades before we were supposed to go into deep space. They detected a large plasma storm A ship came out of nowhere. Not easily identified. They attacked, striking key systems in order to cripple us. We managed a few good shots back before they damaged a nacelle and we lost the ability to use warp and subspace comms. Then they took off,” she said shaking her head.
“They attacked and ran before doing anything else?” Tactically that made little sense, presuming there was a value to attacking a star-ship in open space, why retreat before receiving the benefit of such a risky maneuver.
The Commander nodded. “Trust me, we were as taken aback as you are.”
Abrams continued. “We were hoping to get repairs done before they returned but Engineering then told us we needed to be dockside to repair the nacelle but they could cobble things together enough to get us out of there. Our friends returned before we could finish repairs, took out shields, impulse and warp, and most of life support. At that point we had no choice but to abandon ship because they came overpowered and ready for a fight. They weren’t taking prisoners and aiming to kill. No one ever spoke to us,” she said, her jaw gritting slightly and her eyes flashing momentarily with anger. “Captain Massey was then injured and I made to order to abandon ship. that damn planet was the closest with an even remotely breathable atmosphere, but the radiation obviously was going to be a problem. We didn’t get very long on the surface before our replicators started malfunctioning. Comms were a no-go.
“I was giving us another few days, at most before we started losing more people. As it was, we left a lot of people behind on the ship,” Norene said, her voice heavy but her shoulders still set back.
“The search and rescue fleet said they were going to do recovery. I would imagine that will have happened by now,” Cassidy said sombrely. Her parents had been on the ship for years and through them felt like she knew a lot of the crew. Hell, she had spoken to some of them here and there. They were like a part of her extended family in a weird way. It was all so strange. But she couldn’t focus on that right now. Right before her was someone she loved who was still alive and they were both hoping and praying that Adir survived too.

Vora kept a respectful distance but was watching her best friend interact with her mother. She knew that Cass’ relationship had been complicated with her mother, but it had always been essentially good. It was nice to see the strong bonds there and she knew they would need each other if Cass’ father didn’t make it through.

Counter to his reputation Marsh could be responsible. He leaned into his sensors and tracked any possible disturbances that a ship could use to close to a combat range. When confirming the scans were clear he lifted his head. “The gain wasn’t worth the risk, and the loss.” Although the Federation valued lives fairly highly in comparison to most races they had encountered.

“Depends on what they hoped to gain. They weren’t raiding the ship for supplies or anything. At best it was a scare tactic, but given the mixed tech on the ship, we have been leaning towards some way of making a statement. What that is exactly, we don’t know. But I’m not sure anyone else wants to find out, either,” Norene said tiredly.
“Command, I’m sure, is all over it after we transmitted the info we found from the TAM. But it does present a problem in the region,” Cassidy mused.
On Marsh’ scans, everything came back clear. No one seemed to be hanging about that they could tell.

“If they could take the Tian,” He left the rest unsaid. The Europa was a tough little explorer, but she was primarily an explorer not a combat ship nor did she pretend to be. Not like the old Galaxies that were explorers with enough firepower to take on battleships.
“Although, I wouldn’t be opposed to a little payback. A ship like that probably would need a base nearby, can’t just stop at a star-base or a Federation world to repair, refuel, and rearm after taking on a Starship.”
“Scans are clear, perhaps Commander we have enough time for a little meal.”
