USS Europa

Reporting for Duty

Once he’d seen the Doc and the CNS, Franklin had taken the time to go see the Quartermaster and get his cabin assignment. He’d taken a quick shower and stowed his belongings before grabbing his tool kit and heading to Main Engineering.

He stepped out of the Turbo-lift on Deck five and wound his way through the corridors until he came to Main Engineering. Here, he paused for a moment to take things in. You could learn a lot about your job by getting a sense of what your coworkers were like… Jim gave himself a short tour of the Engineering section, relying on his knowledge of prior work on vessels of the class. Once he’d poked around to his own ends, he made his way to the Chief’s office and rang the chime.

Jim was a working man at heart… He felt best with a tool in his hands, and the sooner he got down to brass tacks, the better he’d feel about being aboard the Europa. He hadn’t bothered to read the files on his superiors, but he hoped whoever it was would be a kindred spirit. Someone who loved the job for what it was. Saw it for what it was. What he saw in this meeting would tell him a lot. Usually, he disdained officers. They very rarely had the fire in them for real engineering work. Most of the time, they didn’t even know the ins and outs of their own warp core, let alone have the knowledge or foresight to get to really know the systems. It would either be the Chief’s ship, or his ship. That was usually the way it went. The Chief of a ship either knew what they were doing, or they did whatever they did and Franklin ended up really running things.

If he was honest, he was fine either way… but he was at least interested to see which case the Europa would be.

-Franklin, Engineer.
