“Well, we still could,” he offered. “I mean, I don’t know that my parents actually need to be there. When we do it. They kind of understand that I work in space, you know. But I at least have to tell the, both who you are first, and it would be good for them to meet you and everything.”

“Hmmm, okay. Options,” Vora said with a nod. “I think a lot will depend on how Jerrin reacts. If he doesn’t have en entire meltdown, it could be doable. And I think Deacon would be really glad to be there. And then we could always do a bigger sort of celebration later, right?”

“Sure, if you want to,” he said. He wasn’t big on the idea of something big.

“I don’t know, honestly,” Vora said. “I’m mostly tempted to keep it all quiet because it feels like tempting fate to announce my happiness too loudly. But that’s ridiculous, right?”

The lift stopped suddenly, and the doors parted to reveal someone had been waiting.

“Observation 2,” the newcomer told the computer. The lift resumed. “Was something wrong with the elevator?” he asked them.

“We just finished having sex in it,” Johann offered helpfully.

“Wh- what?”

The lift stopped again, this time on the level that would lead to Europa’s docking port.

Vora’s mouth dropped open slightly as she stared at Johann as they side stepped around the equally shocked officer.

“Bye bye!” Johann said as they walked off of the turbolift. He started leading them down the corridor.

“Johann!” she said, trying to contain her laughter, but only barely managing.

“That was very wrong, you know,” he said to her, referring to his behavior in the turbolift. “But I think I don’t really care. Usually I’m very concerned about propriety. It’s kind of interesting not to be.”

She laughed some more and slipped her arm through his. “Well, as someone who lived a life full of impropriety, I can tell you that it can be quite interesting. I just don’t recommend letting things get too interesting. There’s a line that I’m not sure you want to cross.”

“I’ll take your word on that as an expert on the topic.”

“Smart move, Dvorak,” she said with a wink.

They walked a bit farther.

“We’ll have to tell Avik, also,” Johann observed. “I mean, everyone who didn’t already figure it out is going to know, but we should tell her first. I’m sure there’s some procedural thing she might have to do here.”

Vora tried really hard not to frown, but she managed at least not to make too much of a face. Of course he had to do so. It made sense. “There’s a form that has to be filled out to formally state the relationship. Though I don’t think it has to be specifically her. You could do it yourself. Just so long as one of the command officers files it,” she summarized from her memory.
