Avik was walking down the hallway when she received the CO’s message. She was already heading to the CO’s office, mostly to ensure he got the report request she sent about a month ago. Her eyes scanned her notes. They ranged from department reports to personal notes over senior staff. As she approached the doors, her sharp ears caught the soft hiss and her head tilted up.

“Yes, sir. I was actually wondering if you had forgotten. I sent it well over a month ago,” Avik’s words were frank.

It seemed she had predicted his next action, but in reality, it was a good guess.

Johann just blinked for a second, surprised that Avik had appeared in his office right at that instant.

“That’s weird, it’s only appeared here not that long ago…” He spun the desktop viewer around so Avik could see the contents of his inbox. “Unless you sent it again because you thought I might not have read it.” Which was actually a pretty good guess.

“Anyway, have a seat and let’s do this. Is there anyone in particular you think we should start with?”

“I suspected you might not address the report until I approached you about it,” Avik stated.

“Fair,” he admitted.

She hadn’t much faith in his efficiency, even with her short time spent under his service. When he mentioned for her to have a seat, the XO immediately took one to face him. Her right leg moved over her left as she held her PADD in her lap.

“We should start with the easier ones first, then move on to the more… difficult ones,” Avik pointed out then added.

“The new Chief of Security comes to mind as a good start.”

“Yes, she’s gilded into that role rather nicely, hasn’t she? Range did a very good job grooming her for it.” He seemed to ponder Abrams for a moment before continuing.

“Have we seen her actually tested at Tactical yet? I know most of her other skills are pretty sharp, and I know she’s been on the Bridge, but I can’t think of a time when we’d see how she’d do at tactical.”

“On the paperwork and daily security running, she has adapted well. For most promoted officers this part isn’t difficult, only tedious. It’s what happens when things become unstable and the pressure of their job builds.” Avik’s matter of facts came to the surface with each uttered word. Her tone held a logical and business air to it as she continued.

She looked down to her PADD and pulled up a few notes she made earlier in the day.

“She hasn’t as far as I’m aware. That needs correcting sooner than later. I have one idea.”

As Avik shifted her notes to the say, she continued to elaborate.

“Abrams will be aware we are going to run a simulation during one holodeck training session, but that is it. No additional information over the purpose, when, or what program is.”

Avik, though not voiced, wanted to see CoS Abrams in the state best suited for the test. An accident rarely had any warning and surprise was an element of the job. It was often what caused most officers to fail as department heads, herself included once.

“If you feel the traditional way is better or have other ideas, please voice them,” Avik finished, waiting for his thoughts.

“No, I’m totally in favor of throwing surprise tests at people to see how they do, as long as the test is one that we can reasonably expect someone to pass.”

Dvorak pondered this for a moment or two. First Vora, now Abrams. Though Abrams hasn’t had a problem yet… A question occured to him, but he very deliberately decided not to ask it here and now.

“Were you thinking it would just be her? Battle type scenario on the Bridge? We did a few of those a while back. We’d better be sure it’s not one we’ve used lately. That one with the Bird of Prey should definitely be left out. Plus it’s too easy when someone sharp is at Science and knows it’s a test.”

Avik paused. She thought her statement made it obvious, but she refrained from pointing it out. Her focus moved to the questions.

“No, I didn’t. Tradition requires we summon Abrams and select some officers to enact the test with her. I find that disjointed from real-life events. A combat event doesn’t ‘summon’ someone, it happens and you react,” Avik explained.

Her point made on hard logic as she continued.

“Not all the security officers are going to be there and it’s easy to cut off communications.” Avik knew they trained in groups, not as a whole.

“We could plot a ‘mutiny’ and lock them in the holodeck. Let them figure out how to get out before the ship has fallen to the enemy.”

Feeling Dvorak might worry about distrust among the crew, she addressed it.

“Of course, the mutiny is fake and not actually happening. Thus no one is actually doing any wrong.”

She let the CO examine the idea.
