She nodded, understanding the concept. “You know, humans on Earth have a saying, ‘Home is where the heart is’. I always found that to be mostly true.” She turned and began pulling out things from the pantry cabinet. “If you don’t have something you love, something or someone that makes you feel at ease, or a place that is special to you, it is hard to feel like you have a home.”

She paused with her hand on a long thin loaf of bread. There was a brief bit of sadness in her eyes but it soon passed. “I no longer have my home, so I am trying to make one here, on the Europa, but you have an advantage I don’t.” Sienna said matter of factly as she turned and continued pulling out ingredients, inviting him to ask the obvious question of what that might be.

“Oh? And what’s that?” he said dryly, moving over closer to see what she was pulling out. It was starting to be kind of useful to have his mother’s eidetic memory, so he was curious if he could figure out what they might be making.

She grinned and turned back, pulling out ricotta cheese, beef, onions, garlic, parsley, mozzarella, an egg, pomodoro fresco sauce, and pasta shells she had made the night before. Sienna added these ingredients to the appetizer ingredients of tomatoes, basil, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. “You have your mother.”

She continued now onto utensils and cutting boards, setting one in front of him with a knife meant for slicing as well as tomatoes. “It is hard for her to come into your life so late I imagine. Hard for you both. She wants to feel connected to you and maybe you to her, but lost time does damage that bond born upon birth. You might feel the weight of expectation, knowing she wants this but also knowing that you can only give it if and when you are ready to. However,” She said picking up her own knife and tomato. “It wouldn’t take a smart kid like you much time to know she has your back in a way you never thought you would have.”

“So, what you want to do is dice the tomato. Slice it up into slices about a centimeter thick and then chop those slices into 1 cm square bits. Put them into that bowl.” She directed, waving her knife in the general direction of the stainless steel bowl she had set out. “Am I somewhat close? Or am I missing the mark.”
