(snip)

When Jerrin walked into the holodeck, he was walking into a living room. The inside was a lovely, warm and inviting home. It was obviously lived in and well loved. The couches had dents from long use. There were pictures of family and friends though curiously, they were blurry and only outlines of happy people could be seen. No faces visible. Paintings were on the walls, medals decorating shelves beside vases full of small flowers. A vast open and arched doorway led to the cool toned kitchen. Muted shades of greys and blacks with splashes of bright and vivid aqua and pastel purple. This was the kitchen of a cook. Everything looked fully stocked and organized. Various kitchen tools and machines lined countertops. A basin sink sat in the middle with a window above looking out at the San Francisco Bay nearby. A massive island sat in the middle with a secondary sink.

Jerrin took a few steps into the space and then stopped, looking around slightly wide-eyed. This was not what he was expecting.

Sienna stood where the kitchen ended and the dining space began, looking out at the Bay. She was relaxed but lost in thought, dressed in a simple and comfortable tunic and leggings. Her feet were bare and her hair was up out of her face in a ponytail. She didn’t look anything like she did on duty. Star Fleet Headquarters sat in the distance, a monument to her life and dedication. Impeding the view ever so slightly, was a massive garden that rolled downhill to a small pool and deck. The deck itself housed another eating area.

It had been so long since Sienna had allowed herself to brave seeing her home again. She almost didn’t recreate it due to fear of the memories it would bring, but fear was rarely a motivator for her. Eventually, she conceded that seeing home would be cathartic and Jerrin had given her a reason to face this particular demon. She had spent most of the day here, taking in the details of her life and letting the emotions be felt as they came. Then, with an hour before Jerrin was to come, she showered, changed and set up the security setting that fuzzied the pictures she loved so much and erased the names on the medals. When she heard him approach, she turned, blinking away her deep thoughts and smiling warmly.

“Excellent. Right on time! Welcome to my home.”

He stepped in further, finding himself looking over his shoulders at all the different things in the space, and of course, the view. “San Francisco, right? On Earth?” he said feeling an odd sensation of being almost envious if this was actually what her home looked like.

She nodded, looking out at the bay for a moment before returning her gaze to the young man. “It isn’t my home in this universe, but in my universe, I was married and lived in San Francisco when I wasn’t assigned to a ship. That was rare, but my husband and I believed in having something that was just ours. Being a Captain, we thought it would be good to be near headquarters for the Federation. It’s a beautiful city.”

“Haven’t been yet. Mom says she’ll take me to Earth at some point, but we’re stationed so far away that it’s a bit difficult most of the time.”

“My family wanted me on Betazed, but I really didn’t want to be that close to them.” Her nose wrinkled a little bit. “They are loving, but meddlesome, as Betazoid parents can often be. Have you ever had a home like this?”

He looked at the colours, sentimental items and landscaping that spoke of many things he couldn’t relate to. “I lived in a house like this once,” he siad idly before looking at Nox again. “But it wasn’t my home. I’ve never had one, until now I guess.”

She nodded, understanding the concept. “You know, humans on Earth have a saying, ‘Home is where the heart is’. I always found that to be mostly true.” She turned and began pulling out things from the pantry cabinet. “If you don’t have something you love, something or someone that makes you feel at ease, or a place that is special to you, it is hard to feel like you have a home.”

She paused with her hand on a long thin loaf of bread. There was a brief bit of sadness in her eyes but it soon passed. “I no longer have my home, so I am trying to make one here, on the Europa, but you have an advantage I don’t.” Sienna said matter of factly as she turned and continued pulling out ingredients, inviting him to ask the obvious question of what that might be.
