Steven didn’t much like dead bodies either and he paused along with Cassidy, but his disdain was more objective. Cassidy’s was more specific. Her family was on the ship and any body could be very personal to her. “I need reading of this section…” He looked at her, “Lieutenant, I know you’re rusty get to scanning.” He nodded in a kinder fashion than his tone. “Go ahead, get me those readings.”

Words failed her and Cassidy found herself simply nodding. She moved off to the side, pulling her tricorder out and scanning the room. She ventured to the open entrance and scanned once again out there. “Oxygen and nitrogen levels combined are at 74.9 percent, carbon dioxide at 16.2. No life signs and I’m reading similar mixed weapons fire residue out in the corridor. Whatever happened didn’t make it inside Sickbay. Maybe they had evacuated here already by then?”

He walked over to the covered body, lifting the sheet slightly. The figure was male, but wasn’t a command officer. “Yellow shirt,” He said loudly. That would be at least somewhat comforting to her.

Cassidy exhaled slowly, feeling slight relief before her stomach churned. It was still a casualty, someone her parents served with. As were the others in the space. Turning back, she came to where Steven stood and looked at the others. She knew a handful of the crew by face and more by name. None of these people looked familiar. It was only partly a relief.

Steven picked up the medical record PaDD, “Illyn Payne, ensign.” He pause for a moment silent. “Thank you for your sacrifice, your watch has now ended.”

Watching, Cass felt a bit numb and while there was relief that it wasn’t someone she knew, it was still someone from her parent’s ship, a colleague, a fellow officer. She offered a quick salute.

Deep down, she didn’t want to go farther on this ship. They already knew all the pods and shuttles had been launched. Whomever was still on the ship was dead and the casualties could be retrieved later. More importantly, in her mind, was tracking down those that escaped. If any survived. “We should go.”

“Fair enough.” Steven would have rather done more searching. Who knew what lay about, but it was just as reasonable to believe they were wasting time here with the dead and the living could be at risk. The dead were getting any deader…

Forcing her feet to move, Abrams came to stand beside the CSO. “Thanks,” she said softly so the comm wouldn’t transmit her words back to the ship. They were for Steven.

A few moments later, the transporter enveloped them and they materialized back in the transporter room. “Should change and head back to the bridge.” She was eager to figure out where the rest of the crew was.
