Vock sipped his tea for a moment and then said “No. I have not. Outside of the non-commonality of physiologies, of course. Medicine, regardless of species, has a central goal: to mend what is broken and create a better and healthier being. The steps to do this are based on logic and science. Even the platitudes and comforts a Doctor must give serve a logical and quantifiable purpose, that being to assist a patient through the healing process.” and he took another sip.

“That they do. So bedside manner has never given you a struggle?”

Vock again paused and thought. “Me, no. But as one would expect I have had patients refer to me as cold and distant. Not many, but I attribute some of that perception to the reputation of Vulcans as emotionless… a perception that our history with other species, especially humans, has done little to discount.” and he sipped his tea. “But the majority of my patients have not complained that there is a lack of empathy or understanding of their emotional states on my part. And many have appreciated me treating them with directness and not… how do the humans say it… oh, yes. Not ‘sugar coating’ the information I am giving them. One can be direct and not blunt or brutal in the process, after all.”

“It seems like you have a good understanding of the needs of patients on more than the physical level. Mental issues can sometimes slow the progress of healing.” She smiled and sipped her own tea for a moment before returning it to her lap. “I too feel that sugar coating is often a detriment to the patient. They need their doctors to be forthright and trustworthy. Not being honest with them is antithesis to that trust.”

“Agreed.” Vock replied.

“This ship is new to you. How do you feel about being social and making connections to the crew here?”

“That is an arena that has never really been a priority for me, I must say. And I find new postings to be somewhat difficult at first, if I am to be completely honest.” Vock said as if he was discussing the weather. “While I am familiar and studied in multi-species social interactions and indeed count a select few as ‘friend’, the endeavor of connecting with new individuals and new colleagues is something that I am not well-versed in. It happens, of course, after some time has passed. But the initial interactions between myself and others has always been somewhat… difficult.”
