Cassidy was on duty, covering the bridge until a more senior officer took over, and while the discussion was remarkably silly, she hadn’t seen a ned to intervene… yet. “Report,” she called out calmly. “What’s on sensors?”

Abrams, COS

“Small object, approximately five meters wide,” NE Hayek reported. “Approximate mass of 260 kilograms. Metallic composition. Electromagnetic spectrum emissions. It’s hard to resolve from this distance.”

“Sounds like a probe,” NE Keynes guessed.

“Could be.”

– ?

“Can the computer match the metallic composition at all? Is it a Federation probe? And what’s its trajectory?” Abrams said, frowning. She doubted it or someone would have said. But before they started doing anything, she wanted to be at least see if they could ID the thing. She preferred to at least have a tiny bit of information before she called anyone else into this.

There were beep-boop-beep noises as the named nameless ensigns kept trying to figure out what it was.

“Sensor readings do not match any space probe or vessel known to the computer,” NE Hayek said. “Closest match seems to be from Earth history. Similarities to old-NASA space probe Pioneer 11. Conventional radio antennas, including one rather large dish. Hydrazine based monopropellant. Radioisotope thermoelectric generators for power.”

“Interesting,” Abrams said, setting her hands on her hips.

“Plotting trajectory,” said NE Keynes. The stars disappeared from the viewscreen, to be replaced by a map of this sector of space. The probe was represented by a small yellow dot. It was very close to the Europa, which was represented by a small blue Starfleet delta. A straight yellow line stretched out from the dot, and started bending slightly as the sensors collected more information about the probe’s position. Eventually it seemed to pass through a star system that was only a few light years from here.

“Possible origin point of Delta Fornacis star system. Last survey was 2365, no known space-fairing civilizations were observed at the time. A few planets, though.”

This was an archival treasure and the scientist in Cass wanted desperately to know what all it had seen. “Put a tractor beam on it,” she ordered before leaning over and hitting the comm. “Captain to the bridge.”

=/\= Acknowledged, =/\= came the immediate reply.

“Uh, we’re out of range, ma’am,” NE Hayek said.
“Should I change course to intercept, ma’am?” NE Keynes asked.

The Captain already arrived on the bridge before she could answer that.

When he arrived, Cass turned and grinned. “I figured a tractor beam was safe and we might want to do an in depth scan to be sure there’s nothing that would damage us if we brought it aboard but what do you say to an archaeological find of the decade?” she said before explaining about the probe.

“Oh? Let’s see it.”
“We’re out of visual range, Captain,” NE Hayek said.

Additional text started displaying on the viewscreen as NE Hayek kept pressing buttons. It was basically the summary of the composition she read off earlier.

“Plot course to intercept, and increase speed to Warp 6.”

“Aye, Captain,” said NE Keynes. A new line grew from the blue delta representing Europa, which intersected with the plotted trajectory of the probe. “Course plotted. Warp 6. 40 minutes to intercept at present speed.”

“Still, that looks really cool,” Johann commented. “I wonder who launched it and what it was intended to do. Earth had a couple of probes kind of like that, and they ended up in interstellar space well after their planned missions were completed.”
