=/\= Coffee, black, 3 teaspoons of sugar =/\=Rujo watched as the drink appeared before him in the replicator tray. Rujo picked up the mug and took a long sip … at least the replicators in main engineering still worked. He went to the console he was working from and put the coffee mug down on it.
“Computer, what’s the date?” Rujo asked.
=/\= It is presently stardate 69879.8. =/\= came the response.
“And how many Engineers are there on board the Constellation?” Rujo asked.
=/\= Computing … do you want me to include civilian and Starfleet engineers in the calculation, or do you just want Starfleet engineers, or just civilian engineers?=/\=
“Give me all three numbers, in that order, firstly, both Starfleet and Civilian engineers, secondly Starfleet engineers only and finally Civilian engineers only.” Rujo replied.
=/\= Working … carry the 1 … I asked my wife, “Do yo wanna goanna?” … divide by 5 … I pick up the ball and I throw it to who? … square root of 125 … this is an ex parrot … 14. Working … your answer, Lieutenant Kiwa is 1, 1, 0. =/\=
“Oh, so you mean that I’m the only Engineer on board the Constellation?” Rujo asked.
=/\= You are correct, Lieutenant Rujo Kiwa. =/\=
“Thank you, computer,” Rujo said, before opening up a list of overdue maintenance requests on the console he was using. As he waited for the list to appear, he sipped his coffee. Finally the list appeared on the screen, along with page 1 of 50 at the bottom.
Hot Tub - Chief of Jello Investigations Quarters
Hot Tub - Chief of Sanitation Quarters
Sonic Shower - Metiminagaibaa’s Quarters
Turbolift 47 connecting Deck 13 through to Deck 18
Transporter Room 3 located on Deck 23 is out of alignment
Vacuum Cleaning Equipment of Sadie requires a greater deal of sucking
Coffee making facilities of Sadie requires filter replacement and alignment
Holosuite 3 on the port of deck 16/17 wasn’t initialising properly
The fuzzy dice over the dashboard of the shuttles, runabouts and workbees in shuttlebays two and three had all mysteriously disappeared and needed replacement as per Starfleet regulation 47.62674B Subsection 41 ‘Fuzzy Dice and their effect on Crew Morale’
Engineering Hull Sickbay - 2nd isolation bay could no longer be isolated
The 2nd EMH on board has a huge ‘H’ on his forehead and called the CMO ‘smeghead’ when she last called him into action. He’s also insisted on being called ‘Ace’ Rimmer.
The work console of the teaching facilities on Deck 15 has been covered by a combination of paint, glue, craft materials, pencil shavings, and the remnants of what appears to be someone’s lunch. Unsurprisingly the console no longer works and needs immediate replacement.
The metaphasic programming for the shielding system needs to be updated to the latest release for the metaphasic shield before use.
The variable gravity system in the gym has gone haywire. The gym has been closed until further notice and needs engineering expertise to attend to the problem.
The CTO’s work station is on an endless playback of the Benny Hill theme song along with scenes from the show.
The CNO notes that his research into nasal cavities of diplomats, politicians and other VIPs has been locked with a passcode he does not know and requires Engineering to sort it out immediately. Some of those items were important than others, and some could be held off until a later time. The most pressing of all the items was obviously the fuzzy dice situation, while items like the metaphasic shielding (just don’t go into a sun), the turbolift not working properly (hey, there were plenty of others on board the ship) the malfunctioning EMH (just use the 2nd one) and the CTO’s workstation (the regular streaking episodes of the CTO were entertaining) were far less pressing. The CNO’s issues with his study notes went straight to the bottom of the pile, while the needs of the cleaning and tea lady didn’t concern Rujo … at least not while he had the replicators to provide him with coffees to keep him going.
Finishing his coffee, Rujo tossed the empty cup to one side of the console and went back to the replicator. It landed on top of the score or so of other empty coffee cups that were already there … if he wasn’t careful, the left over coffee in the cups might mutate into some kind of coffee creature that would take over the ship.
=/\= A large extra strong coffee with three sugars. No milk. =/\= Rujo ordered. Picking up the cup of coffee that appeared, his engineering repair kit and the replacement fluffy dice emergency supplies, he headed for the turbolift that would take him to Deck 30 and the two shuttlebays with the missing fluffy die.
- Lt Rujo Kiwa, Chief (& Sole) Engineer
Deck 30 - Bay 3 - 1 of 2 Runabouts
Rujo shook his head at the scene that greeted him on the bridge of the runabout. Someone had snipped right through the cord that had held the fluffy dice in place, and had taken the fluffy dice. The horror was unthinkable and made the Connie in violation of Starfleet regulation 47.62674B Subsection 41 ‘Fuzzy Dice and their effect on Crew Morale’. Thankfully it had been brought to the Chief (Lone) Engineer’s attention and he immediately went to attend to the issue. Failure to act would result in the comfy chair being fetched and a punishment be administered involving feathers and soft cushions. That was a fate that no one deserved, definitely not while Rujo was on board. He collected the cord that remained, untied it, and placed it in his tool kit alongside the others he had taken from the workerbees and shuttles he had already attended to in bay 2. As he attached the new fluffy dice to its rightful place in the bridge of this runabout, he wondered if he should report this to the XO and CO. He knew they would both be appalled at this alarming state of affairs. In the meantime, he still had one more runabout’s fluffy dice to reattach.
He exited the first of the two runabouts in this bay and entered the second one. He paused and looked … the crime this time was different. The cut wasn’t as clean as the others, and there were some of the remnants of the fluffy dice on the floor. THE MONSTERS! He untied the cord and picked up the remains of the fluffy dice from the ground. Were they looking at a copycat criminal here? Or was it the same person, trying to throw them off the scent? Whatever it was, Rujo would get to the bottom of it. The engineer completed the attachment, and, satisfied it was attached in accordance with the regulation, opened up his padd and crossed another item off his list.
The first of his 50 pages of maintenance repairs had now been updated. Only now it was page 1 of 55 pages. He was losing the war here. No matter, he would drink more coffee … coffee solved everything.
The updated list was as follows:
Hot Tub - Chief of Jello Investigations Quarters
Hot Tub - Chief of Sanitation Quarters
Sonic Shower - Metiminagaibaa’s Quarters
Turbolift 47 connecting Deck 13 through to Deck 18
Transporter Room 3 located on Deck 23 is out of alignment

The garden gnomes in the arboretum on Deck 14 have been smashed. They need replacement in accordance with Starfleet regulation 47.62674B Subsection 42 ‘Garden Gnomes and their effect on Crew Morale’.Rujo was going to go to the main sickbay on board to deal with the apparent reprogrammed EMH, but Starfleet regulation 47.62674B Subsction 42 was just as important to be met as Starfleet regulation 47.62674B Subsection 41, and the consequences of not abiding by it were even more dire … after all, no one expects the Spanish Inquisition, except for those who do expect it.
=/\= Deck 14, =/\= Rujo commanded as he got into the turbolift, stifling a yawn. It seemed he needed a coffee, pronto.
- Lt Rujo Kiwa Chief (Lone) Engineer
The turbo lift accelerated towards deck 14, the computer chimed =/\= Authorized Beverage menu for Lieutenant Rujo Kiwa has been updated =/\=
GM
As long as it means stronger caffeine, that’s ok, thought Rujo, stifling another yawn.
On his way to Deck 14, Rujo tapped his combadge =/\= Lt Kiwa to Lt Shadowflower. Doctor, my apologies. I was on my way to you to fix up your 2nd EMH, however an issue related to Starfleet regulation 47.62674B Subsection 42 has just cropped up. I will be to you as soon as I return the Connie to compliance with that regulation, Doctor. Lt Kiwa out. =/\=
The turbolift ended its journey, and Rujo stumbled out, the buzz had worn off and the Engineer was like to drop. He stumbled on towards the doors to the arboretum and was passed by families and crewmembers coming the other way, sobbing hysterically and with much wailing and gnashing of teeth. It seemed the smashed garden gnomes were having the effect he dreaded and demonstrated the need for Starfleet Regulation 47.62674B Subsection 42.
He resolutely went on, untangling himself from the crewmembers, civilians and animals that reached out to grab hold of him. He bravely went on, fighting both the grasping hands and other limbs as well as the exhaustion that threatened to overwhelm him. He made the doors and opened them. whoever had the vendetta against the garden gnomes had done a good job at it. Bits of gnome were all over the place. Rujo let out a plaintive bestial scream of anguish, a sound that showed his utter despair at the lengths that someone would go to in their vendetta against harmless garden gnomes. Rujo sank to his knees and sobbed, as the full impact of the smashed garden gnomes smashed into him and left him gasping for breath.
Rujo picked up one gnome’s head, a skull and cross bone gnome (or ‘skull and cross gnome’ :D ), and muttered, “Alas, poor Yorick, I knew thee well”, before yawning again. He spotted a replicator just ahead of him, and the engineer stumbled towards it.
=/\= Coffee, black, extra strong, three sugars, =/\= he ordered and waited for the drink to appear.

The Computer made the heartbreaking High then deep low pitch that is made when something is not right. =/\= This menu item is not available to Lieutenant Rujo Kiwa. Based on prior orders it is determined to be unhealthy to consume more than one cup of caffeinated beverage equaling 300 Milligrams of Caffeine per twelve hours. Please make a new selection or wait 11.475 hours =/\=
