Not again… Please, not again.
Kalika had been overseeing the third shift reports before morning shift change when one report stood out like a super nova against the background of a black hole.

The CO was in medical… And not fairing well at last report.

As she passed the shift change to another, she found herself stealing the corridor towards medical. Her past slamming into her with every stride she took.

Her fiance dieing on the last mission on her former ship… Her parents dieing while she was at Academy… The deaths during her childhood of old friends…

As she turned a corner towards the turbo lift, her former lover’s ghost blocked her path. Another death, Kalika… You aren’t fit to protect anyone! It faded in a moment and she continued on to medical.

As she arrived, it was evident from the swift rub of her eyes that she was fighting her emotions. She stepped in and paused. The door swooshed shut behind her as she looked at those in the room and the glimpse of the body on the medical bed she caught between people’s movements.

Lila cocked her head slightly as she noticed Kalika enter as she did the woman seemed close to tears. Lila stood and though she had yet to be released while they tend to the Captain she remained in sickbay for now. Moving to Kalika’s side though she did not know the officer that entered she gave the officer a hug. “The Captain is not dying she will be just fine once she has been given some blood.” Lila told her gently.

Kalika felt the woman’s arms and backed up. “Thank you… but not a good idea.” Her face was a mask of confusion. What would possess the woman to embrace her? She was half Orion. It meant her pheromones could do interesting things to other species. Wasn’t the woman as leery as her other co-crewmen were? She cocked her head a moment as if trying to figure out the woman’s motives. “I came because the Captain was hurt. I want to know what happened.” Her voice probably wasn’t loud enough to be heard by everyone. And the tone was more of that of someone answering a question.

Stein, apparently the ranking doctor, picks up the COs arm and lets it drop with a thud. “Yep. She isn’t dead just very near dead. A little dead, but not gone dead.” He nods once and then looks at Lila, “If that is all it is why hasn’t anyone begun a transfusion?”

Ensign Stein, Medical

Lila blinked as the doctor looked at her, “How would I know why no one has begun a transfusion, I am not a doctor I am a civilian aboard this ship. The workings of the minds of the humans aboard this ship is still quite a mystery to me.”

Remembering the conversation that he had had with the CO in the turbolift brought a sick feeling to Nevin’s stomach. He knew of Ravenfall’s kind and of their… nutritional requirements. He wasn’t one to judge, but no one with an ounce of self-preservation instinct would willingly become some-one’s meal.

“We’re not talking needs blood as in transfusion here, are we?” he asked the travellor tentatively.

Tanis returned to main medical to see what was going on as he noted never seeing the CMO arrive. He kept quiet as he started doing other chores to keep out of the way.

Tanis

Kaylia stood there waiting.

  • Ensign Strenvale (EO)

noticing the ensign standing there doing nothing. “Excuse me ensign (Strenvale) are you in need of something?” Tanis asked softly to the officer.

Tanis

“I have never pryed deeply into the Captain’s eating habits, but she once said to me that there are volunteers that… for want of a better word donate… their blood,” Nevin said, “How has she ended up like this? Did these people stop donating for some reason?”

He looked around thos present aware that not all were medical personnell. He recognised Tanis from their meeting the previous night in 12 Forward. Whilst he knew many of the JO’s names, he wouldn’t recognise them were it not for their name-tags on their uniforms.

“This conversation is, obviousy, not going beyond these walls,” he added.

“No of course not,” Stein agrees as he looks at the CO’s body, “And as far as her… needs well I am new here but certainly we can find an efficient way to fulfill those needs without having to kill anyone. She should only be able to hold five liters so find five people, drug them, drain them, send them back onto shift and bada bing bada boom we are good to go.”

Dr. Stein, Medical

“Aye, sir! All is Secret.” Commenting from his location in sickbay. ~Not like anyone would believe him anyway~ He thought to himself. As he finished his duty at that station. As he went to do other chores. The Chief had everything in hand there. As he moved to the labs to start cleaning them.

Lila continued to watch them as they talked trying to understand what they were doing and why they weren’t doing anything for the CO.

“I’m waiting for her to wake up, because what I did should work, considering my unique phsyiology. ” Holding up her arm and pointing to her wrist where the cut she made to fed Vik blood had already almost healed. “Were none of you paying the least bit attention in the last five minutes?”

Ensign Strenvale (EO)

“No,” Stein answers honestly, “But in my defense I only got here four minutes ago.” He watches the blood drip and shrugs before returning to the vitals and making notes in the chart. “I do hope you are right. First medical case has me wondering what exactly I signed up for.”

Kalika heard what was going on and while most of it made no sense, Strenvale holding up her wrist made everything click. She took a step forward and frowned that no one had noticed the woman giving blood. It also bothered her that ‘she’ hadn’t noticed, either. “If the Ensign hasn’t provided enough, I can give more than a human can. perhaps the first thing good to come from being a ‘half breed’,” the word like a curse on her lips. “I can give a little over two and will only be weak for a few hours.” She hadn’t actually tested that, but she had been hurt worse than human counterparts and faired much better.

It was the Captain… to be honest, she would have lied and claimed she could give all five pints if she thought medical would believe her.

“I see. So you are a giant bag of blood that doesn’t require circulation to effectively transfer oxygen infused blood from the lungs to the brain and extremities to survive? Interesting. I will make note of this for future reference,” he continued in a tone that was hard to discern if he was being serious or merely sardonic.
