Main Sim – Casualty Control (SickBay)

The bosun’s whistle echoed through the ship. [O]Attention all hands to battle stations. Emergency distress call has been received from the USS Declaration. She is under attack by several Klingon Vessels.[C]
[O]Bridge to Medical, prepare for incoming casualties and rescue operations.[C]

Sickbay was finally back under some semblance of control.
The widespread systems failures that swept through the Sentinel had left their mark—not just as damaged equipment, but in the crew as well. Every department was affected, but the science labs down the hall had been among the hardest hit.
Three of the biobeds in the recovery room were filled, two occupied by crewmen recovering from concussions and a third with a young ensign who had their leg reattached. One of the surgical beds held a science officer with extensive burns. Thankfully, they were sedated and stable until the medical staff had the chance to resume working on them.
Sadly, despite the crew’s best efforts, the morgue across the hall held a new occupant who could not be saved.
The examination room had become their triage and primary treatment area. Most of the more seriously injured patients had been treated and returned to their quarters to rest. Now just half a dozen people were waiting to have their lacerations or fractures seen to. The walking wounded.
The medical team finished with a large laceration on a human man’s arm, and the next patient, a Tellarite woman, approached the empty examination bed. She was cradling her elbow as though her shoulder had been dislocated.
Before she could arrive, a voice from the surgical suite called out. “Doctor… the power to the surgical bed is fluctuating again. The patient’s vitals are still stable… for the moment, at least.”
Gamemaster Mal Fet
“Get an engineer in here,” Astrel said in response to the voice. “Assign a nurse to constant watch of the patient, make sure it’s someone versed in manual interventions if needed.” If no one else was available, he would qualify for that. But there were other patients needing triage and treatment.
~ Astrel, Med
The Tellarite crewman in operations red moved forward. She winced as she sat on the biobed Asrel was manning, still holding her arm to minimize the pain from her dislocated shoulder.
“Looks worse than it feels,” she lied unconvincingly.
“Uh-huh.” Malo scanned the shoulder, checking for any damage caused by the dislocation.
“Still… I got off lighter than a lot of others did.” She looked at the doctor, her expression softening. “Are you okay, Doc? Have you been able to take a break since everything began?”
He hadn’t, but he smiled reassuringly anyway. “I’m alright. Let’s focus on you, okay?”
The main hull breach and the fire in the chemical lab had both been on this deck, and not too far away. The proximity made it easier to transport the wounded to Sickbay, but it also struck a little close to home.
Gamemaster Mal Fet
Any situation was worrying, but so close to sickbay, and he worried about something going wrong here - both a threat to himself and the ability to treat all the wounded.
He touched the dislocated joint gently. “Resetting it is going to hurt. Are you ready?”
~ Astrel, Med
“No,” she replied with a furrowed brow. “But do it anyway.”
The Tellarite woman winced during the procedure but managed not to cry out. After receiving aftercare instructions and promising to take it easy, she went on her way.
There were just two patients left in the examination room: one with a broken nose and another with an arm laceration, judging by the way they were holding their bandages. Before he could wave the next patient over—or take a moment to himself—Astrel felt the Sentinel drop out of warp. A few scant seconds later, it shook again, and the lights dimmed ever so briefly.
The announcement had said they’d be warping in to fight Klingons… it looked like they were in the thick of things now.
In that moment Dr Anu strode back into the exam room. A few strands of her auburn hair had escaped her braid but she still looked rather calm and collected.
“Doctor! This surgical bed lost power and is rebooting!” the nurse shouted. “I need help over here.”
Gamemaster Mal Fet
Her piercingly green, kind eyes found Malo’s. “I’ve been down the corridor to check, but I didn’t see any wounded crew members” she announced to him and the other nurses bustling about.
“Dr Astrel, why don’t you take care of our patient with the burns. If that biobed keeps malfunctioning, feel free to move him to the second one.” she smiled at him then and waved down one of the nurses.
“Nurse, help him move the patient.” she ordered. “I think we can expect more tremors and we don’t want to accidentally drop him.” she winked.
Then she turned to the two remaining patients.
To the one with the broken nose she said: “Please see nurse NE Molly over there, she can scan your nose and set it.” and to Nurse NE Molly she said “In the recovery room please, there’s one bed still free and I want to keep the others unoccupied for now.” she had a feeling she would need them soon for more severe treatments than a broken nose.
Then she waved over the patient with the lacerations at the arm and started scanning him to check just how deep they were and how his system was handling the blood loss. She scanned his eyes and responsiveness while she was at it. “What happened to you?” she asked.
While waiting for an answer she ran sickbay’s status in her mind. The four biobeds in recovery were occupied now, one surgical bed held the burn vicitim, the other malfuncitoned. That left only two free biobeds in the room she was standing in now.... way too little!
This was just the beginning… and while she hadn’t found any casualties on her stint down the corridor, she was sure there were more to come… maybe also from the other ships embroiled in the conflict. As far as triage rooms went, this was a joke. Maybe she could use the equipment from the emergency aid stations and set up those gurneys in the gymnasium or the lounge?Dr Dana Anu, CMO
OOC: Hey Lucas, great to meet you :) right into the action I see. I’m looking forward to a proper pre-sim getting to know each other thread. Feel free to start one when you have the time. - Julia
OOC: Updating the thread with the info from the bridge thread with which we’re synced up acc. to the GM :-)
IC:The console beeped with an alert then and Dana asked her patient to wait a sec. The lacerations on his arm weren’t that deep anyhow, he could get fixed up quickly.
She checked it. Her eyes went wide.“Dr Astrel, come back here please.” she called and waited for him to rejoin her. Then she pointed at the message. It displayed coordinates of many, many escape pods that were apparently floating around out there, survivors of fallen ships, stranded in the middle of a multi-ship fight with the Klingons, including the already damaged flagship.
Her eyes found his, with a look of determination. “We need to set up a big… really big triage area, now. We’re in no way prepared for that many incoming. I’ll extend sickbay to the whole deck. I would like to ask you to take command of sickbay and all the serious cases I’ll be sending your way.
From now on, everyone who does not have serious injuries, hit them with a pain killer and they can get fixed up later, send them to rest in their quarters, the biobeds are now only for those in critical condition. I mean the 8 that we have won’t be enough and we can’t operate on a malfunctioning one.” she gave a sigh. “I know you can handle it, and that you have experience with triage yourself, but as far as I know you’ve just went through one not long ago, so let me take this one.” she said and gave him a warm smile. “Get a bite to eat and drink, I have a feeling we won’t get to do that for the next day or so.”
It upset her. She hadn’t even had the chance to get to know him properly, she only knew from his file that he was an extremely capable physician. Well, there would be time to get to know him… later.
She openend a comms channel to the bridge. =^= Sickbay to bridge. Captain, I’m setting up triage in the lounge. Permission to take command of all non-essential personnel with basic med training and requesting the support of operations for the set up. =^=
Dr Anu, CMO
Again Rende pressed the internal comm button. [O]Granted doctor.[C] the comm closed as she turned back to the battle taking place.

Dana nodded, her eyes still holding Malo’s.
“All right. I’ll be down the hall to wrangle Ensigns into moving all the tables and chairs in the lounge to one side and set up pallet beds and guerneys. Will you be all right taking charge of sickbay and the critical cases I’ll send your way?” she asked.
Dr Anu, CMO
The doctors were going to have to make some tough decisions. The Sentinel had eight biobeds: four in Recovery, two surgical beds, and two in the Examination Room.
Only three were currently available.
The four biobeds in the Recovery Room were now full, but they might need them for the casualties that were likely to start arriving. One of the patients was recovering after having a severed leg reattached, two were recovering from concussions, and the last was being treated for a broken nose.
Only one of the surgical biobeds was free; the other was occupied by a patient with severe burns… and it was malfunctioning as well. Dr. Astrel had requested that somebody from Engineering come take a look at it, but nobody had arrived yet.
Both biobeds in the Examination Room were available, but overall, their capacity was limited.
The entire ship shuddered again, a grim reminder of the battle raging outside in space.
Dr. Anu was setting up the accessible portion of the lounge as a triage area, but there were only a limited number of personnel available to help. The ship was at Red Alert, and most people already had assigned duties. Still, he had gathered a half-dozen people with basic medical training to help in the new triage area, along with another half-dozen who could serve as porters and move patients to Sickbay when needed.
The galley and half of the lounge had suffered a breach during the cascading failures the Federation frigate was still recovering from. The sealed bulkheads served as stark evidence of how precarious the Sentinel’s situation was.
OOC: And then there were two! Just in time, at that.
If you want Engineering assistance, I suggest you request it and cross-post with Engineering. There are a few other things happening on the ship right now.
