She gave him a soft smile. “Of course.” Hopefully tomorrow she won’t be such a wreck and could function more professionally. Leah didn’t regret her little breakdown, and she was glad to have found a way to do so, but the circumstances were not ideal. All she knew for certain was that she had a lot of thinking to do.

~Leah Hart, NP

Dovek left and tried twice to engage with crewman but it did not go well, they politely declined but he could feel that they were uncomfortable. That night he spent time listening to deltan music wondering if he should go home, maybe give up his dreams of starfleet. He would start weighing his options. He then sat and mourned Juno privately, she had been his only true friend, and eventual secret lover. Her death had ripped out a part of his soul he was not sure he would ever get back.

After his shift the next day he was his calm, happy, controlled self, everything starfleet commanded him to be. He stepped up to Leah’s door and rang the bell.

She had meant to come in and do some reports before she had to be back in Sickbay. Split-shift days weren’t so bad, but they could end up being a bit more chaotic. Leah had braced her foot on the edge of a chair and had a PADD propped on her thigh, reading.

The next thing she knew there was a sharp sound and then a thud as her PADD hit the floor. Blinking her eyes, she realized she had fallen asleep. Damn it! She dropped her foot to the floor and felt it tingle as circulation returned. Bending for the PADD she picked it up and then rose from her chair, moving to the door. She opened it and stepped aside, knowing exactly who it would be. “Sorry for the delay. Come on in. You know the drill,” she said, trying to mentally shake off the sleepiness.

He looked at her, could feel here fatigue, “I don’t really have anything to report today if you would rather just get some rest?” he said waiting by the door. They had to meet so frequently one day would certainly not kill him, though Command sure seemed to think so. “I would be happy to leave, or we could just go somewhere and chat, get some coffee or something” he noted

Executive Officer, USS Sentinel

The only place to get coffee was the galley, but they could always wander elsewhere. Goodness knows she needed something to perk her up, though the brief nap had felt nice. “I could really use some coffee, and I’m happy for the company,” Leah said, tapping the PADD on her thigh. She got up and gestured to the door.

Dovek smiled, “Coffee it is” he said standing to his feat, and motioning to the door with a smile, truth was he was tired he had not slept well and could use a cup himself. “I might need to drink a double” he noted

She laughed, which felt rather refreshing lately. “Oh, I hear you.”

Stepping out into the corridor and heading. “I have found it rather convenient that Sickbay and my office are so lose to the galley. It’s not such a big deal wit slip out and get something to eat or drink. Given the split shifts I’m doing right now, it’s been rather helpful.”

“You said you didn’t have anything to report. That’s fine. How are you though?”

~Leah Hart, NP

Zaril smiled “I’m doing well, Leah, I have my sad times at night but they are managable” he said, it was mostly true, if currled up on the floor in a ball trying to supress your missery was ok, but he really did not want to talk about it, she was gone and there was little he could do other than grief as best as he could. “And you, how are you holding up under split shifts, Im not much for them” he noted.

For the time being, she was okay with him changing the topic, but she was mindful of the possible need to revisit something he had said. “Umm, I mean, they aren’t my favourite way to do things, but with a couple people out sick and my still needing to do mental health support, split shifts are necessary. It’ll be temporary, and that’s what I tell myself when I’m falling asleep in my office,” she said with a lopsided smirk.

Arriving at the galley, there were a couple people there, but it was otherwise quiet as most people were on watch for Alpha shift. Leah beelined immediately for the carafe of coffee that Chef Gorshin kept going. “Thanks, Gorshin,” she called into the kitchen area, even though she couldn’t see him at the moment. Filling her cup, she stepped to the side so Zaril could grab his and moved over to the nearest free table.

Hands wrapped around her mug, Leah closed her eyes for a moment, focused in the warmth penetrating through her skin. The shifting shift work wasn’t the only reason she was tired and she figured it was just her mind working through events. It would likely be this way for awhile. OPening her eyes, she took a deep sip and all but sighed.

“I mean, I sleep fine when I sleep, it’s been hard since Juno, but I don’t really know what to do about that other than time. I have been reading a lot at night when I can’t sleep.” he noted, trueth was, if he got more than six hours of sleep that was a good night.

“What have you been reading?” she asked. Zaril hadn’t really mentioned before and she was curious where his tastes lay.

~Leah Hart, NP

He smiled armly, “Im reading ** Don Quixote** it’s very interesting, earth literature fascinates me it is very entertaining.” He shifted in his seat a little a sense of calm emanating from him. “Do you read?” he ask. “I prefer to replicated the actual paper it’s more satisfying” he noted.

She sipped her coffee and then nodded. “I do like to read before sleep, though there are a lot of nights I’m just too wiped. Especially lately. I’ve read a variety of different genres, but these days I like mysteries. Not thrillers so much. I like trying to figure out a mystery and see if the author can stump me and my psychiatry training. It’s a joy when they do. I like being surprised most of the time, but it is a difficult accomplishment.”

“What are you enjoying about Don Quixote?”

~Leah Hart, NP

He thought a moment. “Well, its fun lots of action, but what I really like is the author’s ability to convey complex emotions.” he said. “It makes the people come alive for me, I can almost sense them, it’s hard to explain but when I read I understand the emotions at a very deep level so I can almost feel them for real as I read” he looked at her and smiled. “It’s very exciting”

She grinned, loving to see him so exuberant. “I know what you mean. When you get an author that resonates with you and they have that amazing skill to make you feel things, it’s pretty special. I’ve had a few of those books over the years. My father liked to read, and he liked talking about what he was reading. It was one of those bonding moments I always found special.” That and no one else intruded on those moments. Well, mostly.

~Leah Hart, NP

He smiled, “You should try a romance novel read to you by a deltan sometime” he said with a slight lift of his eye brows. “It’s very, immersive” he said laughed.

Leah burst into laughter and it was a good thing she wasn’t holding her coffee mug just then. “I bet it is!” she said, half sighing as she grinned. Leah shook her head. “I think I might have to swear off romance for awhile. It is not in my best interest.” She lifted the mug and sipped, letting the hot liquid settle something in her. She still felt off but she just couldn’t quite pin point what it was.

~Leah Hart, NP

Zaril, “well at least I got a laugh out of you” he said with a grin. “Not sure it would be the best thing for me right now either to be honest, but it is interesting.” he looked at her for a moment. “Are you ok?”

It was one of those moments where if the question had been posed in Sickbay, her answer would have been different. Not because she didn’t trust everyone there, she absolutely did. But she didn’t want everything to be a thing right now. Not after Risa.

Lifting her brown eyes to Zaril, she blinked. “I don’t know. I know I’ve been through something traumatic and I’m just trying to get through each day, but I feel off. I can’t explain how I know or what it is, just that there’s something going on. But of course there is, right? So I’m trying to give myself time and space to work through everything. It’s just hard.” It was easy to just smooth over the feeling and let it pass for now. Later, she could examine it more closely, but she was on duty right now.

~Leah Hart, NP

Zaril put a hand on hers, well maybe come have dinner after you get off duty, I am an excellent cook. The sense of calm and peace it was what he normally projected, but the contact intensified it a little.”no preasure pfcourse he said taking his hand back
