Zaril had been thinking a lot since their last session, he very much liked Heart she was genuine and truly cared. It was refreshing to him. He hoped she would be proud of him, he had sat with Lieutenant Marks, a geologist in the science department. He though the conversation had gone well. He knock on the door that he thought was the same place they met the last time with a rap tap tap.

The door slid open and Leah was there, a warm smile on her face. “Good morning, Zaril.” Stepping back, she winked and gestured for him to enter. “You know the drill.” She didn’t stand on ceremony, especially after a first meeting and establishing everyone’s comfort level.

Inside her little office, the little table had a tray with a pitcher of water and two glasses. “I at least have beverages this time, though I’m regretting not grabbing myself coffee. Oh well, there’s always a break in the Galley later,” she said as she settled into a chair and crossed her legs.

Zaril smiled and looked at her considering her words. “We could just take a walk and go get coffee if you would like?” he noted, not trying to avoid a conversation, but just wanting to spend time with a friend before. “A less intense start to our talk might be just what the doctor ordered” he noted.

Her eyes glittered as a sly smiled slipped upon her face. With a tap of the arms of the chair, she pushed herself to her feet in a fluid motion borne of hours of dance practice. “You know what? I think you’re on to something. Come on, let’s go get coffee and then we ca come back here when we need to.”

“Lead on, Zaril,” she said, wiht a bounce in her step as they left her office.

He walked out of the office and waited for her to slide into step next to him, his emotions were filled with a soft calm that she knew as mainly a control of his emotions to make everyone else around him comfortable. It was likely not his mood, or at least not all of it. “How was your day?” he asked her trying to make some small talk.

“You know what? Pretty good so far. Interesting, but not stressful.” Leah laughed. “Do you know how rare that is? I should definitely note it in my log tonight.”

Making it to the galley, she slipped in and headed right for the large carafe of coffee Gorshan kept fr the crew. She grabbed a cup and made a mental note to grab her tumbler from her quarters. Why she didn’t earlier she didn’t know, but she had been a bit more forgetful lately. Stress did that to a person. Fulling the cup with black coffee, she moved over to a free table, waiting for Zaril. In this simple change in plan, it also allowed her to help him with something else as well- two birds, one stone, and all that.

Zaril smiled warmly at Leah grabbing some water with electrolights, “I sure that i don’t know how rare it is?” he said. “But I am glad you are having a good day, I think you would be proud I made a friend yesterday, I think. A lieutenant from the biology department. We shared a great meal together and talked for a while about earth.” he noted but he could sense she was a little off. “He lowered his voice considerably, Are you sure you are ok?” he asked quietly.

Leah sipped her coffee and it might have appeared that she was ignoring his question. “I’m fine,” she said, brushing away the question with a wave of her hand and mentally focusing on what he just told her. She broke into a smile. “I’m glad you had a good experience.” She winked. “See? We start somewhere. We get no guarantees about how things will go, but we take it day by day, interaction by interaction.”

On the edge of her hearing, she could hear it. The galley wasn’t super busy but there were a few people there. She could all but feel the occasional glance burning a hole into her skin. She understood it, of course she did. She had a doctorate in nursing specializing in mental health. She understood the ways of people. Didn’t mean it didn’t irk her. But she was here with Zaril and this session was about him.

Zaril smiled at her, his eyes creased in agreement, “mmm, one step at a time, one interaction at a time, I can deal with slow” he said taking a long draw on his drink. She did not seem to want to talk about her self, though it was clear there was something a miss. He was about to tell her that mark was going to have him over for poker, which Zaril told him would not be fair for them. He, however, had become suddenly aware of the people in the room and felt like maybe they were watching him. “Now that you have your coffee, would you prefer to walk. ” he asked her his eyes shifting softer smile.

She sipped her coffee and gave a half-shrug. “I’m game to head back to my office if you are. And you can tell me more about this interaction with the biologist you had.”

Rising to her feet, the whispering behind her stopped. Leah turned in that direction, her brown eyes all but glaring at a couple ensigns that she recognized at Rebecca Lynch and Daniel Carrington. They diverted their gazes, embarrassment rolling off them at being caught. “Got something to say?” Leah said, her tone sharp, commanding, anger brewing under the surface.

Carrington looked up sheepishly. “No, ma’am.”

“Lynch?” Leah said, planting a hand on her hip.

Rebecca shook her head.

“Fantastic. Now that we’ve established there’s nothing to talk about, how about you respect my privacy? It might be a surprise, but most people don’t like being the object of gossip.” Her voice had risen in timbre and volume. “And I get that it’s all salacious and shocking, but I’m not interested in having a sharing circle, so everyone can butt out of my business. Feel free to spread the word so I don’t have to give this lecture more than once. Got it? Good!”

Zaril knew how she felt at least in spirit he had often been the subject of gossip. He had never had the courage to confront it in such a mannor.manner.

Leah turned, grabbed her coffee (nearly spilling and muttered, “Come on,” to Zaril before storming towards the door.

Zairl smiled as they walked down the hall, “are you ok?” He asked holding out his hand to her if she wanted to be calmed. It was customary for deltans to share good and bad feelings.

Leah never lost her temper with her crew mates. At least not in that way. Oh, she could vent with the best of them, but she was always utterly professional, unless being confrontational was somehow helpful to her patients.

The loss of control bothered her, but she could not set aside the seething anger. It wasn’t just the gossip, it was.... everything. Zaril couldn’t fix that. What was done was done, even if the fallout was still unravelling slower than a finely knit blanket with a snag. “No, Zaril, I’m not okay. But right now, I’d just like to get back to my office while my coffee is still hot.” There, at least she was being honest.

She didn’t stop walking, nor did she take is hand. In this moment she didn’t want to be comforted, but she understood if that was confusing.

Zaril followed her back into the cozy space and sat down, he looked at her keeping his own feeling neutral. “I hope I did not offend you by offering my hand” he stated. “Deltan’s share our feelings, its the main thing we do. I did not mean to offend. ” he said after the door was closed.
