OOC: This takes place at whatever point the R&R for the crew on Risa takes place, so anyone can join in when and where it makes sense to If you’re not sure if you should, DM or email me.
IC:
“Come on, Leah, don’t make us drag you from here,” Nurse Montri said. Kham cast a glance over at Doctor Sylvia Hunter and med tech, Sol McMahon. “Right?”
“By her toes, if needed,” McMahon said with a grin. He was incredibly tall and could probably manage it too!

Leah sighed. “I’m coming! I swear. I just…” She tapped some keys. “… need to finish…” More tapping. “… this report, and.” Two more taps. “Done!”
“Praise be to all the holy things in the galaxy,” Kham said.
“R&R isn’t official until we are off the ship. Don’t tempt her with anything,” Sylvia said. “Hell, I’m tempted to get Doctor Kreed to bar you from here,” she said, leaning in to Leah and pulling the tricorder out of her hands that somehow found its way there.”
“It’s a sickness. She’s forgotten how to have fun. One random dance party that was too long ago and she’s been sucked back into the vortex.” Sol took her hand and pulled her away from the admin area. “Doctor heal thyself.”

Leah laughed. “Fine. Fine! I concede. But if anyone mentions follow-ups or reports in the next 48-hours, I’m directing them to you and telling them it’s all your fault.”

Montri nodded. “I’m good with that. You two?” she said to Sylvia and Sol. “yep!” they said in unison.

“Onwards to fun, then,” Leah said with a grin as they left Sickbay.

After arriving on the surface at the resort and checking into their rooms, the quartet met up for dinner and then changed to go partying. Arrival at one of the night clubs, the music was loud and energetic and the drinks were strong.

“Shots!” Sylvia said, and dragged Leah to the counter. They returned with a tray and all knocked one back, then two. There was dancing, more drinks, and more dancing. Kham bemoaned the fact that Leah’s Aldebaran upbringing gave her a higher metabolism and thus alcohol not only didn’t affect her too quickly, but her body was very efficient at dissipating the effects.

Much like that night in the gym, Leah let her guard down and let herself be seen. She moved with the precision of someone who had danced all her life and she wasn’t terribly picky about who she danced with, save that they respected her boundaries. Around 0100 hours, Kham tapped Leah on the shoulder as she was dancing very closely with a dark skinned Risian woman named Alaria. “We’re going to go! We’ll see you at breakfast?” Montri shouted over the din. Leah smiled and nodded. “Have fun!” Kham said with a laugh. Leah grinned. Oh, she would!

Noise drew her from her slumber, or unconsciousness. It was debatable which one it was at the moment. Leah sat up with a groan and the room spun. What little she could make out of the space around her was not familiar, and her whole body felt sluggish. There wasn’t that usual buzzing when she drank a lot (which was decidedly rare), and instead she felt strangely out of her body.

Sound elsewhere in the room drew her attention. It sounded like water was running, but she couldn’t hold thoughts in her head for long enough to make sense of anything except that she wasn’t alone. A deep humming sounded from what was likely the bathroom. Male? Something sounded so familiar but her brain just couldn’t quite hold onto the thought for very long.

Leah slipped off the bed and fell to her knees. Something was wrong! Everything was wrong! Her heart was racing and it felt like it might thud out of her chest.

She slipped out of the room a few moments later after somehow finding her dress. Nothing else, mind you, but at least her body was covered. Her feet were bare.

The world around her continued to shift and distort and she moved faster, looking for an exit, even though focusing on objects was hard.

Eventually, fresh air washed over her, and some part of her brain registered she was outside. There was noise. People. It was loud, but everything was more muffled than she wanted. The smell of treated water was prominent and shapes moved around her. Something touched her skin and she spun in that direction. “No, no, no, no,” she said, spinning away and stumbling away from the shadows that were trying to hurt her. More sounds. Voices. Everything was heightened and dampened all at the same time. She felt everything and yet felt like she was floating out of her skin.

A small bit of pain surprised her and then she was falling. Pain. Then nothing.

{*Moments Before}

“It’s okay,” he said, trying to be as soothing as possible to the woman who seemed confused. Drunken party-goers were not unusual at Risa, and now and again someone had a little too much fun and needed help. This woman seemed to fit the description. But she was panicking. “It’s okay. I just want to help you.” She backed away from him, muttering. ” No, wait! Watch out.” She tripped backwards over a lounger and then hit the deck. That would have been bad enough, but she had had momentum and rolled over… right into the pool.

He cursed and moved around the lounger, jumping into the pool after her. His arms found her a few moments later and he pushed off the bottom and brought them to the surface. Others on the pool deck were massing, looking to help. Trails of blood rippled through the water.

Kham, Sylvia and Sol sat at the table at the resort’s restaurant. “I want to applaud her for being late for once, given how extraordinarily punctual she is, but I thought 0900 was more than acceptable for breakfast. That or she’d let us now she wasn’t coming,” Kham said. It was 0920.

“Let’s at least look at the menu and give her a bit longer,” Sol said.

And so they waited another ten minutes, but Kham was anxious. “I’ll go up and check to see if she’s there.”

Kham knocked on the door of Room 316. No answer. She went back downstairs and asked if Leah had checked out (the concierge recognized her as being with Leah yesterday). She hadn’t. After checking back with her friends, Kham decided to check the most likely option: Leah returned to the the ship unexpectedly. Any number of things could have happened to have drawn her back.

Kham stepped to a quiet corner of the lobby and flipped open her [O] Nurse Montri to the Sentinel.[o]

[O]This is the Sentinel. What can we do for you Montri?[o] the voice of the comms officer came through.

[O] By any chance has Lt. Hart returned to the ship?[o] Montri knew it would take a couple minutes to check, but knowing one way or another would give them the answer to question on her mind: where was Leah?

~Leah & Co.

There was a long pause as the comms officer contacted the one person who would know for sure - Yeoman Rand. However she was on leave as well. So it took a bit longer to check. [O]Sentinel to Montri. Lt. Hart has not returned to the ship. Is everything alright?[o]

Cpt. Asam, CO

Well, that was the question, right? [o]Probably. But I need to check on something. I’ll call back and confirm. Montri out. [C]

Blowing out a breath, Kham went back to the table with her friends and they discussed what to do. Minutes later, they were moving to Concierge and not much longer than that, Kham followed one of the concierge up to Leah’s room. They unlocked the door and Kham followed them in. “Ms. Hart? Concierge. Is everything okay?”

No answer. Kham stepped fully into the room that definitely looked like Leah had been in there, based on the items about the place where they wold be entirely expected. But the bed looked pristine except for the end where her friend might have sat on it to put on her heels last night. She hadn’t been here at all last night. Of that, Kham was sure.

Back downstairs, Kham shared the news with Sol and Sylvia before she called the Sentinel again. [O]Montri to Sentinel[o]

[O]Sentinel here. What’s going on Montri?[o]

[o]Lt. Hart was supposed to meet myself and a couple others from Sickbay for breakfast. We’re all staying at the same resort, The Sioway. Leah didn’t show up. She didn’t come back to the ship, and she didn’t check out. Concierge took me up and we did a check, and it looks like she didn’t return to her room last night. We all went out together, but Leah stayed out later. She might have stayed out all night- that’s possible- but there’s no way she wouldn’t have left a message or let one of know she wouldn’t make breakfast. I’m… worried.[o]

~Leah & Co.

[O]Stand by[o] the comm went quiet.

The comm officer pulled up the record of the comm assigned to Lt. Hart and set the frequency. [O]Sentinel to Hart. Come in Lt.[o]

EvilJen, DDoSFEO

There was no answer. It was working, but wherever the communicator was, it was not with Hart, or she wasn’t answering.

~Leah Hart, NP

The captain was sitting on the bridge and was watching. “Science scan to see if you can find Lt Hart’s bio signs.”

EvilJen, DDoSFEO

The ensign at the station nodded. “Yes, Captain. I’m detecting her biosignature. It’s about ten kilometres from Ensign Montri’s location. Hold on, I’m cross-checking with our map.” The ensign tapped a few keys and then frowned. “She seems to be at a public facility.” He looked up at Asam. “It’s the hospital for the region.”

~Leah Hart, NP

The comms reactivated, but it wasn’t the comm officer. [O]Montri this is Captain Asam. We are reading Lt. Hart at the local hospital. I want you all to go and get an update on her and report back. I will send Lt. Kreed down if necessary.[C]

EvilJen, DDoSFEO

[o] Understood, Captain. We’re on our way. Montri out. [C]

Kham and her colleagues made all haste locating the hospital and making their way over. It wasn’t all that far, and concierge helped them find fast transportation. But that’s where things stopped going smoothly. When they inquired at the hospital’s main reception, they got the run around, because of course the name Leah Hart didn’t come up. And they weren’t about to give random patient information to a bunch of people, just because they claimed to know someone.

Kham smiled at the receptionist. “Look, I get it. Privacy is an issue and we absolutely don’t want to get anyone in trouble. But you see, our friend is a Starfleet officer who was on R&R with us at a resort not far from here. Our starship is in orbit and well, they confirmed her biosignature is somewhere here at this hospital, so naturally, we’re concerned. And she probably doesn’t have any ID on her, since her communicator isn’t with her. Are you sure there’s no one we can ask about a possible unidentified patient?” Kham said, giving an encouraging if worried smile.

The receptionist blew out a breath. “I’ll check with our ER department. Normally you’d have to have the local police issue issue a missing persons report and they would be the ones talking to us. But since you say she’s here, I’ll see. what I can find out”

Kham turned back to Sol and Sylvia. “Finally!”
“Nicely done,” Hunter said.
“I just pulled a page from Leah’s book and killed them with kindness. Let’s hope it pays off.”

A few minutes later, they were on the way over to the ER where they apparently had a unidentified woman brought in between 0330 and 0400. Someone from the ER was waiting for them so they didn’t have to join a lineup to talk to anyone. “Our friend’s name is Leah. Long wavy dark brown hair, dark brown eyes, tan skin. She’s short, 165 centimetres tall, about 65 kilos, muscular build. She talks with a light accent. She was raised on Aldebaran but her family is Spanish and originally from Earth, Montri said.

The nurse took them all in, and something shifted in his eyes. “Come on, I think our patient might be your friend. You can identify her if so. She’s up in the ICU.”

“The ICU! What happened?” McMahon said.

“I can’t give details, except to say there was an accident and she required surgery.”

Upstairs, they were led to a room by one of the ICU nurses. Stepping in, the woman lying in the bed made the three of them startle. “Leah!” Kham rushed over and took her in. She turned to the ICU nurse, who was now accompanied by one of the doctors. “This is Lieutenant Leah Hart. What happened to her?” Kham demanded.

A few minutes later, Montri found a quiet place to make the call. [O] Montri to Sentinel.[o]

[o]We’ve found Leah. She’s in their ICU. She was brought in around 0345 hours after hitting her head on a pool deck at the resort next to ours. They won’t tell us much more than that because we’re not family or her superior officers. However, they don’t know we’re med folks and so we’ve been trying to read her readings and chart. Tell Doctor Kreed she’s had a TBI and neurosurgery to fix a cerebral hemorrhage. Vitals are better than before the surgery, but she’s not regained consciousness yet. There were more notations but we didn’t have time to read them. We’re going to need higher ranks down here.[o]

~Leah & Co.

[O]standby Montri.[o] The comms officer relaid the information to Asam. “Tell them to stay at the hospital until relieved.” Well this was a conundeum. Hopefully, Kreed would be enough otherwise Asam was going to risk arrest to go get Hart. Which she would, but of the politics involved.

[O]Captain Asam said to stay at the hospital with Lt. Hart until relieved. Lt Kreed is being sent down.[C]

Rende left the bridge and went down to sickbay. “Lt Kreed, I need to speak to you. We have a medical emergency.” She waited for him to join her. “Lt. Hart has been injured on shore leave. She is in the Risian hospital ICU and unconscious. She was brought in around 0345 hours after hitting her head on a pool deck at the resort. Nurse Montri said to tell you she’s had a TBI and neurosurgery to fix a cerebral hemorrhage. Vitals are better than before the surgery, but she’s not regained consciousness yet. They won’t release any other information except to her superior officers. I want you to go down there.”

Cpt. Asam, CO

Kreed was at his desk finishing a report when the Captain came in. Vertical and horizontal eyelids linked in rapid succession has Kreed listened intently to Asam describing the situation. When she finished, the Saurian simply made a Humph sound and looked down at his terminal. Taloned digits crashed into the keys in a flurry of movement and then he stood up. “I am going to see her now.” he said flatly and then, without any further discussion, simply walked past the Captain and out of sickbay.

It took less than five minutes for Kreed to arrive at the hospital… much to the surprise of the staff as he materialized directly in the ICU. He blinked a few times and the reptilian head surveyed his surroundings. Seeing a Ridan male with a clipboard and stylus in his hand staring at him, Kreed said “I am Lieutenant Kreed, Star Fleet. Chief Medical Officer of the Sentinel and you have one of my medical team in your care, Lieutenant Leah Hart. Take me to her, and give me her records and the surgical report. I also want to see all her labs and blood work.” He waited two heartbeats before snapping loudly “Now, if you please.” and the nurse shook his head and said “I… um… I have to clear it with-” and Kreed shook his head and said “So clear it. I’ll find her myself.” and he walked past the nurse and “Kham! Where are you?!”

Kreed, CMO

The tall nurse appeared wearing a satisfied smirk. Then turned her head back towards the room and called out, “The cavalry is here.” Montri stepped to the side to allow him to enter Leah’s room, where the three medical department staff had taken up protective residence over their friend.

Kreed walked in and looked at Hart, then at the rest of the medical team. “Well done. All of you. I am glad you were here to ensure she was cared for.”

“They tried to get us to leave because visiting hours were over, but we refused,” Doctor Hunter said. “We said we had our orders and they’d have to force us out. They’ve let us be since then.” Leah was clearly still unconscious and had a dermal patch on the left side of her skull.

Kreed nodded and then said “Good. And we will keep aember of the ship’s medical team here at all times. No further treatments or anything unless cleared by me.”

Sol McMahon was sitting on a stool at Leah’s bedside. “Vitals are currently stable, but she apparently had a seizure just before we arrived. We tried to explain that we could help, because we could get her medical history for them, but they wanted to talk to someone in charge, so I’m glad you’re here, Sir,” the med tech said.

Kreed ahooknhoa head. “Too much concern for authority and too little for ensuring proper communication. That is not encouraging.” he said flatly.

Sylvia’s speciality was endocrinology. “We tried to tell them that yes, she’s Human but she’s also Aldebaranian, but I don’t think they were processing what that meant. Then again, it’s been busy. Now that Leah is stable, they have been dealing with other emergencies.”

“Ensure that any meds she is given take into account her rate of metabolism. If the hospital won’t pay close enough attention, then it falls to us to do so.” Kreed replied.

There was a knock on the doorframe and a Risian man stepped in. “Doctor Kreed, I’m Doctor Lairso. I handled the neurosurgery on your crewmember.” He held out a PADD with the files Kreed had requested. He was about to fill him in on the situation, but cast a look at the others in the room. Kham just glared. “We’re staying. Fill us in.”

Kreed locked black eyes on the Risian doctor and said “These individuals are part of my medical team on the ship Lieutenant Hart is serving aboard. They are specialists in their respective fields, and I strongly suggest that you stop worrying about who is told what and just get on with it.”

After a moment, Lairso nodded and walked them through everything. “Lieutenant Hart was seen stumbling outside by one of the pools at a resort. EMS took statements from the bystanders, one of who described her as looking panicked. Like she didn’t know where she was. She didn’t respond directly to questions and when the man reached out to help her, she panicked further and ended up tripping over a patio lounger and hit the deck with enough force to cause a cerebral hemorrhage on her left temporal lobe. She rolled into the pool and the bystander went in after her, knowing she was already unconscious. Fortunately, she wasn’t in very long and EMS was able to clear her airway fairly quickly, though we’re keeping on eye out for signs of secondary drowning.

“When she arrived in the ER, her heart rate was slow, and blood pressure low. Her blood alcohol level was 0.027%, but she also had high levels of psilocin, the metabolized version of psilocybin. Based on the repeat readings, we can tell her body metabolizes substances fast, and most of it is already out of her system, but we’ve kept her sedated for the time being to reduce the stress on her body that waking up somewhere unfamiliar might provoke.

“She had one seizure in the ER and then her ICP rose dramatically, and she blew her left pupil. She was rushed up into surgery and I drained the bleed and repaired the damage. She’ll need a full neurological workup when she awakens, but the damage was fairly limited.” Lairso took in a deep breath and took them all in for a moment. “She’s had another seizure since surgery, but her vitals have improved over time. She’s pretty lucky, all things considered. She’s not the first party-goer to have their fun end badly, but I am optimistic that with continued treatments for concussion she’ll make a full recovery.”

Kham frowned and shook her head. “Leah wouldn’t take recreational drugs. Yes, we were all drinking quite a bit last night, but like you said, her metabolism runs fast. She’s aware of that and paces herself accordingly.” She looked over at Kreed. “She was completely cognizant when we split up last night. We had a whole system of signs to communicate at the club that we arranged ahead of time. She was happy and having fun dancing and signalled she wanted to stay and we could go.”

“We should have stayed with her,” Sol muttered, guilt written all over her face.

“Leah’s a grown woman, who knows when she feels safe and comfortable. If she had wanted us to stay, or to leave with us, she would have said so,” Sylvia said.

~Leah & Co.

“Enough.” Kreed said definitively. “Positing over what ‘could’ have been done is pointless. Save that reflection for your personal time.” He looked at Hart and then back at his team, ignoring the Risian doctor for the time being. “Kham, contact the ship. Tell them we need the Security Chief here right now. Doctor Hunter. You will go with Doctor Lairso and the two of you will pull any files with similarities: recreational drug use, incoherency, seizures, anything of the like. Compile a full list for Security to review.” He then turned and looked at Lairso. “When did you contact local law enforcement and let them know someone was drugged against their will?” he asked flatly.

Kreed, CMO

Kham and Sylvia both nodded and Kahm slipped out of the room.

Lairso blinked at Kreed. “There has been no evidence to this point to suggest this was anything more than overindulgence. But if that is a concern, than I’ll check with the ER charge nurse to see if they might have already done so. If not, we’ll contact the constabulary.”

Now that the crew had been identified (and believed) about being medical staff too, one of the nurses let Kham into the break room to make her call. [O] Montri to Sentinel. Dr. Kreed has asked for the Chief of Security to come down immediately to help investigate the situation.[o]

Back in the room, Hunter moved beside Kreed , tipping the PADD in her direction. It was the first time she’d been able to look at all the full results. “Ironically, Leah’s research into therapeutic techniques across cultures is useful here. We were talking about it, so I know that psilocybin is used in micro-doses under the supervision of a clinician. It’s one of those substances that the dose determines the effects, but it’s not affected by metabolism nor body mass. However that is for Humans on Earth. I won’t discount variable effects of a larger dose on her body. And she still has 2.2 grams in her system. That means she would have ingested a rather large dose.” She cast a glance over at Lairson. “We’ll go see what’s in the database.” She leaned in and whispered to Kreed. “And I’ll make sure law enforcement is given the correct details.”

Sylvia stepped out of the room, leaving Kreed and Sol with Leah. The med tech was watching her vitals. “Even if she did take it herself, would she even remember? The hit to her temporal lobe could be problematic.”
