Kreed thought for a long time. “I think I would like to go to the Taliskar and see how the repairs are coming. Talk to the crew. They have been through a lot, and I think if I told them I appreciated all they did for me it might help them feel less… anxious… about everything.” He shook his head slightly. “I heard a few are refusing space-based assignments. That is a shame.”

Kreed

“It would be,” she agreed. “How do you feel about going back to the ship after everything?” Leah asked.

He looked at her with a somewhat confused expression. “I don’t understand. Should I not go back?” and he blinked a few times and then asked “Or should I be trepidacious about doing so? I do not feel that way. Is that a problem?”

Kreed

She shook her head slowly. “No, not necessarily. But for many people who experienced a traumatic event, there can be some uneasiness or anxiety about being there. For some, just being in the same places where a huge event happened can trigger some of the same emotions they felt at the time of the event. For many who do have this is can be intense, sometimes debilitating. That’s not to say we expect it, but we look out for it. And sometimes these things don’t surface right away, but later after they think they are doing fine.”

Leah leaned forward. “So what do you feel when you think about the Taliskar?”

Kreed thought for a long moment, setting aside the chopsticks. He looked out the window, and he tapped his fingers on the table slightly. “I feel… satisfied? Or perhaps… pleased?” and he looked back at Hart. “What we accomplished was truly impressive. Yes, we lost a few of the crew and that is absolutely tragic… but also part of what we do. And we could have… most likely should have… lost many more. Or even all of us and the ship. But we did not. And that is something I think is worth focusing on.”

She considered him for a moment and nodded. “I can take you under my care, as soon as you feel up for it. We don’t have to wait for you to be fully released, though they may request we wait until you are on your feet more consistently. It seems to me that the earlier you reconnect with the crew, the more those that are struggling maybe find their burdens eased. But it’s up to you, either way. What do you think?”

Kreed looked at her and said “Oh, I have been able to walk for a week. They just don’t seem to believe me. I am sore, of course. And I still have some lingering soft tissue and nerve damage; but that is being addressed. I should be fully recovered in the next two weeks or so. So I can go at any time. And I would like to. Perhaps tomorrow?”

Kreed

She smiled. “I think we should. I’ll make the arrangements. If they give me any crap, I’ll tell them the truth, that it’s good for your mental health to go for the visit, and we’ll take all the precautions we need to.”

“Tomorrow it is, then.” Kreed said flatly. He picked up the chopsticks and began eating with a bit more gusto.

The Next Day…

Kreed was dressed in his uniform for the first time since the accident. He had just finished attaching his Ensign’s pip and made sure everything was in place. His medals (a condition for his trip put forth by Command) were set perfectly and he felt good, all things considered. He had a cane, although he didn’t really need it. He looked at himself in the mirror one last time.

“You look sharp, Kreed.” a voice said form behind him. Kreed turned to see Dr. Holt, the Physical Therapist. “How are you feeling?” Kreed nodded. “I feel very good, Doctor. Thank you. Soreness is still there, but I think the adrenaline for being out of the hospital for a bit is masking some of it. i will make sure not to over exert myself.” Holt chuckled. “Ever the doctor… well, good luck. Bring me back a hat if they have one, will you?” and he waved and left the room.

A couple minutes later, Hart showed up in her white nurse’s uniform and smiled. “Well, I bet that feels better. You ready to go? And for the record, if you hear anything, the disagreement between myself and some of the doctors is nothing you have to worry about.” There was a fierce gleam in her eyes.

Kreed didn’t turn, still looking at himself. “It feels… odd. Not the uniform. The rank. I still find it difficult to grasp that I fell unconscious a Cadet, and awoke an Ensign with a full commission in Star Fleet.” He then turned and looked at Hart. “Did you know that less one hundredth of one percent of the population of the Federation are Star Fleet officers?” He looked back in the mirror. “A small percentage, indeed.” He took a breath and then turned, seemingly nonplussed about anything. “Shall we, then?” and he stepped out of the room and onto the ward.

A nurse walked up to him and smiled broadly. “Doctor Kreed… I am pleased to see you stepping out for a change. Do NOT push yourself, however. I expect to see you walk back in here later; not being pushed in a chair.” Kreed nodded once. “My word, Nurse Simms.” He looked back at Hart. “Lead on.”
