Quinn felt not one ounce of regret in the trade she’d made with the ship’s chef. She shared some of her favorite recipes for time in the ship’s kitchen. It worked out well. She was setting down a platter of freshly made croissants traditional butter, vanilla bean cream filled, cinnamon and sugar and andorian chocolate filled. She also set down a platter of Kouign-Amann, it was a puff pastry that was like eating a salted caramel croissant. It was a favorite of hers and she was hoping to get a few other crew members to like it enough, to make the four and a half hours of work on the pastry to be worth the effort. There was a pot of tea for those that preferred that with breakfast. She was enjoying a peppermint filled hot chocolate for herself. There was also various juices and other drink choices spread on the table.

Much to the mortification of her yeoman, Rende insisted that Rand did not need to act as waitress and servant for her. Rand was her assistant and an exceptionally competent one. Rende was more than capable of getting her own chow, and she preferred to be among the crew. How else would they get to know her if she hid in her quarters or the bridge all the time? She liked to be around people.

Rende had just exited the showers in the gymnasium and was heading down a deck for the mess. The lift doors opened and the smell of fresh baked pastry filled the corridor. She wondered what Gorshin had made today. Entering the mess, mouth watering in anticipation, she was surprised to find, not Gorshin, but their new chief medical officer behind the counter. “Good Morning Lt. Are you the cause of that delightful aroma filling the corridor?”

Quinn smiled cheekily, “Good morning Captain, and I hope so, there’s croissants and some other pastries, you’re more than welcome to take some.” she said with a help yourself motion at the spread of platters, drinks and pitchers.

Rende nodded and grabbed a plate and peeked at the various options on display. She chose a small selection of the items and then poured a drink and moved over to a table and sat. “How are you settling in, Doctor?”

“I am settling in well, thank you. Happy my bonsai trees made the trip without gaining any damage. Though I did somehow loose some yarn. If anyone finds a few skeins in silver and cerulean blue please have them find me.” Quinn replied lightly with a cheeky grin.

“I will ask Rand and Chief Helpful to keep an eye out. They seem to be able to track anything down.” Rende smiled. “That is good to hear. I hope the previous Medical Officer didn’t leave too much unfinished work for you.” She took a bite of the still warm pastry. “Mmmm…very good.”

Quinn gave the Captain a moment to enjoy the pastry and replied before she sipped her peppermint hot chocolate. “I appreciate it and no they didn’t leave much to do. The office was bare when I arrived so at least they didn’t forgot any knick knacks. There was a bottle of Brandy in the desk draw, not sure what to do with it.” she dropped her voice at the last bit. Not that she had problems if folks wanted to add to their coffee or what have you but she didn’t. If nothing else she might use it for a cake recipe.

Rende chuckled, “An old Earth custom used to use spirits as ‘medicine’. Many were actually first developed for that. Of course you probably know that. Perhaps your predecessor was using it as such?” Rende sipped at her glass. “I can’t stop people from drinking, but I highly disapprove of imbibing such on duty. Do with it as you wish.” It probably wasn’t very good Brandy if they left it behind.

“I figure I can try it in a triple chocolate cheesecake or a few of them since it looked brand new.” Quinn said at last, she did indeed know of how liquor used to be the cure all but it did help when there was limited resources for keeping things clean. She didn’t drink but using liquor in baking or other food to add flavor she didn’t mind experimenting that way.
