Kovan, the comms officer this shift, examined the signal for a moment, then turned in his seat, “Commander, there is a distress beacon mark two-five-point-six and ten light-years from our current location. It’s a general distress signal being transmitted across ten common frequencies.” All in all a rather simple signal. Practically commercial with how mundane it was. Definitely not Starfleet. Perhaps something more local? “No audio, but the beacon is transmitting the location loud and clear.” Kovan paused to do the calculations in his head, it wouldn’t be a huge detour to go and check it out, “Shall I send coordinates to helm?”
“Send the coordinates,” Roman replied. “Approach with caution.”
Kovan waited for approval from the XO before translating the signal into text their computers could understand then sent that text to helm with a press of a button. Helm acknowledge the transfer and gave their estimated time of arrival. Not too far off from what Kovan predicted in his head. The ship shuddered as she put on a burst of spread and gently drifted onto her new course. “I’ll alert medical,” Kovan said for want of something to do. There really wasn’t any more to the signal. With a couple more presses Kovan sent his voice into sickbay =^=Bridge to sickbay. Medical team standby. Ship en route to distress beacon, possible emergency. Unsure of the situation. Will update as we learn more. Bridge out.=^=
=^= Understood bridge, sickbay is standing by to receive any casualties. =^=
Then it was a waiting game. The bridge quiet as the Sentinel traveled, everyone tense, waiting until the distressed ship came within sensor range.
En Veera Harvey at the science station spoke next. Data from low-resolution scans were now available, “Single vessel, small, maybe no more than five decks. No dilithium warp propulsion system. Max warp speed estimated to be warp 2 and doubtful it could maintain that for long. No weapon systems. Little to no power. The ship is likely a transport vessel, designed to move people short distances.” She hummed, thinking, “There are two possible class M planets in this system that could be the origin of this ship but traveling to either of them would add days of travel time. Hopefully the survivors will be able to tell us where they hail from.”
“If someone is alive to tell us,” Kovan said bluntly. The officer to his right shoot him a look but Kovan played it no mind. Was it a crime to acknowledge that there may be no one to save? Though, Kovan’s remark did seem to bring the spirits of the bridge crew down. If people were tense before, they were downright nervous now. No one liked the idea of being unable to help. To arrive only to find that they were too late. Many weren’t even considering that possibility until Kovan spoke up.
“Your optimism is… refreshing, Ensign,” Roman commented from his seat. “We assume they’re alive till we learn otherwise.”
At two light-years away from the beacon En Harvey spoke again, “Ship now in high-resolution range. One vessel, four decks. All systems down except for life support and communications. There’s a life-signal! It’s weak but it’s there. Humanoid with injuries along shoulders and back and heart beat is weak. Shall I ready a transport beam?” She looked to Kovan who relayed everything to medical.
“Ready the beam. Beam them aboard when ready.” Roman said.
=^=Bridge to medical team. One humanoid onboard the ship. In weak condition. Head to Transport Room 2 to receive. Bridge out.=^=
=^= Acknowledged bridge, emergency medical team are on the way. =^=
The bridge crew were sitting on the edge of their seats. Someone was alive on that ship and they could save them. The Sentinel glided to a stop some several thousand feet away from the simple transport vessel. The XO gave the command and the sole survivor was broken down in molecules by a beam of light. En Harvey confirmed successful transport.

A beam of light lit up one of the transport pads, then lovingly stitched together a beautiful female-presenting humanoid. Her skin like golden honey, hair as dark and as full of luster as raven feathers in the light and adorned with dark blue cloth with gold bead accents and black lace. She lay prone upon the floor, breathing by the shallow rise of her chest. Though no one could see it, there were long, shallow gashes trailing from her shoulders to her lower back. The injuries revealed burnt orange flesh that did not bleed. The injured flesh didn’t seem to show any signs having blood at all, though tricorder scans would suggest that have blood as many humanoids did.

As the emergency medical team hurried into the transporter room, Charlie instinctively dropped to her knees next to the casualty as NE Handy passed her a tricorder.
She gently placed a hand on her shoulder whilst she started taking initial readings of the woman’s injuries, being careful to avoid her exposed flesh as she spoke in a reassuring tone. “Can you hear me? You’re safe now on board the federation starship Sentinel. We’re going to take care of you,” She spoke softly as the rest of the medical team pulled a stretcher next to the injured woman and Charlie checked the tricorder readings.
The woman began to stir, first a twitch of a hand, a shoulder, her legs. For a moment her eyes opened, revealing stunning golden eyes, the color of which rivaled every ripe orange, every tiger lily and held the warmth of every warm sun. She gasped in pain and her eyes squeezed shut. The woman began to pant as her entire body tensed.
Charlie took the woman’s hand as she tensed. “Take it easy, we’ve got you,” she said softly as the Nurse handed her a hypospray of Omnicaine. Charlie gently pressed the hypospray to the woman’s neck and administered a low dose as she wasn’t sure how the woman’s physiology would take it. “My name’s Charlie, I’m a doctor,” she added, hoping that even if the woman didn’t understand her words, she would sense her tone. “We’re going to take you to our medical bay now so that we can help you, you don’t need to be afraid, no harm will come to you here,” she added gently.

Charlie closed the tricorder and passed it back to NE Handy. “Let’s get her to sickbay, gently does it,” she ordered the rest of the team as they carefully transferred the woman onto the stretcher.
“Keep the ship within the tractor beam. Don’t let it drift off.” Roman said, watching the viewscreen. “Ensign Harvey, send probes to both planets, check for inhabitants.” Then he spoke to each of the senior staff: “Lieutenant Anders, I want a security team to the transporter bay. We don’t want to leave our guest unguarded… Just in case. MCPO Johansson, send Engineers aboard the ship, both to investigate it and for repairs. Bring Security with you. Our sensors tell us there is little atmosphere aboard that vessel. You will all be wearing EVA suits.” Then using the comms to speak to Medical, =/\= Lieutenant Bailey, I want a report on our new guest’s condition as soon as you have one. =/\=
~ Cmdr Alden, XO/CSO
=^= Aye sir, we’re moving her to sickbay now, I’ll update you once she’s been triaged. =^= Charlie replied as they hurried towards sickbay. =^= Commander Alden, do we have any information about what happened to her? =^=

Harvey clicked the ship comms. =O=Torpedo control prepare 2 class 1 probes.=C= Harvey sent the coordinates for the two class M planets to the tactical station. When the probes were ready the probes were launched. “Probes launched and returning a signal Cmdr.”
Harvey, Sci
It would take several minutes for the probes to reach their destination. The ship itself was firmly locked into place by the tractor beam and offered no resistance. On the view screen, if the bridge crew took the time to closely examine the image, would find signs of long-term wear and tear on the vessel. To see a running ship showing decades of age upon its hull could strike the crew as unusual. The march of age decays everything, given enough time, and to let a space ship reach such a state without replacing the old parts would make any starship fragile and vulnerable.
