“Miranda, you look like you have five cups of Scottish Coffee with the whisky.” Roman said, looking as though he was already contemplating whether the risk of lifting her again was worth it or not. It was a bad idea, his chest was already hurting, but he refused to put an arm over it, it would warn Rand how he was feeling. But Roman and thinking he couldn’t do something was a bad mix, he’d stubbornly feel the need to prove he could do it. “Elbbirt will just check and make sure you’re okay. That’s what you would want me to do, isn’t it? Just to be sure?” He, again with the double standards, did not plan on mentioning his own disobedience nor the consequences of his actions. He just wanted Rand’s head looked at.~ Roman
Rand just muttered something about she didn’t drink. However, she did stop trying to steady herself and let Roman support her as they walked. Luckily for him, she had to walk slowly, which was better for him as well. She didn’t like it, she’d just tripped, that was all, right? She didn’t want to stay in sickbay again. She nodded quietly anyway.
She would want him to make sure, and it would make him feel better. They made it into sickbay, but she didn’t go past the small waiting area, leaning against his arm, standing still because she was suddenly really dizzy. That seemed to happen at the worst times.Rand
Roman sat her down in one of the waiting room chairs. “Maybe I should just call Randy over,” He said, thinking aloud. She was obviously dizzy again, she didn’t need to be walking more than she had to. He wished it were easier to lift her. In the end that was what he decided to do. Besides not wanting to go wandering around Sickbay, he still hated this place too, he would only be in the way trying to look for him or Elbbirt or Grat so, still standing by her, he pulled out his communicator and paged Randy with it.
~ Roman
Rand sat in the chair, hoping she’d be ignored for more pressing medical issues. Did he say he was paging Randy? She groaned, just great, over protective big brother. She heard Roman on the com and groaned again. He was paging Randy.
Randy appeared, it wasn’t his shift, but he came anyway, very quickly. He took one look at both of them and if he wasn’t such a professional would have growled in frustration. He moved over to Rand, but an arm around her and helped her stand. He’d carry her, but he wanted to assess how bad she was. Apparently bad enough because he suddenly lifted her and carried her the rest of the way to the biobed. His foot reached out and snagged the leg of chair and drag/pushed/slung it over to the bed. He set Rand down and just jerked a thumb at Roman toward the chair. There was a very short very soft exchange between the twins that Randy obviously won. He made Rand lay down and then turned on the biobed. He reached into the storage cabinet underneath and pulled out an icepack and handed it to Roman. “For her head.” It also kept him still. If he didn’t know Roman so well, Randy didn’t think he would realize something was wrong with him. “I’ll go get the doctor.”
Randy
It was a fantastic way to keep Roman still, as soon as Randy handed him the ice pack, he was leaned forward in the chair, pressing it to Rand’s head. “I won’t leave while you’re here,” he said to her. He was hoping she wasn’t here long enough he’d need to. The hand that wasn’t holding the ice pack was clenching the sheet of Rand’s bed, and he hoped it looked more like he was just worried about her (he was, he really was) than in pain, which his chest was. It was hurting. Not as bad as he vaguely remembered it hurting during the end of his flashback, but it definitely hurt and wasn’t comfortable.
Rand didn’t move her head, it would make the throbbing and vice like sensation worse. “Okay.” She found his hand and held on. She didn’t hit her head, so why did it feel like she did?
Once Randy left to get a doctor, Roman used his free hand to pat his pockets. Rescue hypo… rescue hypo… Where did it go? It wasn’t with him. He returned his hand to the sheets and thought back. He’d brought it to the gym, but left it in his gym bag, and he hadn’t stopped to grab those when he took Rand. The rescue hypo was in the gym, not with him. That was okay… Right? He was resting now, maybe the pain would start to go away on its own. He thought he’d gotten away clean, that Randy had been too focused on his sister to notice anything about Roman. The way his breaths were a little faster and shallower, the tenseness at the corner of his eyes that always told Rand he was hurting, the way he stiffly moved, as if avoiding causing more pain, there were always signs he couldn’t hide. But Randy had been too distracted to notice… Right?
Maybe he shouldn’t have pushed so hard. He hadn’t been taking it easy since getting out of Sickbay, and it was slowing his recovery. It was the first time he felt like he needed his rescue hypo (and because he wasn’t used to carrying any meds, he didn’t have it. It was a surprise he’d remembered to throw it in his gym bag) but it wasn’t the first time he’d pushed a little too hard. He did that nearly daily. He was frustrated with what he could and couldn’t do and he was trying, for Rand’s sake and because he knew how dangerous it could be for him, but he wasn’t very good with ‘listening to his body’ as Elbbirt had said, and he got a little carried away with things.
~ Roman
Randy reappeared quickly and placed a hypo next to Roman. “You dropped this.” Then hurried back out and approached the nearest doctor. “Patient on biobed 3.”
Randy
Alwyn turned around to face Randy : “On it.” He approached the bed only to see Rand on it, with Roman at his side. He saw that Rand managed to hit herself when she was supposed to be at rest.
He noticed the hypo that Roman was holding and says : “Go on.”“What happened to her ?” continued the doctor. “She was supposed to be at rest.” Clearly, he was upset about it, but he didn’t want Roman to be pressured that much. From the way he looked, he already was.
Lieutenant JG Alwyn Yarwood - CMO
Rand tried to turn her head to look at....Yarwood, it was Yarwood, but Roman’s hand was firmly attached to the icepack at the back of her head. “Nothing happened.” She spoke very slowly to make sure she spoke clearly and not slurred or slipped back into Gaelic. That hadn’t happened in almost a week. “I was walking around the gym. Elbbirt said I could walk around.” (OOC: Elbbirt being an NE doctor)
Yeoman Rand
Roman looked between her and the doctor. Why did he have to be the medically responsible one? He was terrible at that. And they both knew the next time he hurt himself he was going to avoid it like the plague. Still, he had to do it. “You were running around the gym. That’s too much exercise for your head injury. And then you fell. And now you’re dizzy and I know your head hurts. What if you hit it again?” He kept the ice pack firmly but gently pressed to her head while he spoke.
~ Roman
Yarwood sigh before launching a general scan on Rand. “Do you remember what happened after, Rand ?” the doctor asked. “Anything ?”
“I…I tripped.” Rand glanced at her hands. Her palms were red and a bit scraped. “Landed on my hands. Then Roman helped me up and brought me here.” Her words were slow and slurred. Which was normal since her concussion but the slurring seemed a bit more noticeable at the moment. “I… don’t think…I hit my head.”
He turned to Roman and Randy : “I believe she was already injured. Did it worsen with her fall ?”
Roman glanced at her, then Yarwood. “That’s why we’re here. I think she sounds more slurred than before.” His tone was gruff but it was all worry for Rand. Roman was a humongous worry wart when it came to his fiancée.
(OOC : sorry for the wait, I was at the mountain with literally no connection, I just had the time to declare the LOA in the car.)
Lieutenant JG Alwyn Yarwood - CMO
The scan would not show any new injury, but that the activity had aggravated her still healing concussion.
Yeoman Rand
Roman waited for Yarwood, holding Rand’s hand, for his comfort as much as hers.
~ Roman
Alwyn looked at the scan and said : “Well she is, Commander. It worsens, but she is still stable. She is lucky to have no fracture, the worse we can have is a cerebral edema.”Roman nodded worriedly. “The original injury was about a month ago, but…” He glanced at Randy as if to confirm what he was saying, “It was a severe concussion, so she’s still healing.”
Randy nodded. “The explosion blew her back several feet and when she landed her head bounced off the floor a couple times. She also had severe burns to her forearms, hands, and abdomen. Those are healed now.”
Aaron nodded at Randy’s explanation. “Several times, huh…”
He turned around and said to Randy : “Go get me a bandage and 2cc of cordrazine. That should be enough.”
Back at Roman, he said : “Did she do anything weird, or uncommon before she arrived here ?”
Lieutenant Alwyn Yarwood - CMO
Roman shook his head to answer the second question. “I don’t think so. I think she just wanted her normal routine. She always goes jogging.” But right now, jogging wasn’t good for the concussion.
~ Roman
Alwyn smiled and said : “Oh, I’m sure jogging is normal, but I was talking about after the fall.” He tried not to rush Roman. He was clearly worried, and questions like that tend to stress people more.Roman blinked and then nodded, realizing he’d answered the question ‘wrong’. He thought back and then shook his head. “Her speech seemed a little more slurred but otherwise she didn’t change.”
“Hmm”, said the doctor, as he was searching for the brain area that could be damaged. Speech slurred… It might be the Broca Zone. We’ll put it under surveillance.
Randy returned with the bandages and a hypospray containing 2cc of cordrazine and set them on the tray next to Yarwood.
“Thanks, Randy”, said the doctor and took the hypospray from him. “If you could wrap the bandage tight around her head, I want to stabilize her internal cranial pressure.” He then started to approach Rand’s arms with the hypo.
Rand was listening, trying to keep up. Seeing the hypo she started to try and get up, pushing Roman’s hand away, despite the rush of dizzy blackness. “Wha....what’s that for?” She was not going to be sedated.
Yeoman Rand
Seeing Rand moving at the view of the hypospray, he said with a soft voice : “Hey, slow down. That’s just some cordrazine, enough to keep you awake.”
Lieutenant JG Alwyn Yarwood - CMO
Roman moved his hand when she pushed it away, placing it back on her shoulder. “Don’t move, Rand, be careful.” He said, looking down at her with concern. “It’s to keep you awake, see? Nothing bad.” He knew what she was afraid it was, and he was telling her it wasn’t, without telling Yarwood, because like his own fear of sickbay he wasn’t sure he’d want anyone besides himself and Randy to know.
~ Roman
Awake? It was enough to make her pause as Yarwood and Roman explained. “Okay.” She looked uncertain, but she stopped pushing Roman away. Randy took advantage of her hesitation and put a hand under her neck. “Rest your head back. Let me do this.” Instead she craned her head back trying to figure out what her twin was up to and he chastised her quietly. “Hold still and let me bandage this.” Randy carefully wrapped the bandage around her head.
While Randy was putting on the bandage, Alwyn pressed the hypo on her arm and pressed the button. The hypo made his typical sound, and it was done. “See ?” said the doctor with a smile. “Nothing to be afraid of.”
She let Yarwood give her the hypo, but was squeezing Roman’s hand tightly. Had she hit her head? Why was Randy putting a bandage on her head?
Yeoman Rand
“Now, I want you to focus.” From Rand’s interrogative face, Alwyn could see the effect of the cordrazine slowly working. He let some time for Rand to concentrate before saying : “What was the last thing you remember ?”
