Roman went through the movements. It was a lot easier than the night before. When they were done he, he sat down in a chair in the room. “A bit lightheaded. Not as bad as before.” He answered Randy’s question, apparently in a cooperative mood.

Randy nodded, “It is about time for your dose, so that could be part of it. The other is you blood sugar is lower than normal. With an unsettled stomach you probably didn’t eat much yesterday. I know you’re tired of hearing it but it all works together. So grab something to eat and your usual tea. If after you get your dose you are still light headed, comm me. We’ll take another scan. But your heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and blood oxygen are all great. So it’s probably just left over from yesterday.

Roman nodded again. He’d skipped lunch and dinner yestereday, and his breakfast hadn’t been that large either. Randy was probably right.

“I think helping Gorshin might be good for her. Even if she doesn’t want to go. And, don’t kill me, let her spend time with Scott, not every day mind you. The girl can get on your last nerve, but she’s not going to let Rand just sit there and do nothing. I don’t want Rand to over do it, but…” Randy was conflicted. Their family had made a mistake when Rand had been sick before and the results were disastrous. He didn’t want that to happen again.

Randy

Roman nodded. “Helping Gorshin is definitely good for her. Keeps her doing something, which keeps her happier, somewhere where someone has an eye on her.” To Randy’s second suggestion Roman made a face. “She means well, she wouldn’t let Rand over do it, at least not purposefully. But she really stresses Rand out.” He said.

Randy nodded, “She does. But trying to keep up with the conversation would be good for Rand. Not every day....what if we controlled the environment? I could ask Scott to sit with her, here in my quarters. That wouldn’t invade Rand’s privacy or make her sit in the rec hall, which she hates. It would be only slightly uncomfortable. She’s going to have to learn to deal with that again if she wants to go back to duty.” Randy hated it and his tone said as much. They both also knew there was no way to know when she would be medically ready to go back.

Randy

Roman nodded in agreement. “I think that’s a good idea… I know she’s frustrated with her recovery and she wants to get back.” He sighed, “but I have no idea how to help her do that. At least that sounds like a plan.”

Randy nodded, “I’m not sure either. Concussions are strange and can take awhile. And hers is so severe that it’s possible she will have relapses over the years, just randomly. I’ve asked Elbbirt and Grat again about the meds for a concussion. They are worried about it causing an acute panic attack or strain on her heart. Normally not a huge concern but after her other injuries, not worth the risk.” Randy felt a little helpless, his specialty was mental health, he should be able to come up with something. “The biggest problem is non duty related tasks for her to do. The Sentinel was not built for leisure, and in her current state there is a limited amount of tasks she can help with until cleared.”

Roman nodded. “I wish she could have the meds. I also understand we can’t risk an incident with her heart.” He sighed. “I just wish there were more we could do.”

Randy closed up his tricorder and set it down. “I’ll talk with her today about it. Until then, I won’t keep you and we’ll meet you in the Galley at lunch. I think you’ll be fine for the day.”

Randy

He nodded and stood. “Comm me if you need anything. I keep it on all the time in case she needs something.” Then Roman headed down to the lab.

And so Rand’s days turned into a week. She spent time every day in the Galley helping Gorshin. She enjoyed helping him, and Gorshin always had stories to tell, but never pushed Rand to talk unless she wanted. He tried learning some of the Gaelic words for food and cooking, but Randy encouraged him to let Rand work on speaking English more. Though it was natural given her concussion that she would rely on her native language she was going to have to speak English if she wanted to return to work. Using the UT wasn’t an option for a language so little used. It would have to be programmed, because it hadn’t picked up on the Gaelic automatically despite how much it was being used. Randy did consider asking Kovan about it. The man was good with languages.

Randy had been excused from most of his medical duties, to take over Rand’s job. The Sentinel needed her yeoman and couldn’t go longer without someone to perform those duties. Randy took her with him for things like, running errands, the captain’s uniforms, stocking the conference room, Roger’s ready room, delivering meals, anything that didn’t require looking at a computer screen. Those duties, the endless reports, Randy did himself, and the backlog was insane.

Randy had her help him and Roman build puzzles or play board games. Things that would make her think. At first it gave her headaches, and they would stop, but as the days continued she was able to do more. When she started watching vids and reading books on her own without complaining, Randy gave her word and number puzzles to work on, even tried to get her to read scripts and do lines. That seemed to totally upset her and she stubbornly refused to even look at them.

Rand

Roman’s job was a lot harder without Rand. He was drowning in reports and paperwork all the time and often had to stay late to finish everything he needed to do. On the bright side, doing so much paperwork kept him sitting and not overworking himself, but it meant he was often grouchy and unhappy during his shift. When he wasn’t working, he was helping Randy with Rand, doing puzzles and and playing games with her to get her to think. When she refused to read lines, it worried Roman. She used to love doing that. He had been trying to get her to do lines with him too, but so far, hadn’t been able to convince her.

That night he was off late again and stopped by the galley on his way up to grab food. He set the tray down in their quarters and grabbed his plate, sitting down with it. He kept a script for one of her favorite plays out and he, again, offered it to her. “It’s been forever since you’ve done any lines, and you love doing that,” he said.
