Haadok hadn’t lifted her thumb from the comm panel before a curious proposition met her ears. Piqued, she turned and beheld Nurse Shrine and the young, fiery-haired woman she assumed to be one Yeoman Rand.

“Physical,” she affirmed in her swift approach. “Though I suspect the slightest utterance of the word motivates anyone to play ‘catch-up’ on paperwork.” A grimace crept into her tone but refused to touch her lips. “Apologies,” she dismissed brief tangent with a bow, “I’m Doctor Haadok. You must be Ensign Rand?” She posed the question slowly, attempting to dodge the inevitable fate that was misassigning another person’s name.

— Haadok, CMO (who’s not the best with names)

Rand grinned, “I am. Though I’m sure you’ve met my brother, En. Randy. If not, you’ll know when you have.” She was relieved that the doctor hadn’t attempted her last name. No one ever got it right. “Captain Rogers can’t claim paperwork, I do it all. Actually that’s why I’m here -picking up reports from Shrine.” Rand could empathize with the doctor’s frustration. If people would just follow protocol things would run much more smoothly. “I can have Rogers here by 0930. Earlier if you want her fasting.” Rand had to finish picking up the last of the reports. She could always go over them with Rogers after the physical if the doc wanted her in earlier.

Yeoman Rand

Haadok regarded Rand with an air of veiled appreciation. “I cannot say I’ve had the pleasure to meet Nurse Randy,” she spoke thoughtfully, “but now I’m curious.” She didn’t linger on the thought long enough to suppose what Rand meant, but she had common sense enough to know it’d be interesting. “Fasting, please.” Haadok added without hesitation. Fasting meant more medical liberty… and a possibly curt encounter with a hungry Captain. Fortunately, she lacked the emotional breadth and forbearance to mind. “I appreciate your help,” she bowed her head and glanced between them. “Until then, I’ll leave you to your rounds.”

— Haadok, CMO

Rand nodded, “Anytime Dr. Haadok.” Rand picked up the reports from Shrine and then was on her way, making her way up the decks to collect everything. She stopped by the Galley to hold Rogers’ breakfast and then made her way to the bridge, collected the last reports and then dropped them all off in her office. No reports in hand, meant no distraction.

At 0730 Rand, a bit earlier than normal, rang the chime at the Captain’s door.

Once the door was opened Rand greeted Rogers. “Good morning Captain. We’re starting early today. Time to go. You have an over due appointment with Medical.”

Yeoman Rand

Shirley stood up from her desk in response to Rand’s demand that she followed Starfleet protocol and complete her medical assessment. Who was she to argue the case with her Yeoman? Rand was correct in this case and Shirley had been putting it off for far to long. She was supposed to set the standard for her crew, even for the small things like going to medical appointments promptly. Shirley approached Rand, “I know, I know. I am on it Ensign. Lets head on over there.” She immediately headed in the direction to medical to meet with the Chief Medical Officer but kept a pace so that Rand and her could walk together.

Rand kept easy pace next to the captain. Most of the time Rand was either speed walking or at a light job moving through the corridors. She was busy and didn’t have time to waste going on a casual stroll down the corridors. Rand skipped the first lift as it was having maintenance run that day and went on to lift 2. She grabbed the handle and twisted it, “Deck 9.”

During their walk, Shirley turned her head to meet Rand’s gaze, “Ensign, I have an assignment for you. I want to have a phaser training session with members of the crew to evaluate and assess their readiness for combat in case we encounter a hostile situation in the Abyss. We have to always be ready and on point. Issue a message to the senior staff letting them know to meet with me in the weapons room for target practice at 09:00 tomorrow. I want you to participate as well. Do you have any experience with phasers?” She perked a brow.

Rand nodded crisply, “Of course Captain. I’ll get that sent out immediately.” In fact, Rand lifted her PaDD from where it hung from it’s strap on her shoulder. She made a few quick taps, “How long do you want the weapons room blocked out for?”

Shirley ruminated over her Yeoman’s question over the time duration of having the weapons room open for phaser training briefly, “Two hours should suffice Ensign, but if we need extra innings, then we will work until we are through.” Captain Rogers was the type of Starfleet officer that would literally not rest until the job was completed with a goal of exceeding expectations.

“Yes, Cpt.” Her stylus tapped a staccato rhythm on her PaDD as she blocked out the time and added it to the out going memo.

She was also at the same time starting to draft a memo to send out to the department heads. Rand paused and looked up at the captain. Of course, with a tactical background she would expect such a thing. She’d tried to get Lt Fordham to give her extra practice, but then he left, and then Carmichael left, and they hadn’t had a COS for awhile. And the whole idea got shunted to the side in all the work. “Not particularly, Cpt. Phaser and hand to hand training is not required for yeoman, and extra spots in those classes are at a premium. I know how to point and fire it, make sure the safety is engaged or not. That’s the extent of it.”

Shirley sighed, not due to Rand’s explanation considering it was accurate according to the Star Fleet Academy training regimens for officer training, but due to that being a missed opportunity for Starfleet as a whole. She had been involved in the field of Security even prior to her Starfleet career having worked casinos in Las Vegas back on Earth to build up her experience in the area for future job applications along with fulfilling her goal of bettering herself.

Shirley contemplated a response for her Ensign which would come off blunt, “Well you are quite fortunate Ensign in two ways here actually. In the first way, I am happy to hear that the Sentinel nor any other ship you have served on had not ever had an enemy boarding party. Based off of your entire portfolio, you are a quality officer, asset to Starfleet, and have family along with others that love you out there without a doubt. Now you are also fortunate in this second way, I will not speak for my peers, but you are now under my command, and I will do my absolute best to ensure your safety. That comes with having an ability to defend yourself in unexpected and hazardous situations that we may face in the coming future. I am a natural explorer with the best of them, but not everyone outside of Starfleet shares our core values. I look forward to working with you Ensign.” Shirley smiled warmly at Rand.

Rand wasn’t sure what to say to that so she simply uttered a “Thank you, Cpt.” Did the woman really just say that if the ship was boarded and it went wrong it would be Rand’s fault? It wasn’t like Rand hadn’t tried to get the training and argued for it. It wasn’t like Rand wasn’t aware of the procedures for such possibilities. Oh this was BAD. So bad....did Rogers really believe that? And what in blue blazes did her family have to do with it. These thoughts though we’re hidden from Rogers or any passerbys behind her calm collected professional composure.

Walking into sickbay, Rand stopped the nearest nurse. “Cpt Rogers is here for her appt with Dr Haadok.”

Yeoman Rand

Shirley crossed her arms patiently waiting for her new Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Haadok. She had known her for quite some time and looked forward to working with her once again. It was nice to see a familiar face in a new assignment for Shirley. She turned to Rand, “You are dismissed Ensign, thank you for your assistance today.”

  • Captain Shirley Rogers

“Yes, Cpt.” Rand did a crisp about face and strode with a click of heels down the corridor.
