Alwyn grinned at the CMO’s interest. He says: “Long story short, I wanted to have a 3d chess game at home, and while I made some research, I discovered about his ancestor, the 2d one. And fortunately, my grandpa shows me an old chess plate that once was owned by his grandfather.” The doctor smiled at the memory when he held the dusty wooden plate, with the faded squares and colors.

“I made some research on the subject, and I tried to restore it the best I could. After a moment, he was like brand new! I finished it a year before I arrive here.”

Doctor Alwyn Yarwood - Enseign

Haadok listened with narrowed, attentive eyes. Though limited in her knowledge of human emotions, she detected a twinge of sentiment in Alwyn’s reminiscent smile. Vulcan doctrine made no enemy of pride, viewing it as an indispensable tool in the face of suspicion and dispute. Haadok suspected, however, that his smile was more than pride. Love, perhaps? Emotional attachment stemming from his connection to his grandfather? She pondered its meaning but found herself ultimately unsure. Human emotions were confusing and far too intricate to reduce to a simple word. Highly inefficient.

“Fascinating,” she muttered, “do you—“

[O]Nurse Broderick to Doctor Haadok.[O] The nurse’s hoarse and hurried voice bellowed from a tabletop comm-panel. [O]There’s a patient with a ‘debilitating pain’ insisting you check it out.[O]

Haadok didn’t need an encyclopedia on human emotion to detect the irritation in his voice. Something had ‘hit a nerve’, encouraging an agreeable man to bitterness. But that wasn’t so much her concern as this patient’s ‘debilitating pain’…whatever and wherever it might be.

[O]Thank you, Broderick. Tell the patient I’ll be with them momentarily.[O] She lifted her finger from the switch and glanced at Alwyn. “You are not scheduled for duty until 0800 hours tomorrow,” Haadok assured, “but I would appreciate a second opinion. Care to consult, Doctor?”

— Haadok, CMO

Smiling at Haadok, Alwyn nodded at him: “Of course, sir. Even off duty.” He wondered what kind of patient could upset a nurse, but according to the tone, it shouldn’t be that bad. Surely an overreacting patient to a minor problem.

OOC: Sorry for the wait!

“Excellent,” Haadok rose and jabbed a thumb at the door. Though she intended to give Yarwood the abridged rundown, Broderick’s eagle eyes spotted the pair before their boots cleared her office.

“Doctor…” he beckoned with a slight wiggle of his PaDD, “and… doctor?” Broderick wavered and pulled his alabaster features into a conflicted though fleeting frown. He prided himself on a keen awareness of all who filtered through sickbay, and yet, this young physician had somehow slipped through the cracks. “Nurse Diedre Broderick,” he approached and extended a sinewy hand, “you must be the new recruit, doctor…?”

— Haadok and Broderick

“Alwyn Yarwood”, completed the young human, shaking Broderick’s hand. “And yes, I have joined the ship recently. Nice to meet you.” He could feel Broderick’s strength while shaking his hand and resisted the temptation to slip his hand from the nurse’s grip. The man looked as unemotional as Haadok, although he seemed to shows a bit of hesitation when both doctors stepped out of the office.

The nurse was really good at not showing his intentions, and his presence was more the one of a bodyguard than a nurse. Yet, if his hands were strong, he could feel the medical experience he had behind those muscles. It was truly impressive to look into his eyes.

“I’m looking forward to working with you !”, Alwyn says with a smile, trying to ease the bit of tension he felt from Broderick. For some reason, Alwyn’s presence troubled him, and the young doctor didn’t want to have any problems on his first day of (unofficial) work. Turning at Haadok, he waited for her to lead the way.

“Likewise,” Broderick echoed in a curt nod and turned to Haadok.

“Mr Skahlem is on biobed four. He is complaining of ‘debilitating’ pain in his chest and lower abdomen.” He conjured the PaDD from under his arm and handed it to Alwyn. “I ran his vitals. Blood pressure, blood oxygen, and mean temperature are all within the established range for Tellarites. I did, however, notice lower variability in his heart rate. He’s displaying an elevated breath rate, so I suspect he’s suffering from dyspnea and panic.”

Alwyn took the PaDD handed to him and quickly checked the data to confirm Broderick’s assumption while Haadok answers the nurse.

“I tend to agree with your assessment,” Haadok remarked, “but panic is a sign, not a diagnosis. You mentioned that Mr Skahlem complained of pain in his lower abdomen. That may be associated with his mental state or an indication of a physiological condition. Probably both. Let’s confer with Mr Skahlem to learn more about his circumstances - perhaps we can uncover the root of his symptoms.” She glanced at Alwyn. “I trust Mr Skahlem will be more amenable to your conversation, Doctor. Would you like to take the lead?”

The young doctor nodded at Haadok: “Of course.” He tried to hide his nervosity by showing confidence and hiding any signs of hesitation. As he learned at the Academy, if the patient loses his trust, he won’t cooperate, and will eventually put himself in danger. Turning back to Broderick, he says with a smile: “Let’s go meet him, then.”

Broderick awaited Alwyn’s decision before jabbing a thumb at the examination suite. Turning, he led the pair to a biobed where a surly, glossy-eyed Tellarite sat hunched and hugging his abdomen. He seemed unusually quiet.

“Argh… about time you showed up!”Skahlem snorted, pulling a sour face that contradicted the uneasiness in his beady eyes. “D’you figure out what’s wrong with me?”

“Not yet, Mr Skahlem.” Haadok bowed her head in apology. “We need to discuss your condition before we can isolate a cause and treatment plan. Do you consent?”

“Whatever works,” Skalhem grunted.

“Understood,” Haadok made a mental note of his agreement and gestured to Yarwood, “this is Doctor Yarwood. Do you mind if he joins us today?”

“He’s already here, isn’t he?” Skahlem shrugged and offered a half-wave in greeting to Alwyn, “pleasure, doc. The name’s Rurru Skahlem, but I’m sure you already knew that. What do you want to know?”

— Haadok, CMO

“The pleasure is mine, Mr. Skahlem. I’ll need your permission to touch your abdomen in order to verify his shape and so you can describe the pain to me.” It might old schools to the patient, especially when they were in a sickbay, full of instruments and scanners, but sometimes the best methods are the simplest. Alwyn might find the problem without doing a scan, and they might find the cause faster.

Trying to relieve his patient’s visible stress, he added: “You don’t need to worry, I’ll go easy on you.”

“What makes you think I’m worried?” Skahlem grumbled, leaning into the bulkhead. He didn’t sense a threat in the kid, but the urge to quarrel was harder to subdue with nausea and cramps that felt like he’d been impaled with a 9 inch shard of duranium alloy. Today wasn’t his finest day. Skahlem wrinkled his nose and slowly retracted his hands. “Do what you must,” he huffed in an impatient tusk-jabbing gesture at his abdomen, “but make it quick. Please.”
